  1. If you believe this than you are either saying Cohen lied to Verlander and Scherzer or they lied to the media about what was said. It was clearly stated he was going to step back a year or two. They paid a lot of money to get higher end prospects that could be easy in a year or two. I don’t see how they then give Ohtani $50M+ a year on top of what they are still paying those other pitchers, and be well over $300M in payroll, to not compete in 24’. I think they are not in on Ohtani. However you might be right. Ohtani may have already given them the impression he doesn’t want to play in NY. He wouldn’t ever say that exact thing. That wouldn’t be smart. But maybe there is a strong suspicion he would rather not be there. So Cohen decided to kick the can down the road a little.
  2. He has been very good. I know a lot of PSD people didn’t like him and will point out that his career numbers will suggest he will crash and burn. He came up often on PSD. But to me, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Keep sending him out there. Maybe he is the 2023 version of Rafael Ortega and will have one good year in his career. It does happen and he has been very good.
  3. If a lefty is going they can go with either Wisdom or Amaya at DH, if they don’t want to go with Morel. none are particularly great options against lefties.
  4. What’s is they really lose? Who cares. They tried to win. Maybe they will, probably they won’t. But they had to try. What is the infatuation with obtaining prospects? They didn’t really lose much for the future and they gave themselves a chance this year. Good! That is what they should have done even if it doesn’t work.
  5. And even if the Cubs have the best offer (if no one beats the Caissie/Wicks idea) the Mets don’t have to deal him. I don’t see anything here unless Alcantara or better headline it and a better second piece. Maybe a 3rd piece as well.
  6. No they are not. They are hitting rockets. All over 100mph.
  7. Honestly don’t see this as an upgrade worth losing a top 20 organizational prospect. Maybe Madrigal for Candelario would be ok. Nats get a controlled guy for a few years. Cubs don’t really lose much. For this year it helps a little. For 24’ they probably get rid of a guy who might not have a any place on the roster anyway.
  8. Nope. They can’t sell now. Even if it doesn’t work out this season, the eight move is at the very least, not to sell. No regrets.
  9. That is not going in aggressively. Again, I understand people thinking like they do. I just think Ohtani is different. I think they will go the years for him. He still might go elsewhere. But I think the cubs will bid to an uncomfortable level for them.
  10. I totally understand people being skeptical of reports the Cubs will go aggressive after Ohtani. They have not shown they would even dish out that sort of contract. However, if you believe Ricketts runs the team like a business and profit is the only thing he care about, signing Ohtani makes a lot of sense. Much more than any FA they haven’t gone after. Had they paid Turner does that bring in money? Nope. Same with Boegarts or Correa. But Ohtani brings bushel baskets of money. Between jerseys, tickets, and marketing he is a cash cow. He is the single best signing a guy motivated by money alone should make. While I still think it less likely they sign him that more likely, I do think they will be very aggressive. Just follow the money.
  11. If a closer was the final piece to a team who is definitely in the playoffs then you give up more, IMO. So if the Braves wanted Bednar they might be willing to overpay. Or the Cubs in 16’ when they overpaid for Chapman. Teams who “might” make the playoffs shouldn’t do it. I think that is the point regarding “not at this time”.
  12. Alcantara is 21 and at least 2 full years away. If/when he is ready the Cubs will have a spot for him. I wouldn’t worry about Suzucki or Happ blocking him. I’m not saying I wouldn’t consider dealing him for a guy that can help the cubs now and a few years after this one. But I wouldn’t deal him because they won’t have a spot for him. If he is good, they will have a spot.
  13. Not for a closer, for me. I would rather see someone like. Cease of Keller. I want a rotation piece if they are going to dip into higher end prospects.
  14. I’m with JD on this one. You can’t trade Horton for Bednar. Not for a relief pitcher. Maybe Cease, maybe Alonso, definitely Soto, but not a reliever.
  15. I think that is probably what they will do. Unless they lose 2 and are 5.5 back I don’t see them selling. But I also doubt they go big. If they do, I hope it is for a controlled guy, not a rental. And I seriously doubt they would give up a lot for a rental. Most likely scenario at this very moment is small but, IMO.
  16. He has actually been doing much better against lefties. And he is better against lefties than Morel. Guess they just want to give him a day.
  17. We are all messed up 1908. Must be jet lag to the new site. Today is the 30th, but you are right they have 2 games before having to decide. I corrected myself later. Other that that, I completely agree with you.
  18. You don’t know how what is going to work? Not selling? For now it helps them have a chance to win this year. IIsn’t that why they play the game? To win. The players, anyway. They can’t always keep building the system to one day try. They have to actually try when they can win. And right now, they can win. In 2 days it might be different.
  19. Oops, my bad. The deadline is after I Monday’s game. Deadline is Tuesday. So to your point, if they do drop 2 and are 5.5 back, maybe the plan does change. For now they aren’t selling.
  20. Isn’t the deadline prior to the Cubs game against the reds? I thought it was. So they have just today to decide. If it is after the game and if the cubs drop 2 straight and the brewers and reds win 2 straight, maybe it does chance. But if the deadline is before that gane I do t see how they sell.
  21. Yep, I am not buying high end rentals and giving away top prospects. They are not that good, to do that. However, if Cease or Alonso or someone like that becomes available I would be fine with giving up some solid prospects to have those guys beyond this year. The one think they can’t do is sell, IMO. Not now. I guess they can get creative if they are not sure about Stroman. Maybe move him but the. Trade for a different pitcher like a Cease or Keller. That gives them a rotation piece beyond this year and a guy to take Stroman’s spot the rest of this year. But that is a lot of moving parts.
  22. So if I am understanding what you are saying you want to sell. So get rid of Stroman, Bellinger, Gomes and some lesser guys because they are not signed next year. You want to sell when they are 3 1/2 games out of first, and 3 out of the wild card. Basically you want the white Sox white flag trades of years ago all over again. Is this correct? I competely disagree. This is a flawed team. I get that. But they are chasing other flawed teams. They have a decent chance at making the playoffs. You don’t sell now.
  23. That is fair. But my point is if they do sell and get prospects I would much rather they use their minor league assets for proven talent. I would be much more excited about imeocinf the system if they used the system to bring in actual major league talent. Hopefully they do. But I don’t think they will sell.
  24. If they sold for high end prospects and then used some of that minor league talent as assets to made deals next year for proven talent I would be more open to selling. But they don’t seem to do that. They seem to hold into all prospects. It is time to win. If not now and they sell, then definitely next year. By signing guys, bringing high end guys up and dealing other assets for proven talent.
