  1. Hopefully, they hire Hughes and he doesn't like Dunn in LF and trades him to the Cubs for Felix Pie and Roberto Novoa.
  2. LSU continues to have a strong recruiting class. And they still have a chance to sign two more top recruits. I'm happy to see that Les Miles hasn't dropped the momentum Saban created. Rivals has LSU at number five and they could climb higher if they end up signing Charles Deas, Jared Mitchell, and Chris Mitchell.
  3. If they end up with Clemens, Millwood, and Padilla along with Eaton in that rotation combined with their offense, they may have a division winner.
  4. I know it's a slow news day, but I found this nugget as I was doing my daily Internet search.
  5. I heard Rosenthal interviewed on The Show with Kevin Kennedy and Rob Dibble. They discussed Weaver, and Rosenthal said if he ends up with a one year deal, he should have accepted the Dodgers offer of arbitration. At least in that case, he'd pitching somewhere he's comfortable and would have made 10-12 million through arbitration. Boras may have screwed him up pretty badly.
  6. According to Bruce Miles, a deal for Lugo isn't likely. Mike Kiley, Link, seems to echo the same sentiments.
  7. The Miller signing apparently ends any pursuit the Cubs may or may not have of Jeff Weaver. Link
  8. I found this quote in the Cincinnati Enquirer regarding Obrien's firing amusing.
  9. Who are the others? Houston and... New York and Boston? Those are the three.
  10. Texas is on the list of four teams that Clemens has said he'd consider playing for, so yes. It's definitely worth a shot.
  11. Apparently, the Rangers are sending a letter to Clemens's agents outlining the financial parameters of a potential deal. Link
  12. I'm not so sure. Ponson could be healthier since it's hard to miss time with pulled fat. I got $100 that says that pulled fat wins more games than Kerry Wood this year. Make it ERA+ and you might have a deal. Wins are a poor indicator of pitching performance. How about VORP since it takes in account the number of innings pitched? I say loser has to upload a high quality picture of himself in the oppositions hat. Oh and no defacing that hat either. You actually think Ponson will have a higher VORP than Wood. But how about a better bet. If Wood has a higher VORP you purchase me the Cubs hat of my choice, if Ponson has the higher VORP, I'll purchase you the Cards hat of your choice.
  13. Link It's not expected to be major as it is just a procedure to clean-up scar tissue. He's likely to be out 4-6 weeks, which means he could miss the the start of spring training.

  15. Let's look at the last five seasons of ERA+ for both Miller and Raging Alcoholic Ponson. Miller Ponson 2005 89 67 2004 129 90 2003 107 115 2002 130 107 2001 134 85 Basically, when Miller has been good, he's better than when Ponson has been good. When Ponson has been bad, he's worse than when Miller has been bad. Miller has only one season where he was below league average in ERA+. Ponson three of the past five seasons, he's been below average in ERA+. Considering Miller had surgery to correct his problem and Ponson had to go to therapy and Jenny Craig...and considering no one has ever questioned Miller's intensity and drive (he pitched hurt in both 2004 and 2005) while Ponson's work ethic has been roundly (pun intended) critcized. I think Miller is a much safer bet to outperform the lazy alcoholic this season.
  16. Miller is a starter. If you throw out last year when he wasn't recovered from his shoulder injury, he has the following ERA+: 2004- 129 2003- 107 2002- 130 2001- 134 In 2001-2003, he averaged over 30 starts a season. If he's healthy enough to pitch, he's a starter. He's better than Maddux and Williams/Rusch/Hill.
  17. Let me just say that I think this could be a very, very good move. Last season, Miller was bad, but he was trying to pitch through an injury. He should have had surgery in 2004, but elected for rest and rehabilitation instead. The 4 seasons preceeding last year, Miller has been very good. In 2001, he started 32 games with a 3.40 ERA (134 ERA+) In 2002, he started 26 games with a 3.28 ERA (130 ERA+) In 2003, he started 33 games with a 4.13 ERA (107 ERA+) In 2004 before shutting it down, 15 GS with a 3.35 ERA (129 ERA+). Those are great numbers. If Miller can regain anything of his old self, the Cubs will have a steal. He'll be 29 next season, so there's no reason to think he can't find it again. A healthy Miller combined with a healthy Kerry Wood gives the Cubs incredible depth in their starting pitching which creates any number of options regarding midseason trades. While I have been roundly critical of Hendry this offseason, he deserves kudos for this move. I guess I need to get the crashed and burned Wade Miller BandWGN to the shop so it can be up and running by May 15th.
  18. Aww come on! Take it for the team!
  19. By number of seasons, he should be a FA after this year. I'm not sure how the injuries affect service time though. Either way, with a 1 million base, it's a safe bet that if he's back to his 2003 form, the Cubs could offer him arbitration. If he leaves, he should be at least a type B FA.
  20. I'm not so sure. Ponson could be healthier since it's hard to miss time with pulled fat.
  21. Just a quick perusal of RedsZone shows that Reds fans everywhere are pretty excited about this.
  22. Jeff Weaver to the Reds, anyone?
  23. Trade Dunn to the Cubs, please!
