  1. It will be a moral victory if Silva can hold them to a run per inning.
  2. No. From today's Baseball Prospectus chat:
  3. I think we will shortly be at that tipping point where we must decide to go real young and see if all our top prospects pan out or stick with aging vets. The next year or two should be interesting. A team with the Cubs resources never needs to go all in with youth like that. Obviously which is why some may be traded away. We have Vitters, Castro, Jay Jackson, Cashner and Brett Jackson who will all within two years be at the normal age and experience level that they get their shot. Do we keep Zambrano or get rid of him (or one of the others) in the next year or so to make room for Cashner/Jackson. Do we let ARam go to make room for Vitters? Does Castro come up this season? When does Brett Jackson come to the majors? All those decisions will have to be made within the next year or two except perhaps Brett Jackson. Lilly may not be resigned, Gorzo can get traded easily and Silva better be gone by then.
  4. A healthy Soriano and Nady will provide the Cubs with some solid OF depth.
  5. There's never been a pitcher who was so good at missing bats that had such a hard time missing bats. He puts up some wacky lines, that's for sure. Similar to Marmol, when he gets the ball over the plate watch out, but when he cant get the ball over the plate, watch out. Harden walks in two runs. He has 5 BBs now.
  6. Because the Cubs drafted him in the 5th round and paid him 1st round money. He got a major league contract so the Cubs are already paying him like a major leaguer. All they need is a textbook explaining sunk costs. I'm not advocating cutting Samardzija but leaving him in the minors until he regains his 2008 form.
  7. Another thread where everyone agrees with each other but gets derailed by pointless semantics. This will naturally devolve into an argument of about the parameters of "most" vs. "every". I can't wait for the season to start.
  8. Wow, I see everyone can't wait for the season to start! Tyler Colvin has a single, triple and homer so far.
  9. Hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes. I didn't see a thread and the game is on WGN.
  10. I have a feeling we're not getting Brandon McCarthy in return.
  11. Nevermind about Shouse; he's a 41 year old lefty. Pass.
  12. Brian Shouse was released by the Red Sox. He's mildly interesting if he will sign for the veteran minimum. He had 17 Ks and 7 walks in a small sample size last year.
  13. 13 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings. Let's hope it was just nerves instead of an elbow problem.
  14. This game is being telecast on the MLB Network.
  15. This isn't remotely accurate. The Cubs got paid $5M (IIRC) to take Silva off of the Mariners' hands. True. The Cubs will have to pay $16 million in the long run unless they trade Silva. His value falls because the new team would be responsible for the $2 million buyout. The Silva deal was clearly the best offer on Hendry's table. The face he painted himself into this corner speaks poorly to Hendry's contingency planning.
  16. I'd like to start 23 games in a row, preferably in September.
  17. Does anyone else want to cover this or shall I?
  18. :-s :-k I mean that the Cubs are paying 8 figures to a guy who will likely not be very productive. Imagine if the Cubs offered $20 million for the 2010 version of Pavano. There would be a riot on Addison.
  19. If Rothschild turns Silva into something serviceable, he doesn't deserve a raise, he deserves a MacArthur Grant. The Cubs are paying 2 years/$20 million for Carl Pavano. Luckily the Brewers are doing the same thing with Jeff Suppan.
  20. Another favorite: "When asked about the domestic violence charge and murder threats, Dukes replied, 'I have to go. I have a video game to finish.'" http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2880144
  21. You might want to focus more of your time on realizing that West Tennessee hasn't been a Cubs' farm team for a few years now. :D Touche!
  22. There will be a silver lining if Carlos Silva opens the season in the rotation. We can all immediately focus more of our time on West Tennessee and Iowa.
  23. I'll happily take that as long as Silva throws 150 pitches.
  24. Example #1 why it matters: 5 years, $90 million remaining on Soriano's contract. Is he even going in the top 100 in fantasy drafts? It's not like defense provides his value. My point isn't to rip on Soriano. It's that the Cubs don't have to hold Castro back a full year, just six weeks. They will also gain a full year of control. Marco Scutaro signed a 2 year, $12.5 million contract this offseason. Starlin Castro will (hopefully) be worth far more than that in 2016. I'd scream for Castro if Neifi was our starting SS this year. Theriot, while not spectacular, is league average. There's no reason to burn Castro's development time to push off an average player. Now, if Baker and Fontenot are hitting .200 on June 1st, I'll reconsider.
