  1. You aren't. You evidentally know very little about Cuban and what he does. Some of my colleagues attended an advanced Excel workshop sponsored by Microsoft in Dallas yesterday. The star of the show was a guy from the Mavericks organization talking about how he uses Excel to statistically analyze everything about the game, and that the Mavericks organization is obsessed with the use of statistical analysis. We wouldn't want that kind of influence in the world of Cubdom. I think Cuban's public persona is a deliberate marketing ploy - not to mention the strategic advantage if your competition thinks you're an idiot. This is really cool, by the way. I heard that they keep a pretty extensive database of information on each team and use it to game plan. Well, think about it in terms of bang for the buck - turn loose a 50-100K /yr stat geek with a process that produces the quantity of stats that professional sports generate. Spend the off-season creating metrics and testing them on historical databases. Get 2 or 3 (hell, hire me to manage it) and you still don't match the cost of the last guy on the bench, but you could easily impact the outcome of 5-10 games a year. Of course it also helps when the coach, GM and owner are all really smart and on board with your approach.

  3. Bums. Don't they realize you can't rely on the long ball? Speed and defense win games, dude. Also, for what it's worth, Daytona is the second best slugging team in the FSL. Individually, Jake Fox and Matt Craig are numbers 2 & 3 (as of yesterday - it will probably be reversed after tonight). Edit: Daytona is also #2 in OBP and OPS.
  4. :P wanna feel worse about yourself? become an Architect :bom: Only if you promise to learn how to turn off caps lock.
  5. Nicely played. I'm hoping I'm not the only one who got the reference. You have to go pretty obscure to go over the heads of this crowd.
  6. For the second night in a row Matt Craig has gone 3-3 plus a walk. His last 2 PA's on Saturday were single/walk, so by my calculations that's reaching base in 10 consecutive PA's. That's a pretty good streak.
  7. Yeah I am as depressed as anyone by this thread, but I can't see Koranka keeping this up. He didn't - tonight (admittedly against the Yankees) he was 4.2 IP, 8H, 5ER, ERA up to 4.22
  8. Did you intentionally leave JP and his sub-.270 OBP out of the list of "killers"? the expectations around him weren't too high, so didn't feel like lumping w/ with the manager, 2 starters and aram. I disagree. The expectations of Pierre were failry high considering we needed him to get on base. And he was the premier offensive acquisition of the offseason, the guy Hendry and Baker centered their entire plan around. It's one thing for those who looked at his history to have low expectations, but when the GM trades 3 good prospects for a one year rental, the organization had to have extremely high expectations.
  9. From the Florida State League Notebook for the week of May 8
  10. I'm having fun trying to think of definitions for assinate.
  11. I would so take that bet, but that doesn't mean we're good.
  12. Not surprisingly, Jacob Fox is leading the FSL in SLG and OPS (at 645 and 1.052). Somewhat surprisingly, given his abysmal start (avg 121 as of April 15), Matt Craig is now 7th in SLG and OPS, at 543 and 919, while raising his average 250 points to 371. It will be interesting to see how the catching experiment works whenever he gets a chance.
  13. For the record, on Tuesday night all four of those players signed an autograph for me. :) So have you posted pictures yet and I just missed them, or did you spend all your time taking care of Addison and getting autographs?

  15. Have to listen to the Giants announcers on INHD, but seeing that big hook in HD was just absolutely unbrlievable.
  16. Perhaps but Juan almost lost it out of the glove and had that happened, it likely would have been over the wall for a Canseco-esque bounce of HR fortune. That would almost have been better. Bonds ties Babe on a cheapy. Yeah, that's what I was just thinking. It would have been absolutely fitting for him to hit the ball most of the way, and then get a little help... just like the rest of his career. Much unlike #713 - that was a monter shot.
  17. That HR was pitch 101. ha ha But with a 6 run lead SD can afford to stretch him out a little.
  18. I can't eat chicken wings this late - hand me another beer.
  19. The good news is that Chris (Cy) Young is usually only good for around 100 pitches and he's at 85 through 5.
  20. Tall. Hard to say for sure...the Cubs make anyone look good. Hairston got a ton of pitches right down the middle. I know he's tall - watched him play baseball and basketball in high school - you should have seen him when he was 8.
  21. How is my boy Chris Young looking from those of you who can see it?
  22. Matt Craig had 2 HR's for Daytona - as I read the box score that should have been one from each side of the plate for the switch hitter, one off the RH Trahern, and the other off LH Peralta. :D
