Thats what made me hate him and freaking glad he's gone. I don't see the problem. I complained about Chip a lot too. I met Mercker in Houston and felt as if I were touched by the divine. He's a great guy. I think Stone was more at fault in those situations than Mercker. Stone's an arrogant SOB and most people know it. Adam Dunn has a career 901 OPS. He's 26 years old. Name me some other hitters under 27 that have a 900+ career OPS. Pujols, Cabrera, and who else? Last season his OPS was 927. Of qualified OF, only 9 had higher OPS than Dunn last year. Tha list includes: Manny, Jason Bay, Vlad, Cabrera, Griffey, Berkman, Jones, Edmonds, and Giles. Dunn had a 387 OBP last year. Once again, only 9 OF with enough AB's to qualify had higher. That list includes Giles, Berkman,Abreu, Bay, Vlad, Burrell, Manny, Cabrera, and Edmonds. Of those two lists, many of those guys aren't available. If any were, I'd happily take them. Dunn would make a huge difference in this line-up. It would turn it's main weakness into a strength. True, but at the cost we paid for Jones, and the likely cost to aquire Kearns, is it worth it? You could have signed Eric Byrnes for a $1m deal if you wanted to platoon Jones. I think Kearns has more upside than Byrnes. Kearns has had some struggles in the majors, but he has also had stretches where he has been very good. He's still young enough to realize that as he hasn't entered his prime years just yet. If the cost was Wellemeyer and Williams, I'd probably do the deal for Kearns.

Bagwell lashes back at the Astros. Link. Bagwell has some scathing comments for the team. And it looks like Bagwell still intends to report to spring training. -
But I think the Reds were going to use Dunn at 1B? Throw in Sing, take out Murton? I'm not sure Sing is on level with Murton. I could see the Reds having interest in Dopirak. They could sign a player like Frank Thomas or make a deal for a possible 1b to play in the meantime. The one problem they would have is replacing Dunn at first as they really don't have anyone to man the position currently.

I like Ohman, but considering we have Dempster, Williamson, Eyre, Howry, Rusch, Wellemeyer, Novoa, and Wuertz who can all pitch out of the pen, yes.

Now that the Reds have fired their GM, it's time to make a move for Dunn again. The Reds need pitching. They need lots of it. Here's the proposal: Hill, Wellemeyer, Williams, and Murton for Dunn. The Reds get a high ceiling pitcher in Hill, a major league ready number three starter in Williams, and a reliever in Welly. Murton is a replacement for Dunn. If the Reds don't want Murton, replace him with a lower level high ceiling prospect like Harvey or Dopirak. Allow them to replace either Hill or Williams with Guzman. This would be a good deal.

If the Reds would take a 27 year-old Westbrook, who posted ERA+ of 91 in 2005, 134 in 2004, and 98 in 2003, why couldn't we build a deal around a 23-year-old Jerome Williams who posted ERA+ of 100 in 2005, 105 in 2004, and 130 in 2003? I know that Westbrook's peripherals look better than Williams, but Williams is older and has put up some better seasons, including a better performance in the most recent season. Why not offer Williams and Wellemeyer for Kearns? Murton, Kearns, and Jones could split time in the outfield. I'm not the biggest fan of Kearns (I think it is well known that I'd prefer Dunn... :D ), but Kearns is only 25 and should have a few good years ahead of him.

I think one of the keys of Palmer and Thorn and others is that they have tried to put these performances in context. Statistical analysis provides that context. Park factors and adjusting to league norms provide that context. Bill James's work with win shares is attempt to contextualize. So, when those of us who are statistically inclined look at these numbers, we are contextualizing. DIPS attempts to contextualize the pitcher's performance and isolate it from the performance of the defense behind him so we can determine exactly how the pitcher performed. All of these "newfangled" stats are attempts to contextualize.

Don't worry about putting too much time or effort into wishing about Deas. Deas is either headed to Auburn or to FSU, probably by way of Hargrave Military Academy or JUCO, depending on what his next few SAT scores are, since he's around 100-150 points off (based on the new scale scoring), according to rumors. Deas visits LSU this weekend, so there's still hope.

Many have held their beliefs long before Moneyball. I believe it was the late eighties when I first started reading the work of Palmer, Thorn, James, among others. Moneyball may have brought to light what many of us already were aware of.
