  1. Removed bad math, correct numbers appear a few posts up.
  2. Why do you want an answer? It's a stupid, pointless question. You're not arguing but obfuscating at this point. no i'm not. olerud's contributions to the scoreboard were less than Sosa's. The percentages posted on the previous page show that was entirely a matter of opportunities created thanks to his teammates. right, which makes me ask the question again: given the same opportunities as Sosa, would Olerud have driven in as many runs. why won't people answer? I did. No. But his presence in the lineup would have caused more runs to be scored through other factors.
  3. Man, your arguments are awful, Derwood. i want an answer. Olerud, according to him, was better and drove in runs at the same % as Sosa. so, i repeat my question: would Olerud have driven in 158 runs on the 1998 Cubs? No. But between the runs he did drive in and those of his teammates who got extra at-bats because he didn't make outs and the runs generated from him getting on base extra times, the sum would have been better than 158 runs.
  4. Good thing Maine saved up all those extra pitches in the first two innings.
  5. because we have been playing .500 baseball with our current roster for the last 2 months? Fun with arbitrary endpoints.
  6. Cruddy Central Division teams that sneak into the playoffs with sub-90 win totals could never, ever possibly win the World Series.
  7. Soriano, Jones, Floyd isn't that bad on paper if you look at their last healthy seasons. ...and let the rationalization begin. If you need a cavaet to say that you aren't bad, that means you are bad.
  8. If you are in the playoffs, you are championship caliber. You don't have to be better than the other team to win 4/7.
  9. If 83 wins is enough to win the division again, the Cardinals might sneak in there. Otherwise, they are toast.
  10. Few people who aren't Cubs fans would classify him as one.
  11. If you keep pulling players who slump, all you do is guarantee that you'll get each player's slump in the lineup but never the hot streaks that follow.
  12. I remember that well. Specifically, they lost 8 in a row, then immediately turned it around and won 12 in a row. I don't recall any other team having such a long winning streak immediately on the heels of such a long losing streak without even a single game between the streaks. If I really strain my memory, I want to say that the streak was snapped when a player reached over the wall (not a jump, it was a very short wall) to take back a Sosa homer that would have saved the game for the Cubs with two outs in the ninth.
  13. You can't teach pitch recognition. It's a skill based on eyesight and reflexes, and if you don't have it there is nothing you can do about it. Patterson had other, raw athletic talents that let him do decently in the minors, but no amount of coaching could change that basic fact. That's not even in the same universe as truth. Duly noted.
  14. It would have happened in 2003, too, if Prior and Wood hadn't gone on an incredible streak.

  16. its a lot easier to hit hrs if u cheat Irrelevant to the discussion.
  17. Fontenot continues to refuse to make acquaintance with Earth.
  18. If I never hear another Harry Caray impression, it will be too soon.
  19. There are tons of walk-off home runs. There were three just today. There are very few that put you within five of the most important record in the game. SC made the right call.
  20. Pie bunting. They can't get an out on their own, so let's give them one.
  21. Who were the people who actually thought they were good in the first place? I was fooled..I admit it. Tsk. Tsk. Thou shalt not buy into NSBB hype. Wait a minute, we're writing off Fontenot (or even Theriot, for that matter) after 41 career ML ABs, in which is OPS is over 1.000? I just want to be clear about this. B/c if Fontenot is disappointing some of you with his performance so far, you really should turn off the TV, shut down the computer, and walk away from baseball forever. He's not going to OPS 1.000 for his career. He might end up being the worst player to ever play the game. But he's been fantastic in his very short ML career. To say "the honeymoon is over" b/c he's 0/2 today is the dumbest thing I've read in a while. The honeymoon started with just a couple of games. I don't see why it can't end just as quickly. For some the honeymoon began when they saw him producing very solid numbers in the minor leagues. Semantics, but I wouldn't call that a honeymoon.

  23. I don't think that's right. It can't be. It depends on how you can't them. Runners left on per plate appearance, or runners left on per inning.
  24. Pie isn't an automatic out. He's been pretty decent since his call up. He's batting .246. Wouldn't really call that decent. That includes his first callup. He's hitting higher than that since he was recalled. So, Pie is good if you only count the times he is good, and you don't count the times he is bad? Got it.
