    i am always thinking about this too, which i agree is dumb. .500 isn't some magic cruise control number we can just set and not worry about, but i'm always excited when .500 the rest of the way is a decent result.

    this is fast, isn't it? seems like an obvious "don't want to lose my job to the rookie i'll rush back and oops i'm way more injured now" situation.

    utley was v good as recently as last year and his (terrible) numbers this year are probably representative of at least some bad luck, but he's basically stopped hitting the ball hard and his line drives are way down. as long as you make sure his option doesn't vest, he'd be fine as a vetty vet bench guy if you think herrera's lousy hitting is bringing the team down but utley's lousy hitting will inspire us to success, i guess. that said, if we are as cash-strapped as davell says, we'd better not spend a dime on this fool. make tom put the $5MM in a 4-month cd and make it rain with .02% interest.

    the super optimistic scenario is that we get to desperately try to outspend the dodgers for an a-ball outfielder. yippee.

    gotta be disappointing for schwarber that theo couldn't get him any help. dan haren sucks and is an improvement over beeler/richard in that he mostly deserves to be in the major leagues. hunter is a guy. really, really hope we don't regret not trying. every opportunity to win is sacred.
