  1. There is no way that Neifi passed through waivers without being claimed. Who wouldn't want a guy that can catch the ball at a bargain basement price. :^o
  2. Nice way to encourage the rookie's development. ](*,) He could have just said that what Theriot had accomplished on the roadtrip was great.
  3. I may have missed the thread somewhere but Chicagosports.com is reporting Prior to DL for three weeks. Likely will miss the rest of the season. Didn't see who was brought up though.
  4. Who is starting Saturday, now that Mateo pitched today?
  5. Bruce, Do you ever get called into Hendry's office? or treated differently because you cover stories the fans have interest in? or does it put a strain on your relationships with the team and/or players because you report objectively? Personally, I favor reading your articles and posts because you have integrity and don't treat us fans like morons (like pretending that BA with RISP is the most important stat in baseball). :D
  6. I also remember seeing a quote from Maddux saying something to the effect that the reason he waited so long to sign with the Cubs, was because he had really wanted to play for the Dodgers in the first place and with the change in ownership(or management?) that year, the Dodgers never got around to making him an offer.
  7. I know this is stretching, but does anyone else remember the rain delay last week, when Gary Hughes said that him and another one of the Cubs top scouts were flying to Japan for a couple of weeks? Maybe they are scouting other players, who knows.
  8. That would make Hendry's actions somewhat acceptable and understandable.
  9. Completely agree. It is sad for Ronny, but the Cubs can't afford to go into next year with him penciled in at 2B. I wonder what his trade value will be in the offseason? Other teams announcers are always commenting on how much they like him as a young player, maybe he has some value.
  10. Really? Pat and Ron said that Dusty came out to argue-at least that's what I thought I heard. They also said it was clear that he came off the bag too early, so that the ump made the right call.
  11. Cedeno has been horrible since going to 2nd. :x
  12. Cedeno making the case for finding a new 2b next year. :x
  13. It is unfortunate that Murton can only play one position. It is equally unfortunate that the position he plays is stereotyped as a power hitters position. Murton's .358 OBP and decent speed would in theory make him a good leadoff hitter, and his numbers would be a pretty decent improvement over Pierre.
  14. How hard does Mateo throw? As hard as Marmol? I'm impressed by Walker this year. He's been a very steady performer. I didn't know that his defense was rated so highly though. Does he have a strong arm? So, nobody in the SL has a better fastball than Mateo? I thought reports were that his fastball only sat in the low 90's? Do they mean that he has the best fastball with movement?
  15. Why is this concept so hard for some to understand? By looking at team statistics there doesn't seem to be any magical stat that jumps out at you as being most important. OBP -- doesn't appear to be an indicator of a winning team. Only 2 of top 10 OBP teams are leading their division and one division leader is almost near the bottom in OBP. BA -- same for batting average. Only 2 division leader are in the top 10 in BA. ERA -- seems to coincide with Goony's (and many others) theory on pitching first. 3 division leaders are in the top 10 in ERA. Is there a website that shows team fielding statistics? I wonder if defense is valued so poorly simply because of the lack of any type of objective standard. Generally, you can't get a grasp on a player's or teams defensive abilities without actually watching the games. And even if you watch the games, people's opinions on what defines good defense varies.
  16. Please notice that I didn't predict that he would end up like Ozzie or Omar, it's just that they wouldn't have ended up that successful if everyone gave up on them with their pitiful offensive numbers at 26 years of age. I don't see the Cubs as World Series champs in 2007, so I say give him the rest of this year and all of next and then reassess the situation. Bob Brenly made this exact same comparison during the game last night. He seems to believe that SS is one of the most demanding defensive positions and that quality young SS sometimes struggle with the bat before the light goes on. I am going to give Izturis the benefit of the doubt and hope that Bob's theory holds water. For now Izturis is more than qualified to handle the position defensively and simply because of his age I would much rather see him getting the bulk of the playing time over Neifi. Izturis' last full season was respectable. It is possible that when he is healthy again his numbers will continue to improve.
  17. OPS+ per season over first 4 years of career. Neifi 85 70 61 66 Cesar 52 61 88 68 Can you tell me what Izturis' will be the next 3 years? That's what I am really concerned about... No one can say with certainty, but based on his track record, he'll be a below average hitter. If we are willing to give Cedeno a chance, there is no reason that Izturis doesn't deserve a chance. Tonight he looked pretty sharp at the plate. I know that it is only one night, but he appears to be healthy and his swing is nothing like Neifi's (in fact he seemed to be a fairly patient hitter). He is only 26 so lets give the guy a chance and see what he can do.
  18. I would say NO on Byrnes for next year as Starting CF. With the middle IF as constructed right now, the Cubs need a couple of proven players in CF and LF. They can't afford to go into next season hoping that the players they pick up are going to produce at an above avg. clip.
  19. Good! I am very pleased that Dusty even knew who Gallagher was. That tells me that he is at least aware of the players in the minors. Would have been nice to see Sean up here on Thursday. :(
  20. Finally, some good news today. Hopefully Pawelek shows up to spring training in shape next year.
  21. Hendry said that Rusch might get the start on Thursday. Glad they traded Maddux in order to get Rusch some more starts.
  22. Hendry just stated that Izturis has been playing great this year. Unbelievable.
  23. Didn't see this posted, but I haven't read all 55 pages of posts. This comment makes this deal even worse. Hendry could have had a package of high level prospects, but took Izturis? ](*,) Hahahahah, I would have taken any one player in the dodgers system, regardless of age/level/ability over Izturis. How can Hendry be such an f-up? Quoted For Truth. At least an organizational filler type prospect would have been inexpensive. Seriously, what is the problem with Hendry and why is he given a free pass in the media and by the organization? The guy is wasting money left and right on middle infielders that can't hit or get on base. So far this year they have had Perez, Bynum, Hairston, Cedeno, Womack, and now Izturis. Add in Walker and that is about $10M on below average 2bs and SS's completely wasted. What is it exactly that he values?
