  1. I vote you guys take this to the Harper thread so we can psych people out by having it jump forward five pages in a day.
  2. All wins are good wins. They still aren’t a great team, but the middle and bottom of the west is awful
  3. Up 3-1 in Detroit. A win temporarily puts them in a playoff spot, although I haven't checked out who else is playing in the Western Conference and it's a giant pile-up right around them. They'll leapfrog four teams. I'm shamelessly watching whole games instead of just highlights now that they're making a run.
  4. I was gonna make a joke about signing 51 0.1 WAR players instead of one 5-WAR player, but I guess Theo beat me to it
  5. It’s absolutely true that a lot of popular perception of autism is ableist stereotyping. But in this case, I don’t see it as the “emotionless automoton” stereotype but more literal-mindedness. Bauer isn’t saying anything there that most professional athletes trolling for slumpbusters aren’t thinking. You’re just not supposed to say it out loud.
  6. DAE remember the old Usenet rec.sport.baseball and that one dude who was super prolific about defending Ty Cobb
  7. Everyone is a contender in the 2019 NL.
  8. One point out of a playoff spot
  9. 8 combined goals 15 minutes in. High scoring NHL eras are the best
  10. yes but also if the cubs kill him now he could be reincarnated as a better pitcher and back to the team by 2040 We won’t be able to afford him after giving an extension to a 56-year-old Cole Hamels
  11. If he goes to the Giants, they’ll have him and Grant Brisbee, so I vote we all just pretend like they’re the Cubs for at least one season just to see what it’s like.
  12. Just because I think a common usage is dumb doesn’t mean I’ve never used it. I say dumb things all the time
  13. At no point did they rule any longer than an ordinary champion does
  14. Were the 2009-15 Blackhawks a dynasty? Nope. And it always annoyed me that people tried to claim it. Anytime we have a perfectly good word for describing something, fans have to stretch it because they really want their favorite to qualify. And then the stretch gets stretched. And then the stretched stretch gets stretched. Next thing you know, you get something blithering like the Cubs winning two division titles and having two split wild cards being put up as a possible dynasty. Dynasty was coined to describe things like UCLA basketball under Wooden or the post WWII Yankees. I’m willing to allow for a little bit of a stretch to something like 3 straight titles or 4 in 5 years, but even that is starting to water it down quite a bit.
  15. Were the 1998-2004 Cubs a dynasty? Resume: Winning season more often than not Won a play-in game before it was even in the rules Iconic 1998 Home Run Chase Murderers' Throw 2001 team super underrated, would have been replacement for Giants in the WC game if their plane had crashed and the WC game had existed back then
  16. I won't call the Giants a dynasty either. They were a lucky-hot second-tier team most of those, and they didn't win any of them consecutively. The last MLB dynasty was the Yankees.
  17. Its not a bad general rule, but I'd call the 1 championship 90s Braves a dynasty. Denied.
  18. I know that accolade creep is inevitable in sports (how many generational talents can one sport have simultaneously?!), but I'm gonna draw the line here. You do have to win multiple championships to be called a dynasty.
  19. A few years ago, for the record, means 12. That was the 2007 team. I'm old and time goes quickly.
  20. http://images.performgroup.com/di/library/sporting_news/cb/59/sammy-watkins-fail-102614-twitter-ftr_wa6r5rcp0531bk7yo5k0f0wj.jpg
  21. We spend all year mocking PECOTA until it becomes eerily close to right, like the White Sox fans a few years ago.
  22. Tangent: even if that’s true it still sucks
  23. That’s the MO: throw random stuff at the wall from different accounts and if one sticks, you suddenly have credibility. The fact that we are (even ironically) quoting that turd repeatedly is the most disappointing part of the most disappointing offseason in team history.
  24. I genuinely want this season to be an absolute disaster. It helps to remember that all our rivals also exist for the profit of shitty white billionaires and their fan bases are also mostly racist because that is just baseball’s demographics. So think about how sad the Cubs being good would make them.
