    I wonder if the hand injury last year is the culprit?

    Command is definitely an issue. I think he also we has an issue where he throws 3 pitches (4 seam, sinker, change) at similar speeds with similar movement profiles (per BB Savant). There's not enough difference so hitters can sit on the speed/movement. And his command isn't good enough to increase his use of breaking balls earlier in the count.

    I wonder if the blister puts him back on the IL. It didn't sound that serious though. At least the other SP's get an extra day off rest I guess. Important in the summer heat I'd wager. Guys like Palencia, Milner sound close to returning. Some decisions may have to be made. Would be a shame to cut anyone.

    I feel bad for Assad. He just keeps doing his job on the mound and gets sent down because he has options. If I were the Cubs I'd give the guy a nice bonus after the season as a thank you.

    Rea has done his job this year, but I just wouldn't bring him back at 36 years old and risk him turning into Taillon. Any kind of decline on Rea and he becomes a pumpkin. Id rather just sign someone like him who is 2-3 years younger. I would probably bring back Boyd on a QO. It will be interesting to see how many SP Jed goes with to start 2027. Assad is also the only guy we'll have going into the offseason who is anywhere near reliable health-wise.

    Holmes, Seiya. a few more SP, a platoon OF, and your typical crop of relievers would be my offseason wishlist. Another catcher too to compete with Ayers if they plan on giving him a shot. Ideally I'm out on Boyd. He'll be 36 next year. I'd prefer to pass on Shota too if there's better SP available, but we might not have many better choices.

    You forgot Braxton Garrett. They're losing 5 good SP, which is their entire current rotation. That's nuts. IMO they have to replace about 4 of the 5, plus grab a cheap depth guy or 2 to replace/upgrade Rea, That's going to cost a lot of money, and fortunately we have a lot coming off the books. I would consider anything we get from Steele and Horton as a bonus and make plans assuming both may not pitch at all.

    I see Shaw as more of a supersub type than Ramirez. He's a better fielder and athlete than Ramirez so with both on the roster I think CC will be more likely to move Shaw around the INF and OF than Ramirez. Ramirez has the switch hitting and overall hitting similarities to Zobrist though and similar positions so I get the comparison, he's more 1:1 to Zobrist than Shaw. And maybe Ramirez ends up being a solid fielder so they don't have issues moving him around even with Shaw on the roster. It's nice to have both on the team.

    Very much makes sense. I assume Shaw and Ramirez will be out there a lot next year, with Alcantara in the mix. Ramirez will probably DH a bunch too. Shaw can fill in for days off on the INF and will backup for injuries Even if they resign Seiya or Happ I figure they sign a Conforto type again this winter. By 2028 they should have Shaw, Ramirez,, Conrad, Kepley, and Alcantara to play corner OF/DH plus extras as bench depth.

    I can't think of anything he doesn't do well on the baseball field.

    I guarantee there's like 14 statheads in the FO telling CC those stats every 5 days.

    Shaw has T-Rex arms and can barely throw the ball across an infield, so i say LF.

    If they never got close on Soriano or Detmers that tells me they just didn't match up on a deal. The Angels probably just didn't like our prospects as much as the Cubs do so the ask was too high for Jed. It took Ballesteros to get a good reliever from them. Getting Detmers or Soriano would have obviously been much higher. We don't even have any premier prospects, they might have wanted Shaw or Ramirez, maybe Brown etc. If we're in win-now mode we need all those guys this year. Plus they may not have liked Shaw's current injury situation. Anyways, I'm confident Jed got the best deals he could. He's a good POBO.

    After the TDL passed Jed said he tried to get a controllable SP but never got anywhere close on any of those deals.

    Civale threw 45 pitches on Thurs, Not sure about Assad. Zeferjahn was the most rested reliever.

    Zeferjahn has yet to give up a walk in his 3 appearances with us so far. A good sign.

    Next year so far it's Cabrera, Steele, Garrett.(edit: and Brown too). Assad as depth. Wiggins hopefully healthy and in the wings. That's a good start. About 60m in money freed up from Shota, Taillon, Boyd, and Rea to grab more. That should buy at least 3 good arms. Could also add a cheaper controllable SP in trade.
