  1. Around the Joe Horn has officially changed its name to Smells Like Tuna.
  2. I think the date is June 15.
  3. I think it was so those in baseball's front office didn't have to wait up all night for the trades to come in.
  4. Good luck with the Fathers, Todd. You will be missed.
  5. Its easy. 1) Defense is not our problem. 2) Maddux's contract was up after this year, so his millions come off the book, we could spend it somewhere else. 3) Izturis's contract is in the range of $4-5.5 million for the next two years for production (both defense and offense) that is the same as Cedeno's who would do it at a fraction the cost. edit: 4) we could have had one of Los Angeles's better prospects (who were cheap and have a WHOLE LOT more upside then Izturis) insted by most accounts. How the hell do we know that we could have had one of LAs better prospects? Just because somethings been reported doesen't make it the truth. Will Carroll is very reliable. But even if you don't want to believe we could have had Kemp or Guzman, please address the other 3 points. So if they are such great prospects and be can't misses, then do you really think Hendry would pass them up? I agree with point 1. Point 2. What was Maddux making this year, 9 million? So now there is 4.5 more to spend. Point 3. If we upgrade the outfield are Izturis and Cedeno going to hurt us offesively? I don't see much hope for upgrading the OF. Jones will still be here. There's not enough chance to upgrade to make up for the atrocious offense Cedeno and Izturis will provide.
  6. What makes the trade so poor is Izturis' salary for next season. If you received a prospect, even a mediocre one, there's little resources used from next season's payroll. As it is now, there is going to be 4.5 million tied up in a palyer that will be a black hole in the line-up. The trade, more than anything, reinforces the idea that Hendry has no idea how to build a contending team. I've typed this in some form four to five times today and I'll say it again. As long as Hendry is in charge, the Cubs will not make the playoffs.
  7. So instead of secondbase, breast cancer just hits them out of the park.
  8. I'm not sarcastic at all... Hendry said he "can't put his finger on what went wrong." I think he still thinks this will be a good team next year. My guess is he'll keep this offense intact by re-signing Pierre and plans to have a line-up of: CF Pierre SS Izturis 1b Lee 3b Ramirez C Barrett RF Jones LF Murton 2b Cedeno He may add one bat for the outfield. He'll be utterly surprised that his team that can "really catch the ball" finishes 20 games out of the race again next season.
  9. What...so you think Cedeno will become a better hitter for power than Walker? Seriously? Excuse me....but I'm having a hard time typing because I can't stop laughing....This year Walker had his lowest SLG% in 7 years at 390. I'd be surprised if Cedeno surpasses that mark more than twice in his career. I'm almost certain that when their careers are over, Cedeno will come no where close to Walker's 437 SLG. I'd have no doubt that Cedeno won't get anywhere near Walker's career 347 OBP. Cedeno may surpass Walker defensively, but his offense will pale in comparison.
  10. Anyone wanting to sign Maddux will wait until the Dodgers decline to offer him arbitration. He would accept if anyone does, and that team will pay him 10-12 million for next season.
  11. Yes, but at least Izturis is 25-30 points better OBP, more if he can come back to the form he was in before the injury. He was still quite bad in his career year. If Hendry is thinking of keeping Izturis, Cedeno, and Neifi around for the middle infield next year, it might be one of the worst middle infields in club history. I doubt there is any might to it.
  12. I think Cedeno gets the rest of the year to prove he can handle 2B defensively and start making the adjustments to be a productive major league hitter. If not, I think Hendry either uses him as a trading chip or he gets more of a utility role next season. Even if he can handle second base defensively, he will be subpar offensively there...even more so than he would have been at SS. It's likely that if we pencil in Cedeno/Izturis at 2b/SS, we'll have two hitters, both with a line that when optimistic is 288/301/344. That's atrocious.
  13. If that's going to be the infield, and you already have Jones for the OF...this team is going to be horrible offensively next season. Getting one more bat in either CF or LF isn't going to make this team a contender. I don't have any faith in Hendry. Considering he didn't trade Pierre, I can see him being brought back. And lo and behold, look forward to almost this exact same offense with maybe a bat in LF (Soriano or Lee). That is not going to be enough...not even close. I hope I'm wrong, and I'd love to eat crow if I am, but with Hendry in charge we will not make the playoffs.
  14. Cedeno is Shawon Dunston without the power. Izturis is a Rey Ordonez clone. Yet, that will be our middle infield for next season. Excuse me if I'm not excited.
  15. That's funny because I could probably explain it to him in 100 words or less.
  16. Prior keeps adding to what has thus been a crappy day for Cubs' fans.
  17. I'm glad you're optimistic, but I fully expect to see a Cedeno-Izturis middle infield next season.
  18. I thought a quote by Buster Olney on ESPNnews was telling. He said (I'm paraphrasing) that the Dodgers were about to give up on getting Maddux until they learned that Hendry would do it for "only" Izturis and then they "jumped" at it.
  19. The reports I've seen haven't mentioned any minor leagures at all. Same here. It appears the deal is Maddux + 2 million for Izturis. I simply can't believe that. There must be something else.......right? Our GM is Jim Hendry, a man who still wants to extend Dusty and has uttered that he likes guys who catch the ball. What do you think?
  20. The reports I've seen haven't mentioned any minor leagures at all. Same here. It appears the deal is Maddux + 2 million for Izturis.
  21. If Izturis was signed at a 1.5 million salary, at least you could say he's a slightly overpaid bench player. As it is, he's a waste of roster spot and will be a waste of four million next season. There's no way this team will be able to contend next season either. It's hard to believe Hendry is this clueless. I've said that before, but he keeps providing more and more evidence that he is in way over his head with this job. After this trade, I really wouldn't be surprised to see a Dusty Baker extension announced in the next few days.
  22. I at this point can't see how anyone with any baseball knowlege at all could still defend Hendry. I hate making this prediction, but the Cubs will not finish higher than fourth in the NL Central as long as Hendry is running this team.
