The NHLPA will vote on the escalator clause sometime later today. If they vote yes, the salary cap goes up by about $2 million for next season, but the escrow the NHL takes out of their paychecks (in order to guard against revenue shortfalls) will also get 5% larger. That means anyone who isn't signing a new contract this offseason effectively gets a 5% paycut. If they vote no, then the salary cap stays the same or goes down by a few hundred thousand. The vote has been close the last few times, and this time it is expected to be very close, although a "yes" vote is still the favorite. If they vote no, though, the Blackhawks cap problems go from "troubling" to "completely screwed for next season." You'd almost be looking at a lineup of Hossa, Toews, Kane, Keith, Campbell, Seabrook and 15 league minimum guys.
