  1. There may be some here talking about the "lead off" position as it applies to batting first...however, there are many others who understand that the higher you are in the line-up, the more at-bats you get. A player who is in a dreadful slump, should get less at-bats in a game. Thank you.
  2. Given a choice between the Cubs sailing through the regular season with 95 plus games and going to the world series OR struggling to get there...I'd rather go with the struggling. It's sure not fun going through it, but it's much more sweeter in the end. Trials and tribulations bring much more joy. Hopefully, this will end well.
  3. From Chicagosports.com: After winning their fourth straight, Piniella said he'd rest several regulars on Tuesday against San Francisco ace Tim Lincecum. I guess I just don't understand this mentality. Wouldn't you want to rest your regulars with a weaker pitcher, not one who has the potential to dominate? Of course it's early, and of course players need rest...but resting "several regulars." Hey, how 'bout we just rest all our big hitters whenever a tough pitcher takes the mound. Maybe someone can explain this to me.
  4. Are the Cardinals this good? Do you think they have the talent to carry them all season? discuss
  5. chicagosports.com has a great presentation on both the Cubs and White Sox greatest players by number. #31 was a tie...Maddux and Jenkins. I'd probably give the edge to Maddux. There are some interesting picks and some good history. Ken
  6. I thought this was great:
  7. Last night, Soriano hit his 50th career lead-off homer. Does anyone know if that was leading off a game, or just leading off (whether game or inning)? Ken
  8. Yeah, the extra rest the end of September last year really did Soriano and Ramirez a lot of good in the playoffs.
  9. per ESPN: Mitre told ESPN.com that while he takes "full responsibility" for his actions, he failed a drug test because a trace amount of androstenedione appeared without his knowledge in a nutritional supplement that he bought at GNC. "Although being suspended for 50 games is tough to accept, I think that it is important to understand that I am in full support of drug testing in baseball," Mitre said in a statement released through his agent, Paul Cobbe. "I did take the supplement in question and accept full responsibility for taking it. What has been difficult for me to understand is that I legally purchased this supplement at GNC and had no intention nor desire to cheat or to circumvent the system in any way. "As confirmed through the drug testing and grievance processes, it contained a 'contaminant' amount of an illegal, performance-enhancing drug. This was not listed as an ingredient on the packaging, should not have been in the supplement and certainly should not have been available for legal purchase at a store."
  10. Who cares if he's right? He shouldn't be saying it. Especially after consecutive bad postseasons. I think Soriano should be saying one thing, "we sucked." Saying anything else given his pathetic performance the last 2 postseasons can be construed as finger-pointing.
  11. "Yeah, it's tough," he (Soriano) said. "We tried, but it just didn't happen. We played all year like a very good team and we expected a little bit more, but it didn't happen." While he didn't pass the buck, Soriano said he believes the Cubs were built for a marathon, not a sprint. "We're a very good team for [162] games, but we don't do nothing after that," he said. "That's the difference. We're not put together for [a short series]."
  12. I absolutely can. This is exactly what I feared....Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez coming out flat again. I don't see us winning this series unless two of those guys getting on fire. What a shame to waste such a great regular season!
  13. It's only one loss. That being said, this team knows that tonight's game is a must win. For some teams, that pushes them to excel. I hope I'm wrong, but I've got a bad feeling about this Cubs team coming through when the pressure is on. First off, I have little hope that Soriano will do anything in the playoffs. Secondly, if Lee and Rammy start pressing tonight, I think we may see a repeat of last year's playoffs -- lack of plate discipline and everyone swinging at cr ap. When the Cubs lost game 6 of the 2003 NLCS, I knew in my heart we would not win game 7. If we lose tonight, I do not see our "big 3" coming through under pressure in order to string out 3 straight in a high pressure situation. That being said, let's go out and win tonight!!!
  14. I couldn't disagree with this more. We have a bigger obligation to win the World Series. Set your teams up for the postseason, and then worry about fielding the best team after that. Losing teams don't worry about this stuff when they're playing all the kids from their farm system at the end of the year...why should a contending team worry about it? I'm not saying we should run out scrubs every day...but I don't think we should put the obligation to be competitive at the end of the season over the obligation to be competitive in the postseason. Maybe that's not what he's saying...but it's just one of those baseball idioms that drives me nuts. Banedon, I think all Lou is doing is letting the commissioner and the other playoff teams know that he will not lay down against teams who are still contending, which really is every teams responsibility. I think he fully understands the importance of resting players and getting to the World Series. I see his statement as nothing more than a politically correct statement meant to cover his butt.
  15. thanks!
  16. I tried looking for it the other day, couldn't find it. Can someone help? thanks. Ken
  17. Bravo! =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>
  18. I don't want 2 of our lower half hitters hitting 1-2. I'm fine with how the lineup is now. It's hard to screw up a lineup as consistent as we have. What does 'lower half hitters' mean? As in not one of the best 4 hitters on our team. Riot should hit either 1 or 2. He is a single machine. Why does being a singles machine mean he should hit 1 or 2? I think he's best served to hit 8, where he can be bunted into scoring position by our bad hitting pitchers, or possibly steal a base for our pitchers that can hit when there are 2 outs. Again, the lineup doesn't matter a lot considering how good each of our hitters are, but I see no reason to give the most ABs per game to Theriot, DeRosa, or Kosuke. Out of all of our starters, Theriot has the highest OBP. Why wouldn't you want him to get more AB's?
  19. Let's hope that this is a new trend....an expectation to make the playoffs on a regular basis.
  20. He should definitely show up for 3 reasons: 1) It's easy money 2) This could be the beginning of people moving on with their lives instead of using Bartman as a scapegoat. 3) Some of the proceeds of the convention will go towards charity if he shows up. Ken
