IowaCubs.com"]Gallardo shuts down I-Cubs

Yovani Gallardo pitched six strong innings and Chris Barnwell hit two home runs as Nashville cruised to a 7-1 win over visiting Iowa on Tuesday.

Gallardo (3-1) allowed one run on one hit and three walks. The 20-year-old was touched for a run in the third inning, as he walked Carlos Rojas before allowing Eric Patterson's RBI double. Gallardo's seven strikeouts increased his season total to 33, the most in the PCL and tied with Rome's Thomas Hanson for the most in all of Minor League Baseball.

Alec Zumwalt, Mitch Stetter and Steve Bray combined on three innings of scoreless relief for the Sounds (13-6).

Barnwell, who had not homered in 122 at-bats, dating to last season, hit a solo shot in the fourth inning and a two-run blast in the sixth. Ozzie Chavez went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

Carlos Marmol (2-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings. The 24-year-old walked four and struck out three. -- Benjamin Hill/MLB.com

SmokiesBaseball.com"]BAYBEARS TOP SMOKIES 6-1

Sevierville, TN – The Tennessee Smokies dropped their 2nd game in a row to the visiting Mobile BayBears by a 6-1 count Tuesday night at Smokies Park. The loss dropped the Smokies to 9-8 on the season, while the BayBears improved to 9-10.

The BayBears struck first and early off of Smokies starter Donnie Veal (0-4). After taking a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning, Mobile tacked on another five runs in the 3rd. With two outs, Josh Ford blooped a single into shallow right field just out of the reach of Smokies right-fielder Josh Kroger. Veal then loaded the bases with a walk, and another run scored on a chopper to third by Chris Rahl. The real damage was done by former Smokie Jarred Ball, who lined a hard shot into the right field corner for a bases clearing triple to make the score 6-0 Mobile.

The 6-0 score held until the bottom of the 7th when the Smokies finally got on the board. Jemel Spearman came in to pinch hit for Adalberto Mendez, who pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Spearman launched a home run over the left field fence to cut the lead to 6-1. That was all the damage the Smokies could inflect in the 7th however, as Sam Fuld was left stranded on base.

Josh Kroeger provided some power for the Smokies offense, going 4-4 on the night including a double. Sam Fuld and Joe Simokaitis also had multiple hit games with three hits apiece.

Samardzija Earns First Decision

Jeanine Jiannetti

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] An early start in Daytona brought Jeff Samardzija (0-1) his first decision of the season after four starts, a loss, as the Daytona Cubs (9-9) dropped game two to the Palm Beach Cardinals (10-7) on another Volusia Recycles Education Tuesday morning, 0-3.

The Cubs were shutout by the Cardinals having only four hits, coming from the bats of three Cubs players. Three singles came from Jesus Valdez (1-4) and Robinson Chirinos (2-3), and a double from Tyler Colvin (1-4).

Samardzija went five and one-third innings allowing the Cardinals all three of their runs on five hits. Only one of the three runs was earned leaving Samardzija with an ERA of 2.21. Samardzija also recorded a personal season-high in strikeouts with four.

Matt Matulia made an unbelievable play in the field, diving to stop a hard hit ground ball behind first base during the second inning. The Cubs defense halted any extra base hits from the Cardinals who had a total six hits on the day, all of which were singles.

I would be suprised if the moved Veal for Shark, I think the one thing everbody has to remember is that the hitters are more patient in AA. In High A you have a bunch of "free swingers" who will offer at anything close. I made a comment about this before that Sean had some problems he had to work out in AA cause the hitters make pitchers throw all their pitches for strikes. Pitcher may have a great slider but if he can't throw the pitch for a strike AA hitters let it go and then of course they just sit on your FB. Hopefully within his next few starts it will come around...

Another awful outing by Veal tonight. 3 IP, 5 hits, 6 runs, 4 Ks/4 BBs. Tennessee down 6-0 after 3.

Peoria has been in a rain delay.

Is it time to start worrying about him?

To top that off, I can't see Samardzija being promoted this soon.
