  1. Had Bonds enough PA to qualify, he would have led the NL in OBP. He solves our biggest offensive problem, gives our line-up a needed LH bat, and brings plenty of power as well. He also doesn't require a long-term commitment. What's not to like? Get on board, Jim.
  2. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cubs add Lofton and Church.
  3. I'd give them Hill and J. Jones and their pick of an AA pitcher for Hudson and Andruw Jones at call it an offseason. The minor league would need some serious restocking (but let's be honest, it already does). I'm not sure I'd trade Hill. Hudson is likely as big a question mark as is Hill. Hill is the only one of our young pitchers that we can pencil into the 2007 rotation. Marshall, Mateo, Guzman, Ryu, Marmol....anyone of those they can have...and likely two of them.
  4. I would do that deal. Our line-up would be heavily right-handed, but a very powerful right-handed line-up.
  5. Is there a chance that Hendry finally got around to reading all my posts? Not likely. While I doubt it, there could be something to it. Rosenthal is reporting it done, ESPN close, and MLB.com has said Schmidt told teammates (though it doesn't name the teammates) that he will be a Dodger. I fully expect him to be a Dodger, but if something changed...I guess it's not impossible until the ink is dry on the contract.
  6. I'd rather roll the dice with Tim than go with Gil or Ted. I wonder what the cost would be? Would the Braves have any interest in Jones or Dempster?
  7. Then just ignore the thread. Just because Hendry isn't smart enough or creative enough to consider it, doesn't mean it isn't worth discussing. The pitchers left on the market aren't worth pursuing; however, the best hitter on the market is still available for the taking and without a long-term commitment. Bonds would make this team immensely better.
  8. It would be a waste to throw 20 million away on the likes of Lilly and Meche. What is left on the pitching market isn't going to make this team a contender. The Cubs are better off rolling the dice on Miller and Prior's health and the development of Marshall, Mateo, Ryu, and Guzman than to spend loads of cash on Meche and Lilly. So, what can be done? Turn this team into an offensive juggernaut by signing the best FA available. That's right, Jim. Barry Bonds is there for the taking! He's even arrived in Flordia (Link) looking for a job. Add Bonds for LF, trade Jones for whatever, and trade for Church. Viola...a top five offense. RF Soriano CF Church 1b Lee LF Bonds/Murton 3b Ramirez C Barrett 2b DeRosa SS Izturis Nice line-up.
  9. Well, on mlb.com, it appears the source for this is Schmidt himself as he's reportedly told his Giants teammates that he's joing the Dodgers. Link.
  10. What's interesting is while Rosenthal is reporting this as done, ESPN is saying it's close. While there may be little difference, I'm not sure if we might be a little premature in declaring him a Dodger or not.
  11. Apparently, Schmidt did want to stay on the coast. He gets his wish and he gets the bucks too. It's not an excessive contract, but he still is making some change.
  12. From the looks of it, they have very little tied up in contracts in 2007/2008. They could probably afford it. Possibly, but Dunn wouldn't be under Pittsburgh's control for long. The rest of his contract: 2007 - $10.5m 2008 (Team Option) - $13m or a $500,00 buyout I'm firmly in the Pro-Dunn camp, but why Pittsburgh would do a Dunn for Duke trade straight up escapes me. I can't see Cincy throwing any worthwhile prospects into this deal and Pittsburgh would only have Dunn for two years, maximum. I also have trouble seeing a Jones for Duke swamp for similar reasons, although I think the Cubs have better pitching prospects to throw at Pittsburgh and more money to sweeten the pot. There's also rumors Dunn can void the last year (team option) if he's traded.
  13. http://www.technologytailor.com/photo/38_foto_1.jpg Hi Guys!
  14. If Meche or Lilly is the best we can do, I'd rather the Cubs spend on Bonds and let the kids man the rotation.
  15. Hidalgo had some good years, but either, injuries, age, or lack of steroids has deteriorated his abilities. Last I heard, he was performing well in Winter Leagues. He always played pretty good defense and had a canon for an arm. I'd prefer him on the bench than having Pagan.
  16. I'd do Jones for Duke and even pay some of Jones' salary.
  17. My issue with saying the Cubs need to hold on to all of these young pitchers is at the same time Hendry is offering 4-5 year deals to pitchers like Lilly and Meche. That is going to block most of these kids unless he plans on letting Zambrano walk after this season. If the kid really is untouchable, he shouldn't be blocked by a player with a 5 year deal that will be earning money that will make the contract virtually immovable.
  18. Some things are more alive and well than many believe.
  19. The Jays are almost to the point of pulling their offer to Lilly. Link.
  20. Bruce debunks the idea that Jones has formally requested a trade. Link.
  21. The Cubs.com article (another thread i think) says that our preference goes: Lilly, then Schmidt, then Meche. Does this mean Lilly is more affordable, or they like Lilly better? Probably they think they have a better chance at landing Lilly.
  22. Let's just give Schmidt a 2/36 contract. We have the bucks and there's no long term commitment.
