    he will. just not A-rod power. I'm not making myself clear apparently. I like Castro, I like his upside, I'm a fan, and I think he will improve. I just don't think power will be his best weapon.

    I'm not sure anyone is saying otherwise. What we are saying is that it's incredibly exciting that he could potentially supplement his great contact skills and (flashes of) patience with average to above-average power. This really stems from listening to Len and Bob talk about him developing power. I just don't see it happening. I'd gladly be wrong though. Sorry folks, just a pet-peeve of mine. I'll shut up now.

    For the record... I think Starlin is going to have a great major league career. He has a ton of talent, and maturity will really bring that into focus. I think his defense will improve from toolsy to great. I think he will hit. a lot. I just don't see a particular reason to think that power will be a standout part of his game.

    Right now, it's easier to project some more power to Beckham, and he walks a bit more often as well. But Castro is still physically maturing and nobody really knows where his power is going to end up. And putting up even a passable walk rate as a 20 year old in major league action gives a degree of hope in that regard too. All this while playing the more demanding defensive position (and having the tools to be a plus defender there). Beckham's more polished. Castro's got the upside. They should both have some really nice careers though. More of the Castro developing power mantra?! I'm probably just blowing up because Len and Bob wouldn't stop talking about the power "Star" will develop as he matures. I can tell you where his power will be. Average starter. Maybe a tick above average for position. Again I know you weren't saying he'd develop ridiculous power or comparing him to Griffey/A-Rod. But the talk of his developing power just rubs me wrong.

    Of course not. I'd say he's the best of three bad options. Barney's D really turned my head. He and Castro turned some DP's that it looked like they had the same brain. But his bat leaves much to be desired. There's a reason Baker was released. DeWitt scares me on defense and his bat has been hardly defensible. But the upside is hard to turn away from. So, yeah, I agree.

    they're legumes I'll give you my telescope for them... Kudos for the Office reference. The best part of that episode was Jim wheeling out the larger/grown plants after Dwight left. I fear the show will change with Carrell (sp?) leaving but it still makes me laugh. It was only slightly funny until he wheeled the large plants out. then...hilarious. Anyone else read "One Red Paperclip"? That's the book Dwight's plan was based on.

    Most of us did. There was a lot of eye-rolling going on when anyone mentioned concerns about make-up and team chemistry. Bradley was an on base machine who made a lot of sense to a community that disregards intangibles.

    I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but Silva was offered the opportunity to go to Iowa. Apparently he declined.

    Giants had Lincecum and maybe Cain and they won it last year. Nobody really on the cusp. Who did the Padres have last year? Heath Bell, and nobody on the cusp. I don't think it's a requirement to have multiple guys in the top 100. Yeah, that's what I was leaning towards. Having 3 top 100 guys is pretty damn good, and having more than that is pretty damn great. Wouldn't three have to be average? or rather 3.3? Take out the outliers (yankees with 9 and astros with 0) and you still have an average of 3.25.

    Well, I don't think anyone thinks Castro is going to be a 30+ HR guy like those two. As to your question, hitting 31 doubles in 500 PA's in the big leagues at age 20, along with his swing and body type are pretty good indicators that he's going to hit more HR as he develops. I think you and I are on the same page, but I seem to get the impression (maybe falsely) that people DO think he's going to consistently hit 30 hrs a year.

    What is it that has everyone convinced that power will be a bigger part of Castro's game? Just his build and the fact that he hasn't matured yet? People keep wanting to compare him to Griffey and A-rod, but those guys were hitting 15-20 hrs a year in the minors at the same age Starlin was hitting 3.

    Then you're making the contract more expensive ...which makes it more appealing to Pujols. I would do something like this: 10 years, 280M 30 30 30 30 30 27 24 21 18 15 Plus deferred payments of $5m/yr for 5 additional years to bring it up to the $280M. The frontloading and the deferments somewhat cancel each other. The NPV of the deal is $238.1M @ 3%, versus $238.9 for 10 equal annual payments of $28M each. If he'd agree to make the last year or two mutual options, all the better. Do we still operate under the assumption that payrolls will continue to rise? Do we also still operate under the assumption that a dollar today has more value than a dollar in 10 years? If so, you don't have to frontload to frontload.
