  1. How sure are you that our current approach avoided that fate?
  2. I'm not going to go through three years of alternative offseasons. That'd be lunacy. I know I put out a few in the past (not for this past offseason, but the ones before). It involves a tremendous amount of hindsight, though. For example, Puig. As you've noted, it inevitably ends with the person who asked for it going "Well, I don't like that as much as you do because (wrong WAR/too much hindsight/not enough hindsight/butterflies flapping wings/whatever)." and you've wasted all that work.
  3. I was thinking of "team" as what we have on paper right now, "results" being what we did in 2012-2014. If the team hadn't been losing so much, the payroll would have been less suppressed. And they've admitted to underspending their means.

  5. Yep. If you gave me a chance to do-over with an unnamed, generic, saber-savvy young GM who was interested in a true parallel fronts approach, I'd take it. If the Cubs miss the playoffs this year, and at worst that's an even-money proposition, they're 0-for-4. Coming back from 0-for-4 to a respectable ratio is not at all a gimme putt even with the kind of young talent this team has. A good GM could have had this team humming along with a solid team, a solid farm system and some solid results the last three years (with a non-zero chance of a WS title in one of them) instead of going nutso on 1 of the 3 and now finally starting to see it bubble up in the other two.
  6. Kris Bryant is tied for the team lead in position-player fWAR.
  7. It has definitely crossed my mind before. If Bryant goes to LF eventually, it makes wonderful sense as a starter.
  8. We're all very impressed you took the time to write down all their names, Ash.
  9. I would be just fine with any of those lines and plus defense at 2b. That'd be at least a league-average player, probably a shade better. Guys who can do that at 21 are pretty rare.
  10. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2015&month=0&season1=2015&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=16,a I really, really hope FIP is right and there's nothing wrong with how Lester is pitching.
  11. I'm just trollingemploying hilarious satire. Real talk though: Our pitching is scary and iffy and we haven't done anything yet but be 2 games over .500. We can enjoy Addison Russell Day without throwing down handies for our GM Team President.
  12. It's the game thread, I don't have to be rational. I'm gonna claim that Bryant and Russell fell into his lap and was all luck.
  13. @#$! Theo for blowing off three full seasons to do it. And all it would have taken was for the Astros to take Bryant and leave us with Appel and Beane not going nutso and we'd still be talking about how he hasn't had enough time to fully implement his plan. I'm going to enjoy every second of this *and* refuse to give Theo any credit, and all ya'll can just deal with it. refuse to give theo ANY credit lmfao you [expletive] idiot I'm going to give him negative credit just to spite you.

  15. theo always said this [expletive] was going to happen @#%# Theo. This is fun, but he still doesn't get to take a bow for being awful and passive for three years. Liriano is good and all, but I still like that Soler, Bryant and Russell get to see a lefty tomorrow.
  16. Fowler Soler Rizzo Bryant Coghlan Castro Montero Pitcher Russell
  17. It feels like they are putting their foot on the gas and just accelerating now. Next week trade Almora for an awesome young pitcher, please.
  18. The first time I ever saw a top-100 prospects list was in a pre-season magazine I bought in like 1995. In the 20 years that followed, the Cubs debuted three top-4 prospects total (Wood, Patterson, Prior). This makes two in a week.
  19. I figure by the time BABIP remembers Soler and Bryant exist, Lester will be awesome and the bullpen will be healthier.
  20. Maybe he really will BABIP .400 his whole professional career.
  21. I'll love it until the first time someone important Corey Patterson's his knee on a play where he's out by 20 feet.
  22. Bryant's going to be at 0.4 fWAR through four games, all against tough righties.
