  1. Who is the backup 3rd baseman? I would have guessed Macias... but I guess we need his bat off the bench...
  2. If that's the case he should say that's the case. In fact, if that were the case I would bet he WOULD say it, becuase then NO ONE would second guess him. He can't handle being second guessed. That much is obvious. He has hairbrained reasons for doing things... Honestly, I would not at all be surprised if somone higher up said "Hey, Dusty, don't you think we should play the backup 2nd baseman at 2nd base?" And Dusty replied "Sure, *mutter* *mutter* oh, buy the way, Aramis is sitting today and I'm going to put Neifi at third."
  3. No, you don't have to sit Aramis... and you especially don't have to sit him one week into the season. This is absurd, yet again. I'm actually leaning towards the "I'll play Neifi if I want to mentality." I've never understood Dusty, and I never will.
  4. Dusty will be our manager until some SERIOUS critisism starts coming in from the press, the nationwide press... Frankly, starting Perez should warrant that critisism... but it probably won't happen...
  5. Ok, I thought that was a joke... Perez at 2nd... Yeah, ok... I guess with Dempster going we don't need much run support
  6. When Macias and Perez are ahead of Hairston and especially Dubois on the bench... Our bench is a SERIOUS weakness. It's already a weakness, but if Dubois and Hairston were the first two off of it, it would at least not be a serious one...
  7. Hendry has got to do something. He has got to get rid of Macias and Perez... I don't care who it means putting there, but they are going to get the PH ABs first EVERY SINGLE TIME until they are gone. The sickening thing is, the whole team has the "it's early, wait until warm weather" excuse for at least a month... stupid stupid stupid... IF we waste this year, it's just one less year where Wood/Prior/Z could have taken us all the way...
  8. Give one example. Nothing like replying 4 pages later. Sorry for my slowness... I can think of 2 teams off the top of my head, 1985 & 1999. Also 2001 has a point as well. All 3 teams finished behind the last 2 years. Don't misunderstand me, I believe that these past 2 years and this year's team is incredibly talented and probably would beat those other teams, but you can't discount the fact that Dusty has made these teams successful. Just because you are talented doesn't mean that you will win just by showing up or in spite of yourself. Look at the late 60's team. They were loaded but fell flat. I guess it takes more for me to lose faith in a leader then a bad PH decision. what about 100 of them? (see past 2 years)
  9. How about a thread which is not used for discussion (a parallel thread could rant and rave about things) that had entries that listed Dusty's critical decisions, including the situation leading to them. This could lead to all kinds of different stats as the season moves forward. It would also show the good with the bad. For instance, in game 1, I think the only decision that would get listed would be Zambrano's exit after 4 2/3. The DBacks could have gotten back in it if something wasn't done, and I'm not sure anyone disagrees with Dusty's decision. After the game was well in hand, the other moves were simply to get guys ABs. Game 2 would be a longer list. Since the game was so close, all the decisions would be listed, pitching changes, pintch hitters/runners, and defensive subs. It would take a lot of work, but hey, what else are we going to do. This would also prevent people from being able to exaggerate positions, like... "Macias is always first of the bench!" "No, look, only 80% of the time is he first."
  10. You echo my sentiment in that the basis of a good move or bad move is usually dictated by the outcome. However, you mention the concept of "enough merit to support" certain decisions. In this case, I do not see the merit to support the decision. Perhaps a thread that simply lists his moves from each game as a record. We could then look at trends objectively, and analyze him over the season. It doesn't have to be one long argument...
  11. I remember, and I remember thinking it was amazing. The problem with that is, that team should have scored a LOT more. That was the team where they has an insane winning record scoring 4 runs or more, but still only won 88 games. When you score less, but have good pitching, you win a lot of 1 run games. LAST year, we didn't have the pitching, so we lost a LOT more of the 1 run games. I'm not saying all 1-run games are the manager's responsability to win, I'm saying that a managers decisions will generally only be able to effect 1 or 2 runs, so their impact is greater in one run games than in others. Don't forget also, Dusty rode his starting pitchers HARD in 2003, which means he made fewer pitching decisions, and thus fewer decisions in general... However, need I remind you of Troy O'Leary, Tom Goodwin, and Lenny Harris... how many pinch hitting appearances did they get???
  12. It will happen as long as they are on the team, Dusty has proved that. We're just going to have ot face the fact that we're going to lose a higher percentage of close games than we should.
  13. It's easy to understand Dusty (coming from someone who watched a LOT of giants games with him at the helm). If you have some talent, and take managerial decisions away from Dusty (go out to an early lead), he's AWESOME. Keeps players in the game, gets everyone playing time, generally makes the team better, and they win more games. If your talent slips up, and the game is close, and the game relies on Dusty making good moves... he is HORRIBLE. He will make the wrong move 95% of the time. He just doesn't know what he's doing. He plays his favorites, and ignores common sense. If there are a lot of 1-run games, he will lose a lot of them. Those are the facts, and they are indisputable. He makes a good team better, but severely hurts an average team. Fortunately, I think we have a good team, and in the end he will make it better, we're just going to have to look past games like last night.
