To me, doesn't make a lot of sense from Philly's perspective (I'm of the belief the market will diminish...)

but...

Utley's 85 million dollar extension

Chase Utley might be the best second baseman in the National League. Now, the Phillies are paying him as such.

Utley and the Phillies agreed to a seven-year, $85 million extension Sunday, avoiding salary arbitration. The extension covers the final three arbitration seasons for Utley and his first four seasons of free agency. The deal is contingent on Utley passing a physical.

"We view Chase as not only a great second baseman but also one of the top 10-15 players in the game," Phillies assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "He's a hard-nosed, full-throttle player who exemplifies the spirit of Philadelphia. He is tailor-made for this city and we couldn't be happier to lock him up for years to come.

Yowsers.

I just read an article about a study that tracked the average % raise in relation to years the CBA is resigned. The year the CBA is resigned the increases are the largest, year after the second largest, and so on and so forth. Data shows the market to be very cyclical and Utley would have been due for FA at a perfect down time in the market.

Not to mention he'd be 31 on the FA market at that down time.

Sori made 23M in arbi, lets say Utley would have made 25. That means that they locked is first 4 FA years up at 15M a year. I guess they just went year to year with him and wanted to retain him when he was eligible to become a FA they probably would have to pay a lot more that 4/15 at least in terms of years. And those years would have been his decline years. I'm thinking its bad timing in terms of the market, but if you break it down like I did above (of course assuming Utley doesnt tank and the Phils would want him after he reaches FA), its actually probably a good deal.
