    Both are too much. That is giving SD more for one year of Cease than they gave the WS for two years of his control. Wicks, Canario and one of either Triantos or Alcantara is actually too steep too, but maybe that needs to happen for a deal. Definitely not both. And no way the Cubs should add Neown for Suarez. Maybe Pearson, but not Brown.

    Thats true. But right now they won’t take Assad, Wicks and a pen arm for Cease, with or without Suarez. and if they never get real with what they can get for Cease I am fine with the Cubs moving to signing Robertson and a couple bench bats

    No, but this isn’t even possible anyway. Cubs aren’t spending that. Suarez is not a value.

    I get that. But I don’t think the Padres FO will agree with that. As I said, coming from our POV I completely agree with you. But I would be shocked if the Cubs got him without losing a top 100 prospect and a pitcher to replace Cease and probably another piece. And if the Cubs view Suarez as negative value then padres won’t add him.

    I think if the Cubs don’t go over the LT this year, it is before the 3rd rd but after all the comp A and B picks. So somewhere around 80th. And if they go over it may be after rd 3.

    Is the pick that high? I didn’t think a large market team got a pick after round 1 for losing a FA. Still not worth Shaw.

    That might be the right valuation, but I would bet it will take more. Maybe Cassie, Assad and a pen arm, not named Hodge for Cease and Suarez. Maybe a 4th small piece is added as well.

    If SD absolutely has to have Shaw the conversation should be over. Anyone else in the system is fair game. Plus add Assad, Brown or Wicks and another younger prospect. If that doesn’t get it done, move on. Sign Robertson and improve the bench.

    With the latest moves the Cubs have made, does anyone have an idea of what the Cubs payroll is now for LT purposes. Also, what is the actual number they are putting out? I have heard all kinds of numbers of what the Cubs could spend comfortably. From as low as $13M to as high as $33M. I do expect them to come in around $230M-$233M for LT purposes. If that is what I expect, how much money would they have to sign guys? Can do trade for Cease and sign Robertson?

    Why not one stop shopping and get Suarez too. If Jed finished out the off season with Cease and either Suarez or Robertson, that would make for one heck of an off season. And they would be clear favorites in the division. With Steele, Cease and Imanaga as their top 3 pitchers they can also win any playoff series they are in.

    Got it. Makes sense. However signing someone like Bregman or Flaherty for a few years with opt outs doesn’t really play much into what happens at the end of 2026. AND the Cubs main players are up for FA after that season already. Basically whatever else the Cubs spend this season has no bearing on their commitment during the lock out, unless someone really thinks the Cubs are going to now sign someone for 3 or more years. I don’t, and I do not see anyone suggesting that. I don’t think anything they do or don’t do now has anything to do with a potential work stoppage after the ‘26 season. I also do not agree that this will be a reason not to sign Tucker long term. No matter how or when they come to an agreement, he will be worth his contract. I think teams will be more leery of the mid level to good players, not the stars. But who knows🤷

    I’m not disagreeing with you but what does it matter what the teams salary is in the event of a work stoppage? Why would that add to Ricketts wanting to keep payroll low? Honest question. Granted, he wants to keep payroll low because he is a greedy, short sided, money hungry owner who doesn’t care about the fan base. Basically the average owner of 90% of all sports teams, as well as a typical billionaire.

    Yes, because they wanted the money to sign Bregman. If then sending $5.5M in the deal brought the Cubs into the Bregman conversation that would be an awful look for the GM. The purpose of then trading Pressley was to have the money for Bregman.

    That said (often😬) I agree with you. I think it is another hypothetical. Makes no sense for the Astros to lose Bregman to then Cubs because the Cubs sign him with money the Astros gave them in the trade. Just think if Jed did that. What would the narrative been here? I can’t imagine the Astros GM would do something so stupid.

    Well if he is hurt I doubt they can trade him. I just don’t think he is traded.

    Maybe, but does it matter anymore. If the Cubs have over $20M to spend and only 1 pen arm and a bench bat if Robertson cost $11M they still have $9M+ for a bench bat. Canha shouldnt cost that. I know they can’t just throw money around, but I don’t think they should lose him for $1M. If they want him they should get him. Even if they wanted King and got him in a trade they would have a few million for a bench bat or just go with what they have.

    Yes. This is the answer for me as well. They can probably even sign a bench bat with the $5M to $8M they would still probably have available.

    But if the Cubs did get Bregman I would imagine Nico would be traded to get some salary relief. So even if a 3 team deal could be worked out I don’t see how they take on Cease, who cost more than Nico, or King who isn’t much of a savings. I can see Nico for Woo or Miller as a better move for the Cubs.. really don’t want Tucker, Bregman and SD pitcher all as free agents next year and no Nico either. Problem is the Mariners want to cut salary too, so a third team has to get involved here as well. And no idea how that happens. I honestly can’t see how Bregman comes here and the Cubs trade Nico.

    Nope. Then you have 3 guys who will walk next year without an extension AND no Nico. If they can’t get Bregman and keep Nico or at least trade him for a guy with 3 more years of control I don’t want Bregman. I honestly doubt there is anything to the Cubs getting him anyway. How much would the Astros have had to mess up this Pressley deal for that to happen. Do you really think they gave the Cubs $5.5M and because of that the Cubs outbid them for Bergman’s services. The GM should be fired if that happened. I think Bregman is using the Cubs as leverage but there is nothing there.

    If you like him as a middle relief pitcher it is a solid deal. Personally I didn’t want him. Robertson is my first choice. They can afford him. I like Finnegan, Estevez and Chafin all better than Stanek, as well.

    Except I think SD reeally wants to move Suarez more than King or Cease. I think Suarez is basically a throw in with one of those guys. I think he option on his contract makes his contract makes him more of a liability than an asset. I don’t see Robertson and Suarez added, unless the Cubs move either Merryweather or Pearson in that deal.

    This would be my order as well. The only deviation from this would be my skimping would be in the second bat, not Stanek instead of Robertson. Just not a fan of Stanek. If the relief pitcher got skimped on I might rather have Chafin. That would be my skimp on Robertson.
