  1. Apparently he's 17, already touches 96, and is crazy projectable.
  2. The clock is just for show. They want this to look and feel like the NFL draft.
  3. David Eckstein is a championship player. Ryan Theriot. Mark Grace.
  4. Any thoughts on Almora's bat speed? Maybe I've watched too much Baez video, but it seemed kind of unimpressive.
  5. McDaniel seems to have some irrational love for Almora, I love the pick, but wow. I'd like to know what specific tool(s) he and others are most enthralled with other than just his makeup and other intangibles. All his tools grade out above average (including his plate discipline =P~ , which isn't really a "tool" per se..)except his speed... and the speed doesn't seem to be a big deal as he grades out as very good defensive CF and a good basestealer anyway. Add the makeup and work ethic and all that, and you have the love. I think the quote I saw about Almora's range was that it was fantastic despite having average speed. Said he has great instincts and gets a better jump than almost anyone. Saw another that said he was nearly, or was, ML ready defensively, sorry can give names (I think it was a BA tweet). Far too many tweets yesterday while watching my younger son pitch one game then my older catch a second game. Going off of memory, so I'm paraphrasing, and (unfortunately) probably combining different tweets into one statement. There was a BA article that quoted a scout as saying he had 80 range in CF with just 40 speed. That's got to be pre-draft hype, because I just can't imagine how that works.
  6. Almost entirely caught up on the PSD Cubs draft thread. Marlin Bystro showed up and called Johnson like five minutes before it happened.
  7. My guess is Almora slot, Johnson very close to slot (maybe a tiny bit under), Blackburn gets the 400k 5% overage.
  8. Rizzo Almora Baez (just not quite as in love with him as others. Highest upside of any of the four.) Jackson (still very, very concerned about the K rate)
  9. Punted meaning drafted with no intention of signing them? Blackburn is going to be a tough sign, so maybe. I wouldn't mind getting pick #57 next year. Really wish we would have gotten Weickel. Yeah, maybe they figure punt one of the supplemental picks by taking a guy who is known to be a tough sign and requite over slot to keep so it doesn't seem like an obvious punt and go over slot on guys rounds 2-4 if they really like some guys that they think will be around. If you don't sign the guy, you lose his slot money. The way to punt on a pick is take a guy who is a super easy, cheap sign.
  10. you're really unlikely to draft a guy widely considered to have TOR upside when you're not in the first round. sometimes guys drafted later turn into TOR pitchers, but that's as much luck as it is anything else. I totally agree and I didn't mean it as a knock on the picks both seem like they could at least be bullpen/back rotation filler at least one day. I've already got "reliever" in mind for Johnson. And not in a bad way. It's just that "touching 94" usually means "working 90-91" by the time they hit the majors as a starter. Putting him in the bullpen can keep that FB as a plus pitch and not just an average one. Not that he shouldn't get every chance to stick as a starter first, of course.
  11. They mentioned Blackburn is a pretty strong college commit, so he may take some money to get away.
  12. By the third sentence, the MLB draft guys mention he had a no-hitter in HS and a 3.4 GPA. That's damnation with faint praise.
  13. I don't think there's going to be any higher offers. I expect the Cubs to offer some crazybuckets amount of money that blows every other team out of the water, same as with Concepcion.
  14. http://www.mymlbdraft.com/2012/mlb-draft-profiles/Pierce-Johnson I'm no expert on this, but that delivery looks ugly. Like after he releases the ball, he short-arms the follow through in some weird way.
  15. That was my worry too. Forearm strains are preludes to elbow problems.
  16. I don't know who Kiley McDaniel is, but he is now the most credible draft pundit in the world in my mind.
  17. He's in parentheses. What more do you want? But I totally believe we have a deal in place. Based on what? Many teams could be under the impression they have a deal with him, illegal, but possible. Hope the Cubs get him, but any talk of a secret deal already being done is all hypothetical speculation for now. Media reports, rumors from semi-reliable message board sources, and the Cubs' pattern of behavior in the last year.
  18. He's in parentheses. What more do you want? But I totally believe we have a deal in place.
  19. Slot 'em: Rizzo (Soler) Almora Baez Jackson In that order, for me.
  20. It's not his first brain cramp. It really won't hurt anything to bench him for a game in a meaningless season to make sure he doesn't forget how many outs there are in the future.
