Vance didn't break any rules. Correct. The newspaper set no standard as to who could vote. If so, then we could debate. Asking for people outside the area to vote may violate the spirit of the contest, but it isn't prohibited. At least not by any statement made online or in print. I agree with Chris's statement. If they set the rules, they should follow them. There's a lot of ways they could deal with abuses. They could set the circulation area as the realm from which they will accept votes. They could require all votes to have a name and valid address included whether mailed, faxed, or emailed. They've done none of this, and I know why. They want to be able to make advertisers and the public believe there is a great interest in who they cover. The first year they held the vote, it had less than 150 votes total for all teams. Last year, when we all got involved it doubled. And now you see what happens. They like the interest it generates, but they still want a certain outcome.
