Some choice parts:

Since 2004, this is the breakdown of what teams do when they draw zero through 10 walks per game:

BB W L PCT.

------------------

0 257 602 .299

1 670 1223 .354

2 1116 1429 .439

3 1180 1172 .502

4 1105 881 .556

5 851 562 .602

6 543 279 .661

7 336 162 .675

8 188 67 .737

9 98 24 .803

10 45 9 .833

Of course, a pure walk count exists in a vacuum. Drawing five walks is nice but not as nice when your pitching staff is coughing up seven. Let's look at the success rate of teams based on walk differentials. This next chart shows how teams fared when they out-walked their opponents by specific amounts:

Diff W L Pct.

-----------------

0 926 926 .500

1 947 694 .577

2 895 549 .620

3 642 324 .665

4 510 160 .761

5 301 93 .764

6 165 33 .833

7 96 9 .914

8 34 8 .810

9 24 3 .889

10+ 9 1 .900

Kind of lessens the blow of all those guys "clogging the bases", doesn't it?

The Angels have had the fewest five-plus walk games since 2004.

Shocking that the Cubs aren't the team with the fewest 5 plus walk games since 2004.

not when you look at the angels lineup!

Maybe we could get Bruce to slip him a mickey and then plant 50 copies of those stats over his briefcase and car.

Whaddya say Bruce?

shouldnt you be in Uptown or something????

Yes, a walk is like adding a single, except that it makes the pitcher throw more pitches. (It's not like a single in the fact that runners can't advance if a base is open)

That just adds more insult to injury in terms of approach, both on the mound and the plate. The Cubs have been out-walked in 78% of games and when they actually out walk someone, they are 15-11. 30-53 in all other games.

Speed is a nice asset if your team gets on base.

The sad part is that Hendry and Baker would just scoff at these numbers, if someone like Bruce ever presented them during a press conference.

It just goes to show how bad this team sucks. A 15-11 record is only a .577 winning percentage, which won't even help come close to the Wild Card.

God, this team just SUCKS.

wouldn't a .577 winning % mean 93 wins over the course of a season? That would be pretty close to winning it most years and likely would win it this year.

The Cubs would be leading the Central Division with a .577 win percentage. The Cards currently lead at .537.

The point isnt as well made however. Its such a small sample size that some oddities occur such as performing better with 3 walks than with 4 walks. The previous data leaves no doubt.

Pretty solid thinking there, biittner. Good point.

Winning 57% of the time would get it done most years. No coincidence that when the Cubs have drawn more walks than their opponent this season, they have won 57% of their games.

When you see those anomolies in a graph of the data, it's perfectly obvious that they are anololies and outliers.
