  1. Fair enough. I sincerely hope Neifi is used properly this year, regardless of whether we are looking at Cedeno/Walker or Cedeno/Lugo-Hudson-Tejada-etc. If he starts more than 25 games and there isn't a major injury, I will likely lose more respect for this organization. I for one would have liked to see Nomar back, but am amenable to seeing what happens with this movement towards improved defense. We will have to agree to disagree on the Burnitz/Jones difference. I see Jones as an ever so slight upgrade over Burnitz, and I think you will see him bring the same enthusiasm that made it hard to dislike Burnitz, even when he sucked. What would be really nice is if they insist on trading Patterson and Walker if they could get Hudson and Wilkerson somehow, but I really doubt that happens. Murton could platoon with Jones in LF and give the injury-prone Wilkerson frequent days off RF.
  2. When you say too, I have to ask where it is that you think we have downgraded so far? Unless you are counting what might have been if Nomar had ever been healthy in a Cubs uni.
  3. I wonder if the Cubs will inquire about Hudson? He certainly fits with the strong defense m.o. Hendry is pushing. Could they get Mench+Hudson for Walker+Patterson+Wellemeyer? Cedeno/Hudson would be a very good young middle opinion IMO.
  4. While this has certainly been a disappointing offseason so far, I don't think this team is absolutely doomed. I am sure this has been discussed ad nauseum elsewhere, but what would it take for the cobs to get Huff and Lugo? Assuming Walker is a goner, would Walker+Williams+Wellemeyer+prospect be enough? Those two could fill a whole lot of needs and would make this team one starter a way from being a serious contender in the NL, IMO.
  5. Unless I screwed something up (entirely possible), that would give our current 8 "regulars" a projected line of .287/.344/.457. That wouldn't be the end of the world.
  6. Doesn't this make Walker+somebody like Wellemeyer seem awfully logical? Maybe even CPatt+Willliams for Vidro?
  7. I suppose that is where we are in a grey area (think charcoal). I guess maybe the only way to find out would be to look at the trend in teams success at holding leads in the 9th over the last x number of years as closers have become more prevalent. The problem then becomes controlling for how good offenses were in a given year (roids era or no roids era), changing dimensions of ball parks, etc. I guess I have talked myself out of thinking this is even all that doable.
  8. Do any of the stats guys out there have any info on the success rate of teams with established closers in the 9th inning vs. those without established closers? I think it would be especially interesting to see if teams have gotten better at closing out games since this concept of 1 guy doing most of the closing came into vogue. That is, are teams better at closing out games now than they were before the closer became fashionable?
  9. Personally I think the Cubs could do a lot worse than spending the necessary money to bring in a stud like Giles and "settling" for P-Dub in CF for 1-1.5 years until Pie is deemed ready. A Murton-Wilson-Giles outfield would likely be much more productive than the Holladnsworth-Patterson-Burnitz combo we have seen most of this year, with a window toward the future. Murton doesn't appear likely to turn into an All-Star, but I think it is realistic to assume that he can be a serviceable "3rd" OFer for years to come. If Pie is ready in 2007, we can hopefully sign a young left power bat (I hear they grow on trees) when Giles comes off the books in 2008 or so and be set for the rest of the decade. I am not in love with Wilson, but I think he is better than most here give him credit for. Plus, that outfield leaves us a nice chunk of change to address the SS/bullpen issues.
