BALTIMORE - Center fielder Corey Patterson avoided arbitration with the Baltimore Orioles, agreeing Friday to a $4.3 million, one-year contract.

Patterson had a career-high 45 stolen bases last season and batted .276 - 61 points higher than he hit in 2005 with the Chicago Cubs. He had 16 homers, 53 RBIs and scored 75 runs.

The 27-year-old Patterson was asking for $4.6 million, and the Orioles offered $4 million. Patterson also can make $150,000 each for 500 and 520 plate appearances.

"I think both sides are pleased. Now I can fully concentrate on the 2007 season," Patterson said Friday from Atlanta in a phone call to The Associated Press.

$4.3 MM for Corey Patterson? Seems like a bit much, even in this market.

He was better than Juan Pierre in 2006.

Not that I'm saying a whole lot there, but still. Juan got a heck of a lot more than 4.3.
