  1. You know, I was as big of a Ryno homer growing up as there was. And I'm finding myself relieved that he isn't the new manager. It'll be nice not having to come to hate my hero with a passion in a couple of years. Wrigley would have gotten a kick out of Ryno getting tossed. The first few times. The tenth time when we're ten games under .500 at the break, not so much. If he's really passionate about being a long term MLB manager then the best place to start is someplace else. Take one of the lower profile jobs available, prove that you can manage without getting tossed every other game and bunting all the time, and then we'll talk.
  2. Assuming the Cubs play .500 ball until the end it's going to be really tough to not give Quade the job. He'll be cheap, and unless he lands the Blue Jays job I could still see Ryno wind up as his bench coach with a handshake agreement that he's the heir apparent.
  3. So you can hand him the locked briefcase, tell him it's full of twinkies, and look back to see him insanely trying to rip it open while you run away before it goes off. Duh.
  4. obviously he was capable, because if it was real it would have done damage. You don't have to be suave, discreet and highly intelligent to cause a lot of damage. It would seem like getting your hands on a real, functioning bomb is like 99% of the equation here. Not hard at all. Says the man standing outside of Jim Hendrys office with a suitcase. Waiting.
  5. Or, gasp, TWO BLOCKS AWAY!?!?!?!!!!
  6. Where do I sign? Right after the clause stating that "Player may reject a trade to any other organization in MLB" If it's 3/36 I just might sign anyway. If things get so bad that you're thinking of trading him it probably isn't because of a crash...it's probably because WE have crashed. Again. And at that point he's probably nodding along to a trade to a contender.
  7. There's also this to consider. If the Cubs don't sign Dunn and go with the best of what's cheap...is there a snowballs chance in hell that Fielder or Gonzalez have any interest in coming here after we lose 90 some odd games in 2011? Seems the smart play may be to get the guy who is feasible and interested in playing here.
  8. The only counter to that I can think of is that if Ryno were to become the manager, and if the 2011 Chicago Cubs are as terrible as I think they will be, I could see Ryno surviving because of his newness when Hendry is fired. The next GM could say something like "the one saving grace of a lost season was Sandberg really coming into his own as a manager blah blah blah".
  9. Damn, couldn't the rest of the league just be nice and let us have a 27 man roster for a week so Castillo and Fuld don't have to waste a bus ride? Not like it would help us much. You could give us a 50 man roster and we're still ten games under .500.
  10. Good luck Bruce, we'll all be anxiously awaiting that interview. Hoping that the crazy bunting scenario that comes up again and again was just a one time happening and not a greater representation of his philosophy.
  11. This. (see username) And BTW, I think using his HOF speech as evidence of his philosophies on managing is pretty worthless. Its an HOF speech (by definition full of self-agrandizing, politically correct fluff), not a job interview. For me it's the little details. If he means playing the game the right way as in always giving 110%, always running hard to first, never giving up and so on then we're fine. If he means something more akin to that one example of bunting that people keep bringing up then we may have a problem. Still, I'm not going to take one off comments from interviews as a blueprint for how he would manage. What would be wonderful would be a whole new interview where he discusses what his philosophies would be if he were to manage the 2011 Chicago Cubs.
  12. I'm dealing with extreme mixed emotions on Ryno becoming our next manager. On one hand, the man was my idol growing up and probably the only reason I'm a Cubs fan or, hell, might as well just say baseball fan. On special days I just have to rock my #23 jersey. At the same time I cannot remember the last Cub manager I didn't grow to hate. So it's going to be strange to wind up hating my idol. All that said I'll certainly be first in line to give him a fair shot if he gets the job.
  13. If he can't find a playoff contender to latch onto we could spend the next month and a half finding out if he can play 1B or not. Not like Micah is going to set the world on fire instead. Hell, not like it would matter if he did.
  14. If they were willing to take on all of his contract though they wouldn't have to give up anything of value.
  15. +1 Yep, this. Since the only two options to root for to win the NL Central are the Cardinals and Reds...I'll go with the Reds. Yes, I'm still bitter against Dusty Baker. If you are too, the absolute best thing you should hope for is a Reds playoff berth. First off, they're going to get their asses handed to them. And what better way to hate on Dusty than to watch him pitch some young guy 140 pitches and see his arm fall off. Plus making the playoffs would instill a deluded sense of grandeur in the Reds. Namely, that they're better than they really are. In 2012 when we're chasing the Reds down the stretch (hey, I can dream) I want Stupid Dusty doing whatever the hell he pleases because "he made the playoffs two years in a row" or "got them to their first playoff appearance since 1995" or so on.
  16. Kind of sad that our best case scenario is him being too injured to ever play again and collecting some insurance cash.
  17. With this season in the toilet and us on the hook for him next year I'd just about shut him down. No reason to risk anything else at this point. Hard to not say we haven't gotten more out of Carlos Silva in 2010 than any of us ever hoped for.
  18. I'm torn. I want Kerry to get a ring but I don't want the Yankees to win the WS. Decisions, decisions. Just wait and see how things shake out. If it's Kerry and the Yankees kicking the Cardinals ass I don't think you'll mind.
  19. Can't really blame a guy for not jumping from a hopeless situation to a slightly less hopeless situation. That being said, if he really were as true blue as he's making himself out to be he'd offer to sign a $3 to $4 million one year extension to prove himself next year. Not expecting him to do so.
  20. To wager a guess it's probably out of fear that the next manager will put him back in the leadoff spot due to antiquated logic. Especially if it's Sandberg who has shown a fondness for small ball.
  21. I hope nobody in the building heard that f bomb that slipped when I saw this. Thanks a lot Tim! [-X
  22. They should fill two birds with one stone and go ahead and film a sequel to "Lost In Translation" during the season, starring Matt. If they could get Scarlett Johanson to reprise her role I doubt he'd complain.
  23. There's a slim chance I talk Megan Fox and Anne Hathaway into a 3 way.
  24. It's going to be strange if Ryno is the next manager. He was my idol growing up and why I'm a Cub fan. Really hope I don't wind up despising my idol...
  25. Kind of hard to argue that injury depth for the Yankees beats injury depth for the Cubs right now. One could see you stumble into a ring. The other could see you stumble into a bar.
