Peavy's pregame ritual

According to published reports, Jake Peavy has goes through a strange ritual before every start. In August, veteran Roger Clemens told Peavy it feels good to feel as uncomfortable as possible on the mound, so he rubs Icy Hot on his jock strap before every start. He tried it last August and tossed a shutout in August. "I figured, what do I have to lose?" Peavy said. "Well, I threw a complete-game shutout against Washington (3-0 win with 10 strikeouts). Now, it's become routine. I do it every start. And, Roger is right, it does make you feel uncomfortable."

 

Peavy figured the Rocket was kidding around, but it has become regular practice ever since. It is doubtful this will become a regular ritual among starters in the majors, but Fantasy owners are glad to see this strange practice working for their pitcher.
