    This is where I am with him. And if it was them babying him a little, that is understandable. Maybe he wasn’t full on ready, and they had an amazing one. I would think the bubble wrap should be off him this year. Sure, he might not make 30 starts. But he might. No reason to assume 100 innings is his best possible outcome.

    Well in 23 he had TJS which ended his season at 71 innings. Then he didn’t come back for 14 months or so, limiting his ‘24 innings to 39 plus playoffs. Before the surgery, in ‘22 he had arm issues. If the TJS is a success, as many are these days, that would mean his arm should be fine. So why would 100 innings be his best possible outcome. It may be the eventual outcome. I am not arguing that. It is the hyperbole suggesting that is the best they can hope for, that I disagree with. I would guess the Cubs would expect a bit more. He isn’t a kid. So if he is injury free he will make his starts. And since his arm is now surgically repaired there is reason to believe he may not get insured this year.

    You say you get it, but then go right back to making a statement as if it is fact, when it is actually just your opinion. If Boyd is healthy why is 100 innings the BEST they can hope for? When he came back last year he had 8 starts and then the playoffs. He wasn’t skipped or he didn’t miss a start. Why can’t he start 30 games this year? He isn’t a kid. He doesn’t need to be coddled. He may only throw 100 innings. That might happen. But that’s not the best they can hope for. They can hope for 30 starts and 160 innings. It might be more likely he throws closer to 100 innings than 160. But that is not the best they can hope for.

    I also have to think something is not exactly right with Flaherty. 29 teams did not offer him better than this deal. iMO that has to mean his medicals are scary. Remember the Orioles backed out of a deal last year. How do so many pitchers get much higher than their projected salary and he get so little? Something scared away.

    And if they spent substantial money on the pen and rotation I would be fine with a weaker bench. You are probably right, they won’t add to the bench. It just sucks that I also doubt they add $25M worth of arms. Ricketts is just going to pocket the money he saved trading Bellinger.

    I don’t think they have enough to get Robertson if they signed Flaherty. Might have to aim lower for the pen arm. Maybe Chandon or Brasier. But wouldn’t mind Flaherty on a short deal.

    You might be right that they don’t sign another bench bat. But how is this team set with position players? You think a bench of Kelly, Berti, and what other 2 guys they have on the roster of below average players is a good bench? I don’t. I know it won’t be used much, but they have money to improve it. So not doing so is choosing to pocket the money they saved on trading Bellinger instead of improving the team. If they used the money so they can afford Cease and Robertson, or if they signed Flaherty or Bregman with that money, I could understand not upgrading the bench. But assuming that doesn’t happen, I sure hope they improve the bench. As I say earlier, sucks they use the LT line as a cap. Sucks even worse not to at least come close to it to improve the team. They don’t need $20M at the deadline. While I agree with you that if they had that extra they should spend it then, I doubt they will. Plus, spending it now gives them a better chance to even consider adding at the deadline. And having $8M to spend should be plenty.

    I agree. No chance Shaw is moved. Let someone else get Cease or Peller needs to lower his demands.

    The problem with the idea of if they get Bregman they then trade Shaw for Cease is twofold. First, under no circumstances would I want the Cubs to trade Shaw for a rental pitcher. So that would be a non starter. And then, if they did sign Bregman they don’t have the budget to trade for Cease. As you said, highly unlikely. I think if they signed Bregman they would trade Hoerner and let Shaw and Berti man second. Maybe they then sign Roberson. Hoerner would bring back a prospect. And I highly doubt this as well.

    If the Cubs are going to spend $25M more before the start of the season, to me the most likely way that happens is they sign Canha, Moncada and Robertson. Honestly, that would make for a good off season. They could use a better pitcher in the rotation, but it seems the FO likes Rea. I realize there are other options like Cease or King but I don’t think that happens. Flaherty is out there and can be had short term, too. But I really haven’t heard much about the Cubs and him. To me, Bregman is doubtful. I think the Cubs talk is all about leverage for him with some other team. I am fine with Jed hanging around in there talks as long as he still gives himself options once they realize a trade isn’t going to work. I also think those “most likely” moves would make the Cubs a clear favorite in the division. If they aren’t going to $25M, leave one of those bats out of the final roster. But if they don’t go that far, it is apparent all TR wanted to do with the Bellinger trade and getting money from the Astros in the Pressley trade was to grow his bank account. Which sucks. I hate that their made up line is the LT line. But if it is, at least get to that!

    I tend to agree that the Cubs possibly signing him is exaggerated.

    Is there even a remote possibility Jed does offer Bregman a 5 year deal with deferred money attached? I mean we all assune(with good reason) that Jed won’t do it, but he did sign Swanson for 7 years. What if he gave in $135M for 5 years but with deferring some money it only ended up costing him $19M to $20M for LT purposes? Cubs would still have a little money for a bench bat or maybe Chafin in the pen. My guess is ,NO, it isn’t possible. But who knows.🤷

    Both are too much. That is giving SD more for one year of Cease than they gave the WS for two years of his control. Wicks, Canario and one of either Triantos or Alcantara is actually too steep too, but maybe that needs to happen for a deal. Definitely not both. And no way the Cubs should add Neown for Suarez. Maybe Pearson, but not Brown.

    Thats true. But right now they won’t take Assad, Wicks and a pen arm for Cease, with or without Suarez. and if they never get real with what they can get for Cease I am fine with the Cubs moving to signing Robertson and a couple bench bats

    No, but this isn’t even possible anyway. Cubs aren’t spending that. Suarez is not a value.

    I get that. But I don’t think the Padres FO will agree with that. As I said, coming from our POV I completely agree with you. But I would be shocked if the Cubs got him without losing a top 100 prospect and a pitcher to replace Cease and probably another piece. And if the Cubs view Suarez as negative value then padres won’t add him.

    I think if the Cubs don’t go over the LT this year, it is before the 3rd rd but after all the comp A and B picks. So somewhere around 80th. And if they go over it may be after rd 3.

    Is the pick that high? I didn’t think a large market team got a pick after round 1 for losing a FA. Still not worth Shaw.

    That might be the right valuation, but I would bet it will take more. Maybe Cassie, Assad and a pen arm, not named Hodge for Cease and Suarez. Maybe a 4th small piece is added as well.

    If SD absolutely has to have Shaw the conversation should be over. Anyone else in the system is fair game. Plus add Assad, Brown or Wicks and another younger prospect. If that doesn’t get it done, move on. Sign Robertson and improve the bench.
