  1. I"m amazed that Howry is so successful as basically a one pitch pitcher. He must get some amazing movement on his Fastball.
  2. Has Bruce or anyone commented on the "MLB preventing Cuban buying the team" theory? Do you guys really think that Cuban would really attend a game and sit in the bleachers, if he had no chance at buying the team? It seems to me that the Tribune would want to get as much money as possible for the team, and that an owner like Cuban would be good for the league.
  3. If the Brewers fail to make the playoffs, how much blame will be placed on Yost? Granted he has made some terrible decisions down the stretch, but shouldn't the fact that they are going to have a winning record and have finally brought winning baseball back to Milwaukee count for something? The Brewers are the one team in the NL Central that is set up for having a winning team for many years.
  4. The Cards seem to play tough no matter who they put out there. With their pitching staff and all of the injuries they have had this year, they had no business staying in the race until the last 3 weeks.
  5. Player A: 266/387/556 (2007); 249/381/511 (career) age 27 Player B: 291/336/520 (2007); 272/324/470 (career) age 31 Player A, please. Your stats don't reflect defense or the grit factor.
  6. The daily swings in perception are going to be pretty big a this point, aren't they? :D It will be interesting to see how the Brewers rebound from last nights loss. That was a tough one to come back and then still lose in extras.
  7. they're getting Smoltz and Hudson on Friday and Saturday. He may be the best option they got.
  8. This season has been a crazy one. So many ups and downs, and in 24 hours the outlook went from "being toast" to optomistic again. Too bad that even if the Cubs clinch a playoff spot, they won't be able to celebrate at Wrigley.
  9. Ben Sheets may miss his next start,,,We are in fine shape. He may miss a lot more tha that, and dont forget that we face the Pirates this weekend and most likely miss Gorzelanny and Snell. UMFan83 has Zambrano facing Gorzelanny this weekend in his "Probable Starters" thread cubs.com also has Gorzelanny going on Sunday. Not only that but the unstoppable Zach Duke on Saturday. Career 4.20 ERA, but a 1.57 career ERA in 7 starts against the Cubs :?: cubs.com and espn.com both have John Van Benschoten starting Saturday's game for the Pirates. The Pirates have announced that they are going to start Duke on Saturday so they can have 3 left-handers going against the Cubs. The Astro's pull Oswalt and Williams for rookies and Pirates are gunning for us, reworking their rotation so that we see 3 lefties. Who'd we piss off? Its called stop making excuses and start hitting lefties. I agree, time to shed the Dusty Conspiracy theory/feel sorry for yourself attitude and take care of business.
  10. Sisco looked decent for one year with the Royals, too. With the Cubs current bullpen, Blevins wasn't going to be seeing the light of day at Wrigley for a couple years anyways. Good for him, now he gets called up and has a chance to live his dream. Kendall put up some tremendous numbers for a catcher in August .349/.438/.920. He has been well worth whatever they traded for him.
  11. Why is Theriot trying to hit everything in the air now?
  12. Its about the same as everytime out low-mid 90's
  13. At least Jones and Kendall took some pitches that inning.
  14. He is certainly not getting Harang's strike zone.
  15. Yost is an idiot to start Sheets on short rest.
  16. Id rather bring in Kevin Hart. He just went 2 innings last night, Gallagher is the long man tonight. Or Trachsel I guess Can you imagine Trachsel vs. this lineup? ](*,)
  17. Sheets is going on short rest too? Didn't he just get off the DL?
  18. I only saw EPATT one game down in Iowa, but he had a terrible defensive game and didn't seem to have much range at all. He was also having difficulty fielding the moderately hard hit grounders. I would be interested to hear from people that have seen him more often. Like I said, I only got to see him once, and that may have been one of his off nights, but his poor defense stuck out like a sore thumb.
  19. It's a sad day when I'm disappointed Floyd is not in the lineup. With the wind blowing out and his new found power stroke, it would have been nice to see him out there.
  20. I didn't realize the Brewers pitching staff was coasting along like that. Wish I could be that confident about the Cubs staff.
  21. Is this Paulino a top rated prospect with filthy stuff?
  22. That makes 3. You, Scott and his mom. He might have a dog.
  23. Theriot's story plays very well with the Cub's success this year. Here is a guy that has a great attitude, has had to struggle to win a job and overcame some pretty big obstacles to get to the spot he is at. Who doesn't like to see the underdog succeed? I admit I am completely bias, and I was lucky enough to meet him and there isn't a nicer guy. I'm sure some of that plays into peoples perception of whether he is a good player or not. Once again, who doesn't want to root for the down-to-earth nice guy? I think it is impossible to overlook those personal aspects when judging a player. When you break down Theriot's statistics this year, I think he has done a decent job as a SS. The team would have killed for that type of production last year. His slide since the All Star break has been troublesome though and I don't think that you ever want to get to the point where you are just playing a guy because he is a good guy and completely overlooking his production. I hope that any GM will at least look at options and made upgrades at any position possible. If the Cubs happen into a tremendous upgrade at SS good for them.
  24. i agree that a scout's opinion is valuable, but that's because a scout's job is to evaluate baseball players...that's what they were trained to do. you were trained in broadcasting, and that's a lot different. Your not arguing that a broadcaster (who watches the team everyday) doesn't have more insight into players than a person who simply looks at stats and reads box scores are you? what is that "insight" exactly? sure, he knows who's nice, who's a jerk, who the coaches like, etc, and, no, i don't have that information. but him seeing ryan theriot everyday when he was in AA doesn't give him anymore insight than i have with regard to his performance with the big league team this year. I thought your post was more general than that. When dealing with minor league players, it is nice to get some opinions from people that have actually seen the games/players.
  25. i agree that a scout's opinion is valuable, but that's because a scout's job is to evaluate baseball players...that's what they were trained to do. you were trained in broadcasting, and that's a lot different. Your not arguing that a broadcaster (who watches the team everyday) doesn't have more insight into players than a person who simply looks at stats and reads box scores are you? If you were to attend every single game during the year or see player "a" play 10 or so times a year, there is no doubt you would have more information to base your opinions of a player on, than someone who frequents a message board and reads box scores.
