Chris Denorfia-OF-Reds Apr. 27 - 5:59 pm et

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Athletics have acquired outfielder Chris Denorfia from the Reds for two players to be named later.

Interesting. Denorfia is out for the season after Tommy John surgery earlier this month. The Reds seemed to have soured on him a bit even before the injury, but he still projects as a very good fourth outfielder or decent stopgap regular in the Brady Clark mold. If the A's picked him up cheap, it could turn out to be a very nice move for Billy Beane.

I've heard one of the PTBNL might be the Athletics trying to get Koufax's rights from the Israeli's. The Reds were desperate to get him to have another left-hander in their bullpen. :D

Denorfia, 26, will miss the rest of 2007 following Tommy John surgery, but he should come in real handy in 2008 as a fourth outfielder. The right-handed hitter had lines of .317/.391/.526 and .349/.409/.484 in the minors the last two years. He can play an adequate center field and he's above average in the corners. The Reds thought they didn't need him following Josh Hamilton's emergence, but as long as they're counting on Ken Griffey Jr., they're always going to need quality reserve outfielders.

assuming the PTBNLs are nothing, this is a great deal by beane

very weird for the reds to just give up on him right now - they must really be counting on hamilton continuing to play like he is

Marcus McBeth-R-Reds Apr. 28 - 2:01 pm et

Reds acquired RHP Marcus McBeth from the Athletics as one of the players to be named in the Chris Denorfia deal.

That's better than we thought they'd do for an injured outfielder. McBeth, probably Oakland's top relief prospect, had a 1.80 ERA and a 6/3 K/BB ratio in 10 innings for Triple-A Sacramento. He is 26 years old, but he was an outfielder before being turned into a reliever prior to the 2005 season. If he keeps making progress, he could have a future as a setup man. The Reds will likely give him a look later this season.

...and whaddya know, he's a relief pitcher.

He's actually their top minor league reliever; A's fans hate this trade. It only happened because Beane wanted Denorfia badly, the Reds have plenty of OF and the A's have plenty of pitchers. It was a win/ win.
