  1. Good God. His team is 18 games out of first. Ended about the same way last year....and all is well? Is it any wonder why this team continues to be an embarassment?
  2. My guess is you are young. I have some bad news for you. You never lose the afflicition that is being a Cub fan. Until you physically die. Fan support for the Cubs will never die. If bad teams killed the fan support.....then the team would have no fans by now. What is happening now is nothing new. Its not an emergency...its not new....its not desperate.....its the norm. Get used to it. Firing the manager wont change a thing (we've tried that many, many times).
  3. Not as of Yesterday: "Here in a grimy chop shop of a ballpark where Cubs seasons traditionally go to die, it feels like we're in a holding pattern, waiting for big decisions to be made. Hendry has issued his first official vote of confidence to his hand-picked manager, Dusty Baker, which means the Grady Little press conference -- or Joe Girardi press conference, if I get my way -- should happen by Nov. 1." 4. That's an old, silly and completely irrelevant argument, as Baker's been doing stupid crap like discouraging patience and starting Macias since Day One. Ok....we play more day games than any other team by far. And we havent won a World Series in 100 years. How silly....why even consider it. I've been watching players, managers, GM's, Ownership, Hall of Famers, bums, and just about everything else, go through Wrigley Field for about 40 years except.......A World Series winner. They all come and go....but one thing remains constant. Wrigley.....Bad baseball teams..... and No World Series.
  5. You can say that again. 07/20 - 08/06 AB R H 2b 3b HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS CUBS 587 59 147 32 3 15 230 56 47 88 0.250 0.307 0.392 0.699 Just a thought. Any coincidence that the same time period has been hotter than you know what.....and the Cubs are playing more day games than anyone else (through a very hot Summer)? I know I'm reaching.....but.......We've tried everything else for 100 years. Build a new stadium! Too much bad Karma in Wrigley. It travels with the team.
  6. I dont see how making a speech makes him managerial material. In fact, I think that picture shows a problem that he might have. He played with a lot of these guys (not just a few like Ozzie) fairly recently. He's only been out of the league a few years. Its one thing to be "a strong clubhouse guy"...its another when you have to confront a grown man and tell him something he doesnt want to hear. Especially guys who were your peers, friends, and co-workers a few years ago. Now you are gonna tell em what to do? Awkward.....and not good. I'm not saying he cant manage someday. Maybe he can. But let him fill out a few lineup cards before you hand him the keys to Wrigley Field....please.
  7. Really? No experience needed? No minor leagues? Nothing? Is that really what the Cubs need at this point? I dont have the answer.....but I think a little managing experience would be a good idea. Was Girardi a bench coach for Torre? I hadn heard that. When? And what is he (Girardi) doing now?
  8. Actually Ozzie: Spent three seasons in the major leagues as a third base coach, including a stint with the 2003 world champion Florida Marlins. At least that's something. I just do not get the idea that just hiring "anybody"....is ok. If it is....then the manager doesnt really matter anyway. So the hundreds of posts about Baker are silly (kind of are anyway). The point is......this is a major league franchise.....hiring someone (doesnt matter who it is) to "try out" managing at the big league level is nuts. By the way.....if Ozzies team had struggled this year he would have been fired by now.....people were just waiting to pounce on him. The team got hot.....so all is well.
  9. I'd say this was worded wrong. How about....."in light of their payroll.....the Yankees management knows what they're doing."
  10. Man am I sick of hearing how great our pitching staff is. And Prior and Wood in particular. Results please?
  11. What is it with Cub fans (and that mega-dope Maritotti)? Joe Girardi? Why exactly? He's a nice guy? He used to play here? Went to Northwestern? He was a catchter and so was Joe Torre and look how well the Yankees have done? (Forget their 200 zillion dollar payroll). I've yet to see any reason to hire Joe Girardi as the manager of the Chicago Cubs. He's never managed anything. Please enlighten me as to why Joe Girardi should be put in charge of a Major League team as his first assignment as a manager.
  12. I'll never forget how Hendry said that Corey was a true 5 tool player and how many teams had inquired about trading for him while he was in the minors, but alas, he was untouchable. Another swing and miss by the Cubs regarding a star position player in the minors. Hopefully Pie will pan out, I would like to see at least 1 stud position player come through the system and contribute in the next five years. Corey and Kid DL, two sure fire studs that it seems have lost their trade value. Let's hope not. That seems a little harsh on the Cubs Front Office. Did you really think at the time, that they should have traded Corey before he even hit the majors? If you can't say yes to that, then you can't blame the Cubs for not doing it either. What about the 2003? He was having a great year, even getting mentioned for the All-Star Game. Don't get me wrong. As of right now, I want him gone. Whether or not he ever puts it together and becomes the star he could have been, I will always admit to loving him in '03 and hating him in '05 - regardless of how it turns out, I can't blame the Cubs. They kept him as long as they should have, and if they get minimum value for him, then so be it. Just Bad Luck. I don't think it's harsh because Corey is the biggest example of the problem. Hendry hung his hat on him for quite a while. I'm just puzzled how the Cubs have failed to have one good starting position player come to the big club in recent memory. When not one of your starting 8 didn't come through your system, I would say it's a little more than bad luck. Choi, Hill, Patterson......all Hendry "cant miss" players. He gets paid to evaluate talent and make decisions with the idea to get us to the series. Doesnt look like it is going to happen anyitme soon. He's made a few good moves.....but Hendry.....like his growing list of cant miss players (and our current head coach) is WAY overrated.
  13. Thats an overstatement. The team won that series. If we are going to look at the past (which I think is a waste of time....and not very pleasant if you are a Cubs fan).....then we can also point to game 7. He was terrible that night.....and it was an opportunity for him to get us in the WORLD SERIES......and he blew it. Kerry has had his moments....and no one would argue that he's talented when healthy. But I think a valid arguement could also be made that he is one of (if not THE) most over-hyped pitchers to come along in the last 10 years. I'm beginning to agree with the "make him a closer" idea. He cant pitch more than 3 innings anyway. The idea that he is going to all of a sudden stay healthy for the next 5 years doesnt wash. The guy has real health issues.
  14. SOME of the content of the article is accurate. Namely....he's a slugger who can no longer slug. That's both sad and true. It's also fair to say that the article is poorly written by someone trying her best to make it sound like she knows what she's talking about....which is doubtful. She doesnt even make the points herself....she defers to "Bob." Bob says he has a "selfish swing" (baseball lingo there) so it must be true....and Sammys hurting the team. Did someone say drivel? I agree.
