NY Times

The Mets had prepared themselves for the probability that Pedro Martínez would be unavailable to pitch in the first round of the playoffs. But this, they had not. They learned late Thursday that Martínez had torn a tendon in his left calf and will miss the entire postseason.

Big loss for the Mets.

that is an absolute killer loss for them. I still think they could win the pennant though because of the level of competition

wow. there goes the one solid team in the national league looks liek the real series will be the ALCS.

I think the Dodgers have the talent to compete. They have a few solid starters and a very talented lineup. There are just a lot of question marks in that talented lineup.

But that is a huge loss for the Mets. I really doubt they can win it all now.

The Mets fans I know are unhappy and gloomy. Now the hope is to get to the WS and not be playing the Yankees, because loosing to the Yankees would spoil the beautiful year they just had.

I still think the Mets are a good team, and the team I think would be most likely to beat them is the Astros throwing out Clemmons and Oswalt four times.

More bad news for Mets' fans. Pedro to have rotator cuff surgery and could be out until 2007 ASG.

mets.mlb.com[/url]"]The absence of Pedro Martinez from the Mets rotation will go beyond the postseason.

The club announced Saturday that Martinez has a tear in the rotator cuff of his right shoulder and will require surgery to repair it. The prognosis is that he could be pitching again in eight months, meaning he is lost to the Mets until after the All-Star break next season.

The club received word of the injury Thursday but withheld public announcement until Saturday to afford Martinez time to decide whether he wanted to undergo surgery or rehab his latest maladay.

Wasn't this pretty inevitable (the shoulder surgery)? Isn't that the reason Theo wouldn't go 4 years like Pedro wanted?

Red Sox fans should be thanking Theo Epstein right now. Just think how furious they would be if Pedro had been signed by the Red Sox to the same 4 year deal and then this happened. Oh man.
