    This is great! Ron and game video. They should really do this during the regular season. :D That last pitch looked like it was a bit off of the plate but I'll take it.

    Is he even with the Cubs anymore? I remember hearing a little something about him during ST but I don't remember anything after that. You and Raw might be the only people left on his bandwagon. He was in Mesa this past year, rehabbing, before he had another shoulder surgery and was shut down again. :( :cry:

    John Sickels is naming players of the year for each of the leagues. There are three catagories, position player, pitcher, and closer. AA and AAA have been posted so far and A is going to be posted tomorrow. It is worth noting that these are based solely on the player's performance this season and not on past performance or future ability.     How can you have Pinto at number 3 despite being on your biggest disappointment list and completely bombing at AAA? Did you see Aardsma's last month and a half or two months? It inflated his ERA to close to 4. Also, while Murton was thought kind of highly of, he probably increased his stock this season more than anybody else in the system, outside of Hill or maybe Cedeno. He was rated 2 slots higher than Nolasco in the nsbb top 50 prospects thing at the beginning of the season. If I were to create a list based on more than just performance it would definately include Pawelek in the top 5. Mine would probably look like this (with some assistance from Raisin): 1. Pie 2. Pawelek 3. Harvey 4. Murton 5. Cedeno 6. Marshall 7. Hill 8. Patterson 9. Sing 10. Gallagher

    While that may be true, is it Federer's fault? There's not much more he can do, since he wins just about every tournament he plays. Well, if he wins 20 slams in the next 6 years, then he's shown he's more dominant. but I'll agree with you that it's rough on him (as if he cared) to penalize him because his career isn't over yet He just turned 24 last month, his career is much closer to the beginning than to the end. Saying that he has reached his peak in performance is a little like saying that Carlos Zambrano has. Granted, tennis players can be great at a younger age normally but they still develop as players after the age of 24. You have to look no further than Andre Agassi for evidence.

    He also catches for Maddux who is one of the easiest pitchers to steal on in the league.

    The relationship doesn't matter. The ability to speak to one another does. I agree and if the pitcher doesn't want to listen it's the same thing IMO. I think this is one of the Barrett does very effectively and yet isn't mentioned. When he first came here he was stuck to the side of one of the pitchers almost all training camp. It seems that every time I see him on the bench he is talking to one of the pitchers or to Blanco.

    So now you don't think he should be replaced? You can live with him as catcher? I don't get where this debate is going. I guess everybody is close to agreeing that Barrett isn't perfect, but there probably aren't any reasonable improvements readily available. Except Johjima. 8) Could you post some numbers on him either in this thread or another or point me to where I could see his numbers? I remember reading about him in the Japanese prospects thread last year but I don't remember specifics and that info is a year old.

    That was a pretty weak attempt at reading what I wrote. I never said it was OK that he screwed up. My point is Barrett's defense isn't costing this team wins. Keep the team the same, and replace him with a real live catcher who is available, and this team is no better. There just isn't a catcher who is overall better than Barrett that you can get. All of you ripping him, and yes, you are ripping him, and making it quite clear you want him replaced, are ignoring the very important fact that you would have to replace him with a catcher that is available. And that's just not very likely to happen. What does "odds are, they still lose" mean? And if he is being ripped so what. I didn't know you couldn't rip a player on these boards. It means that Barrett is better than average overall as a catcher and anything that you can replace him with would make your team worse.

    It may be speculation, but it isn't idle. There is no definitive way to know it, but that doesn't make it unworthy of exploring. Numbers are a good guide, not a be all and end all. If there's no definitive way of knowing, why bother exploring it? If there's no answer, there's no use for the question. What are you going to do? Have Bruce Miles ask Prior if he is afraid to pitch to Barrett? Please, it's a waste of time. You're not much on philosophy, are you? When you are using it as an arguement against a player without any proof that it is actually true I do have a bit of a problem with it. Have you ever heard one of the Cubs pitchers in the last two years say that they don't like to throw to Michael or that his defensive abilities sometimes worries them and decreases their effectiveness?

    It really shouldn't be that big of a surprise if he is catching them since he does catch somewhere around four out of every five games and he usually sticks to the pitchers. At some point the pitcher just has to adjust because he can't go through a 162 game thinking oh crap it's Barrett pitching today.

    No, if a tennis player has a bad day they don't have another match because they are out of the tournament. Ask Andy Roddick and his mojo. At least golfers have a chance to make up for a bad day. I know Tiger has in the past. Also, those same weather conditions effect tennis players as well. They may not make as big of an impact but they do change matches at times.

    boston's done all right with some pretty shaky defense up the middle. And Atlanta has done well being solid there. they're also 3rd in the NL in runs and 6th in the NL in era. are you saying their defense at c, 2b, ss and cf is a bigger reason for their success than their hitting and pitching? seattle has the fewest errors in mlb...they must be winning their division by 25 games. But their players up middle of the diamond are horrible! That's why they lose. (forget the pitching outside of Felix)

    Because Bobby Cox always picks one pitcher that will work with the backup catcher to get the regular guy rest. Maddux didn't need any assistance calling a game, didn't have pitches that were particularly hard to catch and prevented runs to the extent that the offense could take a hit and still leave the team with a good chance to win. That and he needed a catcher who could throw better than Javy & Barrett. So a good staff could use a good defensive catcher? Do you think the Cubs have a good staff? That's not the point. If you can find a great defensive catcher that puts up numbers close to what Barrett puts up then I would be all for getting him. The chances are you aren't going to be able to find that, though, and Barrett provides too much to the offense to get some no bat defensive catcher.

    In Ohio no less. Yes, I hate OSU with a passion, and even though Texas is rivals with Mizzou, I was pulling for them all the way last saturday. Plus I want them to be ranked #2 or #1 when they come to Columbia. Ever since I moved to New Mexico, I have been surrounded by Texas fans/alums, and they are perhaps the most arrogant and beligerant fans I have ever seen. Therefore I root agains the Horns in nearly every situation. Trojan fans/alums have them beat. By a mile. Obviously neither of you have met a Packer fan before.

    Nice little diving catch by Buck with runners at 1st and 2nd and 1 out. He then threw it to 2nd to get the runner for a double play.
