  1. Post All Star Murton: .319/.390/.522 (.911OPS) CLee: .311/.358/.512 (.870 OPS) Soriano: .283/.367/.572 (.940 OPS) If the Cubs only played half a season the numbers would look better. But unfortunately, they play an entire season and while including numbers you left out Soriano and CLee outperformed Murton for the entire season, including providing a substanial amount more of HR's and RBI's. In fact if you look at CLee's numbers they are nearly identical to ARAM's numbers last year. Everyone was flipping out about the possibility of losing ARAM, adding CLee would in essence be adding another ARAM-like bat to the middle of the lineup. Sure the cost would be quite a bit more, but without regard to cost, I take CLee everyday of the week over Murton. Once again, I'm not saying Murton won't be good or doesn't have potential, I'm just pointing out that his production (especially power) is not in the same league as CLee's yet.
  2. Lets not get carried away. Murton may be a fine LF someday, but Lee's numbers dwarfed Murton's last year. Almost .895 OPS compared to .809, 37 HR's compared to 13 HR, 116 RBI's to 62 RBI. Murton is not in CLee's league yet.
  3. Kaplan was on WGN radio about half an hour ago and said that he believes the Cubs bid was $24MM. Doesn't sound like that will be enough to get it done, but we'll see.
  4. How about all of the posters who were jumping all over Hendry? I think a whole bunch of people need to apologize for the things they were saying about Hendry. Don't hold your breath on that one.... I'm not sure that Hendry cares. In the end, it looks like Hendry pulled it off.
  5. That's funny. You'd rather give the big money long term contract to the guy who's not as good and it 3 years older. Ramirez was the only FA worth Beltran money. And MLBtraderumors is garbage. This rumor is as valid as any of the other ones concerning Ramirez. Can you imagine Hendry finally caving in to the 6yr/$90M demand at the last minute and Kinzer telling him that it wasn't enough all the sudden? I think other reporters like Bruce will have the inside skinny on what happened. But this story, is the first to actually provide some insight on Hendry's thinking. Not that I agree with it.
  6. Here is a blurb on mlbtraderumors.com regarding ARAM. If this is true, it would certainly shed some light on Hendry's thinking. I'm not defending him, but it would certainly explain why Hendry may have walked away from the table.
  7. Maybe Hendry is planning to empty out the farm for these two guys. From Miami Daily Herald. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/15991908.htm
  8. Why invoke the name of Freddie Bynum on such a bad night?
  9. Well look at the positive side, at least we won't have to watch him loaf around the bases anymore.
  10. His performance as a GM indicates otherwise. What about his performance indicates that he is stupid? what about his performance indicates that he isn't? he took a payroll that's higher than almost every team in baseball and used it to build one of the worst teams in baseball. You are truly asking someone to explain why they think a human being capable of being a General Manager of a Major League Baseball team is not stupid? Just because two people disagree doesn't mean than one of them must be an idiot or stupid. People who think that display a real lack of willingness to understand another person's point of view. Would it have been better if he had stated that Hendry is a "stupid" General Manager?
  11. The guy assembled a team with a 94 million dollar payroll, that managed to lose the 3rd most games in baseball. Any member of this board could take 94 million and build a team that is better. Anyone. Numbers don't lie, Hendry is an idiot. That response shows no willingness or ability to understand the vast complexities of the situation. Look, man, you are welcome to have your opinion and express it. But if you want your statement to hold up under scrutiny of logic and common sense you're going to have to do better than that. Please explain the logic that would tend to show that Hendry has a clue about what he is doing? It is kind of hard to argue with the result of the team that he put together last year. Lets face it, over the last two years Hendry has been a horrible GM and made some awful decisions. I'm not going to judge the entire off season on ARAM, but this year is starting to have the feel of previous Hendry off seasons and it isn't even December yet.
  12. Trading for a 38-year-old slugger with a big mouth who's also known to have been on steroids (trading one of your top prospects in the deal), and then signing him to a 2-year extension should probably be considered as dumb. Isn't it sad that as fans of one of the worst teams in the last 100 years, we are calling another team's trade dumb. Especially considering it is a team that just went to the World Series. The one thing about the Tigers is that they are not afraid to take a risk and get the players they want. They took risks on Maggs, Pudge and the Gambler and those turned out okay for them. I'm also not sure how much more pitching they are going to need next year. So why not trade from a position that you are overloaded with and get something you need? This move tells me that they are trying to win the World Series next year. Not a bad objective. I really don't have a problem with them trading for Sheffield. The part that I find dumb is them signing him to a 2-year extension. Shef is 38 with a history of injury problems. The Tigers will now have him for 3 years. It is a risky move for them, but being in the AL at least they can move him to DH in a year of two if they have to. It will be interesting to see how much his numbers decline (if at all) over the next three years.

  14. They also talked Padilla. Isn't that always Hendry's MO? He always seems to wait until the last minute and use time as a negotiating tactic. Let's hope it works in this case.
  15. With all of the Stat Gurus on this board, can anyone quantify how much Aramis' value is to a team? For example, Aramis = ?? number of victories over 3B (insert Lowell, Huff, Moore.....) It seems that $17MM on any one offense player is pretty excessive and probably money not very well spent. If Hendry takes the money he will save from Aramis and signs or trades for two top of the rotation starters, I won't be disappointed one bit. I realize that will never happen, but I would much rather he focus on getting together a great rotation, than worrying about offense.
  16. I was listening to Kap and Waddle last night and they are convinced that Jones will not be with the Cubs next year. Kaplan was claiming that the Cubs really like Murton alot and want to find a new CF, and RF. I hope he is right.
  17. Maybe reporters in japan arent quite as nosey... I was thinking more of a leak from the MLB offices or Boras.
  18. I can't believe that there are no leaks regarding this yet. Reporters need to get to work.
  19. this web site is not all that reliable but it wouldn't surprise me. Has any one heard Bruce Levine on am 1000 to confirm this? It looks like they might have pulled that story from their website. So my guess is that it was bad info.
  20. That was posted at noon today... before the bids were in. Bruce Levine is pretty good. You never know. :^o
  21. A poster on Cubs.com(I know, I know) is claiming that Bruce Levine has been reporting the Cubs have lost the bid. Can anyone else confirm?
  22. Considering what happened last year, I would prefer the Cubs actually go into the season with more than a bunch of players that they hope are going to play well. Sure this guy may be worth a chance if the rest of the lineup was solid, but the Cubs have way too many holes at the moment.
  23. I think it was at or over $100MM. edited: Reported to be $102MM over 7 years. http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2000/1202/920435.html
