  1. Also, when the rumor of Payton going to the A's originally surfaced, many believed it was a sign that Kotsay would be moved. Now we know Kotsay is staying, so it does add some doubt to the fact. Payton isn't a guy I'd want. Apparently his being DA'ed was a result of a confrontation with Francona over playing time. This is not a personality you want on the team.
  2. I'll take this in two angles. The first, I'll choose former Cubs who are still active as if I have to have the numbers they have this season. Pitcher: Tom Gordon Position Player: Moises Alou Bench Player: Matt Stairs Ok...now just adding any former Cubs from their prime year: Position Player: 89 Shawon Dunston Bench: 89 Lloyd McClendon Pitcher: 89 Les Lancaster Ok, I know I chose all 89 Cubs, but with the hole at shortstop and our weak bullpen, I think those guys could help.
  3. When he brings it to your door, does he say "Pepperoni, WOO! Hamburger, WOO!, Bread Sticks, WOO!"
  4. I've heard that as well. Payton wants to go somewhere he'll get regular playing time. That's why he had problems in Boston. He wasn't seeing the light of day trying to get time in an outfield that already included Manny Ramirez, Johnny Damon, and Trot Nixon.
  5. If it comes down to mid-range prospects, I think Boston has the edge there. The Cardinals have the two pitching prospects in Reyes and Wainwright, but it gets thin after that. Boston has top prospects in Ramirez, Papelbon, and Lester. Their second tier is stronger than St. Louis. I could see Boston building a package around Kelly Shoppach. With Varitek locked up, that might interest Philly. Also, if Boston were willing to trade away Youklis in the deal, the Phillies likely bite considering Bell's injury problems.
  6. Jeff, Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. Your father is truly an inspiration to us all. Could you please explain when you decided to make the documentary? What was Ron's initial response to the idea?
  7. Apparently, Woo-Woo is missing. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not. :-k
  8. Wagner likes to run his mouth. It's part, not the only, reason why he's no longer in Houston. In 2003, he criticized management for not adding to the team. He spouts off a lot. I'm not saying he doesn't want to play for the Cardinals, but I think a lot of that is his way of picking the team he felt would most hurt the Astros. Wagner says a lot that I think he just says without thinking, much like the talk that he might retire after this season as well. Also, where Wagner wants to go will have little to do with where Philly trades him. The only instance where that matters is it might make the Cards more willing to pay up to get him knowing he is amiable to re-signing with them.
  9. Ask and you shall recieve. Here it is. A few quotes from Patterson: Sounds like Corey has the right attitude. And this one.
  10. Not Rob Neyer's most acute analysis, by far. Carpenter and Clemens both pitched and both managed scoreless innings, which is a lot better than most of the other starting pitchers managed, including Mr. Dontrelle "I am not really this good and will come back to earth" Willis. Perhaps Rob is just bitter that the Athletics aren't very good. Actually Neyer is a life-long Royals fan.
  11. I think Wagner will be expensive because of the number of teams that he would be valuable to. He's making a nice chunk, but only paying 1/3 of that will help teams. Boston has interest. That alone drives up the price. Who else could use either a closer or bullpen help? Atlanta? I could see them wanting him, but rumor is that they can't add payroll. They definitely have the minor leaguers to get a deal done. Florida? If they're in the race, getting Wagner would be just the move I'd expect them to male. That's four teams right there. That alone drives the price up. Wagner is the type of bullpen arm that would shorten a game for a team. It will likely cost whoever gets them one of their top prospects.
  12. I'd take them, but my wife says another trip to Chicago is not happening this year.
  13. Gammons says the Red Sox have interest in Wagner. With Foulke out for a considerable amount of time, and it's not like he was all that effective when he was pitching, I can see this as the move the Red Sox will make. I expect the price for Wagner to be very high.
  14. Neyer in this chat, agrees that Carp shouldn't have been the starter.
  15. In this chat, Buster Olney comments on the World Cup.
  16. I figure Wagner will be very, very expensive to acquire. It could cost the Cards Reyes.
  17. He's saying the right things, and if he's sincere, I fully expect a rebound to 2003 form for Patterson. Let's hope everything works out well.
  18. Welcome to the best Cubs site on the web!
  19. One of the key differences in the OBP can be attributed to McGwire's 28 IBB to Sosa's 14 IBB. While that doesn't make up for the complete difference, it does show that teams were much more willing to pitch to Sosa. My guess is that comes more from the fact that McGwire had a stronger reputation entering the season. McGwire still walked a great deal more than Sosa that season, but Sosa hit for a higher average. Both had great seasons, and an argument could be made for either. I don't think it's definitive that either was better than the other. A co-MVP would probably have been more appropriate.
  20. Come on, Vance, vote for Lee just to screw with things. I could.....but nah!
  21. Just because Carpenter threw one scoreless inning, nothing is proven. Clemens also threw a scoreless inning.
  22. I think this one would be more workable. Cubs get Dunn. Yankees get Patterson and Leicester or Wellemeyer. Reds get Jerome Williams, Rich Hill, Melky Cabrera, and Phillip Hughes.
  23. It's a decent framework, but I think the Reds would want more (or different players) and the Yankees would want to trade someone other than Wang.
