  1. I can't take anyone seriously that thinks the keystone piece that turns this team into a legit contender is Luis Robert Jr. Even if Robert's performance wasn't nose diving, no team in their right mind is going to be giving up a significant prospect package for a guy that you can pencil in for half a season on the IL. They might get a couple top 10 organizational prospects in a poor system, but they aren't getting 2 top 100's, let alone 2 top 50's, which has been suggested on this forum that the Cubs give up to get him.
  2. That illusion might save Hoyer's job, when realistically he should be fired the second the final out of the season is made.
  3. That's Nico's entire career. It's the thing holding him back at the plate. He has 0 patience because he can hit anything. He's like Javier Baez, only he makes contact. He needs to inject more Ben Zobrist into his approach at the plate.
  4. Catcher, RF/DH, pitching. Vlad and Tucker are the obvious bats to target. There's a number of catchers they could target that make more sense than Amaya as a starter, because regardless of where Amaya's bat may end up, he's still really bad behind the plate. And take your pick of pitcher, either starting, reliever, or closer. There is no flipside, because not trading some of these prospects is a waste of value. If PCA turns into something at the plate, a guy like Alcantara is not going to make the 26 man roster before he HAS to be put there or DFA'd. We've wasted enough time on this 3 year window Jed carved out with the majority of this roster he's built as it is already. I'm tired of these guys acting like every single one of these prospects is going to be successful when they have successful players at those positions. It's beyond time to start moving some of them to supplement the MLB roster. No one cares if you are winning the minor league season.
  5. Hope is fine and all, but there's really no prospect in the system that projects to be any better than what's on the team currently. More importantly, what is on the team is largely immovable because of NTC's and contract vs performance ratios. Other guys that dont fit in that bubble, like Busch, just aren't going to be traded. So why hold on to something that has significant value but no current use for at least another 2-3 years? It's just stupid. Ballesteros is legitimately the only position player prospect with a path to a starting role on the team. The Cubs could open one up for Shaw but it would require trading Nico Hoerner, which would take a damn big haul in return for them to do.
  6. Even the best rated prospects only succeed at even an average level of play at like a 15% rate. That's why I could not care less if the Cubs traded really any of their prospects. The only ones I would be leery about would be truly generational talent like if we had a Vlad Jr, but we dont. We dont have anything close to that. It makes even less sense for the Cubs to hang on to all of these guys because the MLB roster is pretty well locked down besides DH/RF and catcher. I've always had a chuckle at the discussions that end with people not wanting under any circumstance to trade guys like Alcantara, even though he only has 1 option year left and no position to play on the MLB team. It's almost like people dont want to improve the team.
  7. His defense is bad enough that he should never see that starting role. He's bottom 5% in everything catcher related minus blocking.
  8. The players union can't stop rules being changed. So whether they like it or not, their opinion means nothing.
  9. What is the purpose of getting rid of the opener? Do double headers not exist any more in this world where a bullpen game would be necessary at some point in the schedule? This is trying to fix a problem that is fixed by removing the damn umpire from calling balls and strikes. Its not like doing that removes the home plate umpire from the field. You still need one there to call plays at the plate. Stop trying to tell teams how they are allowed to use their roster and fix your own damn issue.
  10. Those 2 year deals on Mancini and Barnhart really paying dividends. Brilliant!
  11. Hopefully his damn job. It's beyond malpractice to decide this isn't the year and focus on next year, only to STILL go over the tax in a lost season right before someone like Juan Soto is hitting the market. Jed Hoyer has a level of dumbfuckery that knows no bounds.
  12. So Hoyer just said he expects this team to be over the LT by the end of the year. How do you operate in a way that you are focusing on 2025 and wind up going over the tax in a year you started under and then gave up on? This guy is a clown.
  13. How do you get 10 games over .500 with this team? They have a +3 RD. They are a .500 team by definition. Dansby Swansons career wRC+ is 94. Nico Hoerners career wRC+ is 98. Bellingers career wRC+ is 118. Swanson is the only one "significantly" underperforming his career numbers as he sits at 83 wRC+ right now. This team is just overwhelmingly mediocre. It was built for death by a thousand cuts by focusing on strong defense and pitching over strong offense. It's just a bleh roster. We've got a PoBO that doesn't want to sign long term contracts because they dont have a ton of value in the long run. But... he'll spend $69M on his top 3 contracts a year for 5.9 fWAR while he could spend $27M less a year for a guy like Soto and get 7.3 fWAR. It's just a flawed way of team building.
  14. I'm sure you meant to say June 14th, 2024.
  15. One of them is injured and one of them has put up 6x the production of the other in virtually the same amount of games. To act like Houston has no incentive to trade him is laughable. They are a fringe playoff team as is. The likely only way they get into the playoffs is to win their division and they are .001 win % above the Mariners. Bregman is about to be a FA. Tucker is a year away from FA. Unless they can extend Tucker, there's all the incentive in the world to trade him in the offseason because they will be able to get a damn nice return for him.
  16. What are you even talking about? Kyle Tucker was a top prospect in baseball and has had 3 years in a row of 5 fWAR and in 60 games this year put up 3.1. He's always been popular. He's just never been a potential option until maybe now because the Astros havent been able to extend him and they are about to have to build a new core for the future with Bregman being a FA. Dont even try to compare Tucker to a guy that's made it past 100 games one time in his career.
  17. I'd be fine with it too, but it's hard to see where the "bigger" move is going to come from. Obviously there's Soto, which I would love to see the Cubs sign but I'm fairly realistic and I dont have high hopes for it. Then there's trading for Kyle Tucker. But beyond that, where's that franchise thumper this team desperately needs in the heart of the order?
  18. I'm fully preparing myself for a Carson Kelly + Miguel Amaya catching duo next year. Kelly is an under the radar top defensive catcher and Jansen is going to get the big attention. Just feels like a Cubs move.
  19. Posturing for what? They dont have to trade him. He's pre-arbitration with 4 more years of control. The article states the Cubs "aggressively" pursued him and the Angels "firmly" denied them. They didn't even listen. That's not posturing. That's a team not wanting to trade one of their best players that they have no reason to trade.
  20. Also, it sounds like the Angels have absolutely no intention of trading him. So scratch his name off the list.
  21. They aren't going to break the bank for a closer. Just accept that. That's not their philosophy when it comes to relievers. They're already preparing you for a bullpen anchored by guys like Nate Pearson in 2025.
  22. I'll be interested to see what a guy like Jose Leclerc will fetch on the market. He's having a down year with walks, but he's still throwing filth out there at 98th percentile whiff%, 93rd K%, 90th xBA, and when he does get hit it's usually not hard. Probably get him cheaper than the more name brand closers. And he's a fastball/slider pitcher that this organization targets.
  23. Can we emphasize the unique value Paredes bring to the Cubs in that we got a guy you think is 50% more valuable than Kyle Tucker for -0.2 fWAR?
  24. So Paredes was only worth -0.2 fWAR to a very intelligent team and that set the market. And in your mind that means he's worth a top 5 bat in baseball? Make it make sense. Is he good or not?
  25. The Astros have had all the time in the world with him to get an extension done and they have been pretty good about extending their star players. Tucker has been holding out for FA. Doesn't matter how much time you have with him to get an extension in place, that means nothing in the trade at hand. You are trading 3 years of control of a 3-4 WAR player for 1 year of control of a 5 WAR player. Straight up? Can take that and shove it up your ass. The Cubs have enough prospects that they dont have to include Paredes in a trade for Tucker. Why the hell would they include him? What I proposed is in line with what the Yankees gave up for 1 year of Juan Soto. The difference being I proposed giving up a better prospect to compensate for the lack of MLB return involved.
