Colombia Winter League

I knew Jerry Blevins was playing down in Colombia until around Christmas, but when I went looking for team info, etc...I found several other Cubs down there too:

 

Jon Mueller, Jesus Valdez, Jerry Blevins, Jon Hunton, Alberto Garcia

 

Valerio Heredia, Jose Pina, Alfredo Francisco

 

This blog looks like a great place to get info, but you also need to be able to read a bit of Spanish. The league is the Copa Costena de Beisbol Profesional and it looks like things get underway next Friday.

The best part of Latin American winter leagues is testing your Spanish (although, not a lot of it does come up in conversational Spanish, shockingly).

Man, I live in Houston and no absolutely zero spanish. I tested my spanish while looking up some Cuban stats the other day and approximated their EqA for their league. Personally I was astonished to find that five guys had OBP over .500. I guess that the equivalent would be Pujols or someone playing in the Midwest League though.

Colombian Winter League

 

The Colombian Winter League championship series begins Tuesday in Cartagena, as the Caimanes will take on the Tigers. Three teams--the Caimanes, Tigers and Toros--all made the eight-game round-robin postseason tournament, and the Caimanes finished first with a 6-2 record. Among the players with minor league experience stateside who will be playing in the championship series for the Caimanes are lefthander Trevor Caughey (Orioles), righthander Jon Hunton (Cubs), lefthander Jerry Blevins (Cubs), outfielder Jason Fransz (Orioles) and catcher Morgan Clendenin (Orioles). Infielder Pete Maestrales (Orioles), Joseph Rogers and Byron Baston will be playing for the Tigers in the series.

In the Colombian Winter League, the Tigres catcher Yamid Haad homered to lead Cartagena past Barranquilla, 6-1, to take a 1-0 lead in the championship series.
