Ok...this one is going to polls!

Mr. Miles has often touted Atlanta bench coach Fredi Gonzalez as an excellent managerial candidate. Ned Yost has turned into a good manager in Milwaukee after spending time on Bobby Cox's staff; many analysts feel Terry Pendleton (Braves hitting instructor) has a rosy future as a manager, and he was going to be interviewed by the Dodgers until he pulled back yesterday for family reasons. I have no doubt Fredi could be a great one too - hanging out with Bobby Cox for several seasons must be an education and a half. If Baker and the Cubs don't agree to an extension during the Spring, I wouldn't be too surprised to see Gonzalez or Pendleton given an opportunity this time next year. I'm glad I'm not the only one touting Fredi Gonzalez as the next Cubs manager.

I don't know who will win the game tonight, but with Oswalt and Clemens going for the Astros, I like their chances for advancing.

I'm going to agree. How can they not win? When you combine their awesome talent with the telepathic energy from the best fans in baseball, there is no way the team fails.

Our chances for landing Giles are much greater than landing those other players. To get Giles, you must simply outbid the other teams. Many other factors play into a trade that do not play into landing a FA. That doesn't mean we will get Giles. In fact, as I've stated before, I'm skeptical that we will. I just don't see him as the target that Hendry will pursue. On the other hand, the Cubs will have available to them the financial resources to outbid nearly any other team, which makes our chances good if he were a target.

Not saying Jones is that sensational or that he should be a #1 priority but there's not any guarantee that Giles or any other names floated on this board are dying to come to the Cubs. If the Cubs can't land Giles and other good RF in trade, I would prefer going with either Burnitz or trade for somebody like Craig Monroe, instead of siging Jones. Second: On Giles, St. Lou is gonna be a attractive place to sign, and I would be hard-pressed to compete with a team that has been to two straight NLCS, and a World Series, in the last 2 yrs. But if I was the Cubs, when FA opening, I would call up Giles and his agent, and tell them a "plane ticket for Chicago" is ready for them, and start the "process" of luring him to Chicago. The sooner they do this, the better the chances. Don't rag on St. Lou, but convince him, that the city of Chicago takes care of it's players. If Hendry called his agent and put a contract that paid: 2006 12 million 2007 12 million 2008 13 million 2009 13 million Option: 2010 10.5 million with a 2 million buy-out I think Giles would have a hard time turning that down.

The players said so in a poll conducted by SI. That makes it irrefutable fact. And because players love playing for the best manager, they will give us a huge discount in signing them.

It's an undeniable fact that Dusty Baker is a better manager than Tony LaRussa. I doubt I'll get many arguments on this one.

With all due respect this was a little over the line. With all due respect, I find it offensive that someone would come here and claim to be the "best fans." It essence, it's saying "I'm a better fan than you are" simply based upon the team I root for. So, if you don't like it...I really could care less.

Tell it to the players, not me. They're the ones who believe it. You seem to believe it as well. If not why did you say it in your post long before you brought the poll into it. You either believe it, or used it as a trolling comment. Either way, it still blows! Why not go back and have a big circle jerk with capt-budman, big ver, and the others over at Cards Talk? :shrug:

What do YOU think they're basing their opinions on? As pointed out, it's not a scientific poll, but it works for the context that we need it to work. Look at what he said. Why weren't White Sox fans and Cubs fans separated in that poll? Might it have mattered? Who knows? But a lot of AL players wouldn't have chosen "Chicago" because they don't think "best fans" when they consider the scum they deal with at the cell. (My. Dybas, we're looking at you.) The poll means nothing, and if you think it means something, please tell me, who is the best manager? Surely I'd take the players word on that over best fans. I have no idea what would happen if you seperated Chicago fans. I know that about 50% of National League players believe that St. Louis has the best fans. That's pretty decisive, especially in the context of what we're talking about. I have my own opinion on who the best manager in baseball is. That has nothing to do with players giving home town discounts. You don't think that the players might want to play for the "best manager"?

The drug issue has changed dramatically over the last 2 years. Fan support hasn't. I could see how the numbers would change if the drug testing was asked today, but I'm not sure why there would be much of a change of opinion on "best fans". I'm not saying that I agree with them or disagree with them about anything. I'm just telling you what they believe, and in the context of what we were talking about, that's relevant. It's only relevant if those opinions have validity. You can't say they are valid at one point and not in another. If you say the players, because they are closer to the game, should be given weight as to their opinion on "best fans" then more or at least equal weight should be given to the idea of "best manager." My guess is if we had an independent thread in which we were arguing the merits of Dusty Baker as the best manager in baseball, I'm sure you would love to trumpet TLR. If I were to use that poll as a basis for saying Baker is a better manager, I doubt you would place much weight in it at all. But in trying to substantiate your crap of Cardinals having the best fans, which is nothing more than a egotistical circle jerk by a Cards fan, you use this poll. It either means something or it doesn't. If you don't agree with it, why bring it up?

(or don't you take the players word for it?) I agree that the players think that Dusty Baker is the best manager and that St. Louis has the best fans. That's what the players believe. It's their opinion. In the context of the discussion we were having, that's all that matters. So, what you're saying is that just because the players think something doesn't make it so. Therefore, their opinion on best manager or best fans means nothing in deciding the truth or validity of those statements. Therefore, we're back to the fact that the idea that the Cardinals have the best fans is an unsubstantiated myth and that St. Louis is the best baseball town is furthermore an unsubstantiated myth.

40% of these same players thought at the time the drug testing in place was adequate. I'm not sure I'd trust their judgement on much. So, K-town, do you agree with them that Dusty is the best manager, or do the players' opinions count only when you want them to?

Who says I'm "embracing" anything? You're the one who brought the crap up. In context of the discussion we were having. Not in the context of embracing anything. If you don't agree with it, why bring it up. To agree with it and use it as a proof which you tried to do is synonomous with embracing it. :roll:
