  1. The last thing I'm interested in is how big of a name the manager has. I don't want the enthusiasm to be built on the name of the manager, that should be determined by the level of player acquisition Hendry embarks on this winter. I, for one, don't really care about tenure. Whether the next manager is here for 3 years or 10, all I care about is they win. Some managers come in and win one, then leave, as they either wear out their welcome or lose the desire. Joe Torre and Bobby Cox are the only real staples of the managerial business. Scioscia is close with his 6 years and level of success. I really have no interest in getting a guy like Bochy to be there every year and pretty much maintain a level of mediocrity that does little to inspire. Stability is overrated in sports if it doesn't come with success. I'd much rather have a short and volatile era than a long steady, and ultimately unsuccessful period. Agreed. Get me Davey Johnson who will piss everyone off in route to winning 2-3 penants. I'm not opposed to Girardi; however, once again let me state my candidates on order of preference. 1. Dierker 2. Johnson 3. Gonzalez I'd be happy with any of the three. After that, there's a number of names I might be ok with, but I'm not overly excited about. Girardi is in that group.
  2. Well-written or true and correct? I'm not sure i agree with either, but I'm just curious which you meant. I'd say both. I don't often agree with Mariotti, but I definitely think he has a grasp on this situation. I think his article would have been stronger if he had left his personal experience out of it, but I think he did a nice job with the topic. I think he's interpreted Dusty's motives in this issue very well.
  3. It is a very rare, but well-written article by Mariotti.
  4. He was trying to bounce it there. He mistook it for a super ball.
  5. If the Cubs are going to shell out 12+ million for an over-priced FA bat, I'd prefer the money be spent on Soriano and that we play him at secondbase. I'm not advocating getting Sori, just that he would be preferred to Lee because he can play second, and if given the choice between Murton or Cedeno, I'd choose Murton every time.
  6. I'm not arguing with the accuracy of his stats. But without additional comments, it's difficult to understand the point he was trying to make (i.e., whether he supported the switch or not). Maybe he was offering no interpretation at all, just data.
  7. And let that be a lesson to all you kids out there. If you have a chance to be a 1st round QB, don't pass it up for some MLB dream that might never come true. Take the sport that will let you get paid, and get paid now. I hope Drew has had a chance to plan his life after sports. Coming out of college, I'll bet there wasn't a soul on the planet who would have said he would be out of professional sports in his 20's. He still made lots of money overall, no? Still has some to make, depending on how he wants to be paid. He can be paid a lump sum of about 2.5 million, not sure on the exact amount or he can elect to be paid yearly between now and 2011 and the sum will be over 3 million.
  8. As I said earlier, the more this season spirals down the crapper, expect some real gems from Dusty. Some, like this one, will show his blatant hypocricy in dealing with his players. Others will reveal his incoherent thoughts. Don't get upset. Sit back and enjoy the ride. It will only be painful if he's retained after the season.
  9. Further proof ot the riot's banishment--- Link Isn't Theriot a "true" shortstop? Hasn't he logged sufficient minor league innings at the position? Doesn't he play it pretty well?
  10. So much for the idea that we'd finish the draft with enough time to talk smack and trades.
  11. wow..that sucked. Pretty much the appropriate punctuation to the season.
  12. Holy Shnikees! I hate the Cardinals, but Rolen is the best defensive third-sacker I've ever seen play.
  13. Tell-tale signe Weaver sucks- he's giving up hits to Freddy Bynum.
  14. It's a miracle! 29th miracle this season !! I know you're still upset you missed his HR. :)
  15. Sutcliffe playing the "hard working" angle for Pierre.
  16. I'm really excited about the Cowboys defense this year. The first team has only allowed a FG in three pre-season games and overall Dallas has only given up 17 points. My only concern is that Dallas plays in a very tough division and they will need to be on top of their game each and every week.
  17. Or it means he's having a flukish hot streak, much like Neifi had at the start of the 2005 season. Problem is that Neifi didn't have a career .300 avg and .350 OBP. Funny how everyone just assumes that Pierre is going to suck for the rest of his time in baseball. There is no reason Pierre can't return to his career avg. in OBP or BA. In Pierre's defense, he had a horrible start as a Cub. But even with the horrible start, his current numbers are very similar to the numbers he posted last season. I think what you see with Pierre is pretty much what we're gonna get.
  18. His defense is not that bad. Unless, your talking about his arm? Again, 0 errors in CF this year. Errors are not the best metric for judging fielding efficiency....especially for an outfielder. How many extra bases does his arm give up?
  19. I was actually looking forward to hearing your case for Ryan Howard. ;) First full year, he's stronger than Atlas and putting up the numbers to show for it. Won the HR derby. Hell, I just like him a lot. Scary if he gets better. Philly has a scary team if they keep Burrell, get a pitcher, and can find players for the top of the lineup to put Rollins 6th or 7th. He's good...and I suspect will win at least one MVP before his career is over. This year, the numbers point to the 38-yr old in St. Louis. :)
  20. I was actually looking forward to hearing your case for Ryan Howard. ;)
