  1. I used to bring cub scouts to games all the time and you're right, most of the time they were running around and mostly focused on food. I've talked to many scouts and they are all different on what they look for, well, more of how they breakdown certain aspects of a players game. Of course they look for things at different levels, HS, college, Minors, and Majors but they know their stuff. Could they learn and maybe do something different to improve how they evaluate, probably. But, listening to them talk and what they see was and is a very good experience for me as I've learned a lot from these men* (*Disclaimer, I have yet to met a female scout so get out there ladies and show your stuff!). you know what i meant. sometimes they get lost in looking at players physical appearance and athleticism they fail to notice that for whatever the reason the guy cant hit. Like I wrote, they look at certain aspects such as athleticism. I know a lot of HS coaches that pick their teams using the same approach believing they can mold the player since they have athletic ability into a player they think will make an impact. The "You can't teach speed" type of thought is quite prevalent. You can only make a slow runner so fast but you never really know what you could make of an athletic kid. Potential has had many scouts, coaches and GM's fired.
  2. im impressed. Not taking anything away from Devine (he's an incredible athlete), but it helps that Maryland really isn't anything special. It'll look a lot better when he starts tearing up good football teams. It's just too bad for the Mountaineers the White, Slaton, Devine, Reynaud foursome won't be together longer than this year (or possibly next). Maryland was 2-0 and went 9-3 last year and beat Purdue 24-7 in a bowl game. Special, maybe not but they are a very good team and the game was in Maryland. The specific plays and moves I came away impressed with could have been pulled on USC or LSU's defense to make them look silly. Like I said in my post, I'm not taking anything away from the athleticism of any of those players. They're terrific and were very impressive last night. The point I was making, though, was that they'll get more credit for it when (not if) they do it against the LSU's and USC's of the world. How about when those guys as freshmen put 38 on the SEC champ Georgia, or doesn't that count because the Bulldogs had a down year winning the SEC Championship?
  3. First, the Cubs have only made it to the postseason 11 in the last 99 years. According to my calculations, that's once every 9 years. One could argue that they've made it 1/5 years recently; then I would argue small sample size. I understand the concept, but what makes you think if we lose this year it will be any different than the other 98 years? AND, what will make this offseason different than last year when they addressed this problem and spent millions of dollars? I may be alone in this but I think Lou will help Hendry see what is needed to win and hopefully steer Hendry in the right direction. Lou has repeatedly said he wants hitters that take pitches and hopefully he'll show Hendry the light. If the Cubs win and go to the playoffs, it might even prove Lou's point even more when good pitchers expose that weakness on the big stage. Lou certainly didn't have much influence on the Soriano signing then. Seriously, this guy hacks at everything. Yeah, he goes through streaks where he hits a ton of homers, but he also goes through streaks where he looks like an absolute fool at the plate. Maybe, because Lou had not yet mananged the team, he didn't feel he had earned Hendry's respect to dissuade him from signing Soriano. Unfortunately, we are stuck with an 8 year, gazillion dollar contract for a guy who swings at everything at the plate. Not wise, and certainly contadicts Lou's OBP philosophy -- IF that truly is his philosophy. Ken Soriano was the best available free agent and imo he was going to be signed by Hendry even if the king of patience was the manager.
  4. oo boo hoo thommy-boy So who's his favorite team, the Yankees? Favorite little Rascal, Spanky?

  6. Oh crap career threatening surgery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That has been their theme, eh? I'm glad Lee had the day off and I was hoping Lou was going to do it anyway, He looks like he needs a day off to recharge. Good thing it did not come back to bite us in the posterior. Hope he's okay for tonight. Wards a nice back up though. Hope we bring him back next season on another one yr deal with a mutual option for a second. It's not like throwing some scrub over at first like a Lenny Harris/Macias over there. I think Ward has a quality bat from the bench. Just think if Lou did the day before, Lee wouldn't have hit the foul ball off his knee. Hindsight, of course it is but I hope Lou has rested these guys enough to have them ready for the last 2 weeks, which I did say their bats would take off right about now thanks to the time off Lou has given them! Lou's a big picture guy imo and I like what I've seen so far. Perfect, no manager is but overall I like what I have scene. I hope they do too but I wonder if he's been disappointed with his lack of playing time. 1) I doubt Ward is that upset with his playing time. He was signed to be a bat off the bench with very few starts, and he knew what he was getting into. 2) It doesn't matter anyway. The Cubs have a 1.2 million club option on him next year, so Ward will be a Cub in 2008. It's just the Cubs option and not the players? Good. If I were hitting as well as he is I'd want to go to the AL and be a DH.
  7. I'd prefer that you express your points without saying something bad/personal to the poster you are responding too. Trying to get the person upset to expose their weakness is a decent strategy but please try to do so without the insults. Hold them accountable that's fine but just try to play by the rules of the board and attack the post by saying why you disagree instead of saying that was dumb or a comment like that. You're an intelligent person, can't you do that simple thing?

  11. You one bold man with that prediction! I'd like to see Culpepper play and I hope he does well.

  13. Who's doctor Woo? http://www.sagehealthcare.com/people/shin.shtml So that's who Steely Dan were signing about! Steely Dan was making music for the deaf? And they loved it!
  14. I think it's time to rid that city of the Marlins.
  15. Why? Isn't it in Houston? I just assumed that getaway day would be a day game, but instead they will be of no help in making the next 45 minutes go by. :resuming clock-watching: I didn't realize that. Maybe because the Cubs are going to St. Louis instead of someplace farther?

  17. Hill reminds me of Charlie Brown the way he drops his back shoulder and raises his front.
  18. Who's doctor Woo?
  19. I'll bet he was signaling the Cub hitters on what type of pitch was coming.
  20. Musical GM's here we go! We might be able to have a game/bet on which of the proven vets doesn't get a chair.
  21. He wouldn't be held back money wise in Houston, but he certainly wouldn't have total control, they should be out of the running as well. I'm not sure of the Astro infrastructure so if that is the case, it may not be the place for him.
  22. I would assume that if leaving Minny because his hands were tied money wise, he certainly wouldn't go to the Pirates.
  23. You are mojo joe joe. Mojo joe joe are you.
  24. We have to win every one of our remaining games to go 91-71. SO yeah, I don'tthink we're gonna make it. That was my prediction before the year started and I've heard that the Cubs hired a video guy from the New England area so it still has a good chance of coming true!
