  1. That is so incredibly foolish I can't describe it. See my post on the "At the Game Today" thread on baseball discussions.
  2. Glad I'm not the only one who was thinking that way. Oh and to the earlier post, after listening to both (and observing both) Brenly would be a much better manager for this team than Lou.
  3. How does Dusty not arguing a bang-bang call at the plate, show that he can't handle a demanding fan base? Talk about a stretch. I also don't understand how having Sox fans there will make any point to Hendry or cause anything to happen, and it's ridiculous to ask people to sell their tickets to Sox fans so management understands. There are always Sox fans at this series, yesterday didn't seem much different. Honestly do people actually think that Jim Hendry will say "Geez there's a lot of Sox fans here today, I guess the fans are unhappy about this season. The Cubs fans that are here are chanting Dusty Sucks. Well I guess now I have to fire Dusty now and try to win, because I know they're upset won't accept it." Come on. No one in that kind of position is going to be persuaded to change their mind because some fans are chanting "Fire Dusty". It's also incredibly foolish to think that Hendry/Baker/MacPhail don't understand already that the fans are extremely upset about this season. If you want to boo so you can vent and feel better, then go ahead. I just hate this idea that "we have to show the Trib we won't accept losing by not showing up, booing and chanting 'Fire Dusty'."
  4. couldn't resist! What's wrong with that? It's a highly likely scenario and I don't see it as a terrible excuse. Good Lord. What's wrong with it? It's another excuse that Dusty is using to defend the team's poor play. There is no excuse for this team to have the record it has, but Dusty will do his best to try and find it. Is he saying that the team might struggle because Lee won't be himself for a while? Was he using it as an excuse? I didn't read the article, but in the way it was posted I saw nothing wrong with that quote.

  6. He's the next Bobby Cox! Seriously though it's not a bad idea.
  7. Placebo effect?
  8. True. But at least in the NBA they're getting knocked to a hardwood floor (from a few feet in the air) by guys up to 7 feet tall and 260+ pounds. Much different than diving onto their side to a grass field. I'm not trying to call ALL soccer players wimps and in our defense the U.S. team did less diving and crying than most other teams. I'm certainly no soccer fan but I did go into this World Cup with an open mind, but the theatrics are just embarrassing and really turn me (and others I presume) away from the game. That's not to mention the total lack of real scoring threats (not just goals).
  9. We've been hearing that for 20+ years. It's not going to happen anytime soon. If anything I think this World Cup may have turned off more people in this country. A lot of people (myself included) were willing to give soccer a chance after hearing about this team that was supposedly going to put us on the map. Instead we got a horrible showing and repeatedly watched guys flopping and writhing around on the ground after little or no contact. Like others have said, the diving and crying is just pathetic to watch. I shutter to think of what may happen if these guys tried to play hockey or football. I never knew that falling on grass could induce such horrible injuries. Act like a man or at least a youth athlete for crying out loud.
  10. You're not the only one that thinks he's an idiot. Wynalda is laying into Arena pretty good. What a terrible showing.
  11. It's amazing, isn't it? Nice kick Donovan, way to waste maybe the best chance we would have. Italy scored again, so we get all the help we need. The supposed biggest game in the history of U.S. soccer, trying to become a world power and we can't beat Ghana to advance. Only 7 minutes left, goodnight Irene...
  12. Why does Beasley always seem to be so passive? And do they not realize they need two goals in 40 minutes?
  13. And we've scored 1 goal in about 130 minutes thus far? Doesn't look good. 230? Right, that's what I meant. Actually I suppose it would be about 240 minutes. You can only complain about the officiating so much, neither of those goals would have been scored if they would have taken care of the ball and done a decent job of clearing it. Good point (same can be said for the U.S. goal), but that doesn't change the fact the penalty kick should never have happened. Oh I know it, I'm not trying to diminish that. Just that two big mistakes on our own end (like you said, three when you include Ghana's) have led to all of the scoring.

  16. Alright, enough dancing there guy. It's your team's first goal in 3 games and you're still tied with Ghana.
  17. He better be hurt after that. I like how he looked over his shoulder after he went down, and when he saw the guy had a breakaway he started writhing around even more.
  18. Unless we somehow manage to annihilate Ghana, that's pretty much the case. I see both games are on at the same time on ESPN and ESPN2 on Thursday. Should be interesting.
  19. So now we need to beat Ghana and then have Italy beat Czech Republic right? With the goal differential I would assume that a tie in that game would eliminate us, as would a Czech win.
  20. The guy is 24 years old, he's not a finished product. Honestly if Felix Pie came up and was putting up the numbers that Crawford has put up the last two years, I'm sure everyone would be ecstatic and thinking he was a future superstar. At that age hitting .302/.346/.463 with incredible speed while being very good defensively is great, yet some of you act like it's just ho-hum. Most of you talked more highly of Corey after his '04 season than you do about Crawford now. He's 24 years old, he has a ton of talent with developing power and has improved every year in the bigs. Look at the guy's talent a little bit instead of just his OBP. He has the tools which would project him to get better over the next 3-4 years. Look at how much his power has developed since '03. He's not just a slap-hitting speedy guy who doesn't get on base very well anymore. No I'm not in love with speed, but it definitely doesn't hurt. That speed allowed him to hit 33 doubles last year, 19 triples the year before (15 last year) while also stealing 50-60 bases per year at a rate of 82% for his career and combined with the fact that his strikeout rate has decreased allows him to leg out more infield singles. Oh and he's on pace to hit over 20 home runs this year.
  21. Right, davearm pretty much nailed it. You could have a booster who runs the local Wal-Mart (or bar, grocery store, lawn service, etc.) who pays top football and basketball scholarship athletes $100 an hour even if they have no qualifications or never show up for work. It's just impossible to police. It's not very likely that the same will happen in another professional sport. First of all they would likely have more important things to worry about. Plus if an athlete isn't qualified, it will be easily noticed and their earnings are much more visible and easy to track.
  22. So someone's going to use the #1 pick on a return man who has been only a solid reciever? No way. He'll go in the first round, but he's not the #1 pick. Quinn is almost a sure thing if he has another season even close to what he did last year. Back on topic, it's really tough to predict what he will do. Like others said, he isn't a likely top 10 pick at this point, so depending on the nature of the contract the Cubs are offering, the money could be about equal. I guess it depends on where his heart is and where he thinks he can make more money with that second contract.
  23. That sums up my feelings exactly.
  24. It's his first go-round in AAA as a 21 year old CF and he's hitting .267/.340/.435. Not much reason for alarm in my opinion. One week ago his average .283. All it takes is a solid week and he's at .280/.355/.450. As far as him needing two more years, I don't see much reason to say that at this point. Unless he falls apart this year, I don't see much reason to have him play two full years at
  25. I disagree. The combo of he and Walker really can't be worse than Walker and Mabry or Hairston/Neifi/Bynum and Walker.
