  1. The average team had 22.8 fWAR going into today, so I guess that would mean Fangraphs is setting replacement-level at 58 wins.
  2. Was Joe Mather's presence on the roster his idea or Hoyer's? That's the only possible markdown I can think of.
  3. They had a guy on the 15-day DL that they moved to the 60-day DL.
  4. Wait until the day in the offseason when it becomes irrevocably clear that they plan on doing the same thing for next season?
  5. With a trio of losses tonight, the brain trust teams of SD, Boston and Chicago are a combined 75 games under .500.
  6. Someone was clearly influenced by the paperbecause commercials.
  7. As soon as I saw that abuck had posted, I thought "Post taking a shot at me, shot at someone else, or relevant baseball post? I'll go with 70/20/10." I hadn't even considered a single shot at me spread out over two posts. Well played.
  8. I hope they do it starting from deep in the bullpen, because they've sucked enough at this point to not be counted on.
  9. As soon as the season is over, I'm going to do a massive post outlining, among other things, the 2012 Cubs' WAR by position and outlining why we were so bad. It'll be a nice jumping-off point for what to do in 2013. http://cdn.uproxx.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/steve-carell-no.gif I'll dedicate it to you.

  11. No one is going to tolerate this thing going beyond next year. And I don't think they'll have to. Are they even going to be that bad next year? I'm pretty sure we'll sign 2 of those 2nd tier starters... which will make for a pretty nice rotation after Shark and Garza. And I think we'll give BJ Upton a serious look, given the fact that he's relatively young and in his prime, should provide more value than he'll cost, and plays one of our 2 complete black hole positions. It's up to the front office if we're this bad again. I mean, it's hard to be *this* bad, but we could be close to as bad. All they have to do is give Brett Jackson CF and ignore the bullpen again. Then dump what's left of the rotation at the trade deadline.
  12. I don't know if preferring the team to be winning but willing to accept a lot of losing if someone promises you vague future gains as a result qualifies as a high-pressure environment.
  13. No one wants the team to be terrible. No one is enjoying this, it's brutal. But if you're going to suffer, you might as well get something out of it. Ventured outside of NSBB lately? You'll find in most places Cubs fans hang out, there is much cheering for the team finally being willing to be awful, because good players cost money and that's what Hendry would have done, or something.
  14. The 2004 atmosphere faded by last year at least. The current state of Cub fandom *wants* the team to be terrible.
  15. Clevenger/Castillo and Sappelt/Mather are the ones that particularly irk me, and of course Travis Wood at the time.
  16. My big thought going into the season was that they had acquired enough depth that they couldn't be too terrible even if they weren't good. Then they managed to somehow employ 30 separate below-replacement players this season. I underestimated how awful the bullpen could be, I didn't realize they'd be keeping some of their best players at AAA for service-time issues, I didn't plan on a massive deadline dump, and I didn't see the total collapse of CF coming.
  17. Looking at what was left to him makes it worse for him, not better. He inherited Dempster, Garza, Castro, Barney, Samardzija, Soriano, pretty much all the best players on the team. His best additions were Wood, DeJesus and half a season of Rizzo, none of which I believe eclipsed 2.0 WAR this season. Meanwhile, he personally put together the sucking void that was our below-replacement third bases situation and our below-replacement bullpen. I can't blame him for CF, though, that one was legacy.
  18. No one will argue that the 2012 Cubs were terrible, but it is short-sighted to judge one season of a new administration without looking at the bigger picture. Epstein and Hoyer assembled the 2012 roster, but they did so based on a system left to them in disarray. To make a statement implying that Epstein and/or Hoyer are primarily responsible for this season is ignoring the larger picture. Okay, so when I post "I am judging Epstein and Hoyer's regime on the 2012 W-L record," your responses will make sense. Would you like me to edit my post to reflect what you thought you were replying to? I could be a nice guy like that.
  19. You can't be serious. Surely the part about it being one of the worst Cubs teams can't be argued, but to blame Jed Hoyer for that is nonsense. Who am I supposed to blame? Virtually all of the bad players were put on the roster by him. I mean, I could have blamed Theo Epstein, but I feel bad that Jed never gets any recognition for being the GM. You are looking at one season at face value without any regard for the long term plan. If the goal was to put a team on the field that could possibly reach .500, then Epstein and Hoyer failed. If the goal was to start building a championship team, then it is way too early to make any judgements. I don't think anyone is happy with how this season turned out, but to assign blame to the new administration at this point is just silly. I didn't say any of that. I simply said that Jed Hoyer put together the 2012 Cubs and that they are the worst Cubs team in most of our lifetimes. You are reading a lot of other arguments into my post. Sure, they are arguments I'd be inclined to make, but they aren't arguments I was making in that post.

  21. Congratulations to Jed Hoyer for putting together the worst Cubs team of most of our lifetimes.
  22. If I'm Texas, no way I pay that much for Garza this offseason.
  23. The game counts toward the regular season statistics, so yes. I still remember hoping maybe, just maybe, Sosa could hit four in the tiebreaker with the Giants and tie McGwire.
  24. Might be able to win out and avoid 100 losses. Winning today would mean this team's place as the third-worst in franchise history is locked in, can't move up or down the list.
  25. I have a hard time deciding how much I think Matt Garza is worth in a trade right now. Matt Garza is entering his age-29 season, is one year removed from a 2.95 FIP and 4.9 fWAR season, will be in his final arbitration year and should net his new team a compensation pick. Matt Garza is also a sore-armed pitcher who had FIPs of around 4.15 with extreme consistency every other season of his career, including last season. Outside of 2011, he's a 3-win pitcher, and he'll be getting paid like a 2-win pitcher, so the excess value would be about 1 win and a draft pick. I mean, we might as well gamble at this point that he has an awesome 2012 first half and we get something awesome at the deadline, but if we wanted to trade him this offseason, we aren't going to get much. If we're still setting framing this in terms of what we would have gotten last spring, then I have a feeling we're going to be very disappointed. I mean, Fowler and Matzek are terrible, of course, so I want no part of that.
