  1. i dont know what this soap drop business is, but don't act so surprised
  2. if you're planning on being on the board much, you should probably just put that in your sig for the next 20 hours or so
  3. oops i shut off my tv and now im leaving
  4. Oh, OK. I guess I was just trying to think objectively about sample size and injury. Bottom line is Mulder doesn't "suck" if Ankiel can catch a simple fly ball. i hope you work for the cardinals and they agree with you and continue to run him out there
  5. wow, i thought the game started at 7 tonight wtg cubs
  6. is marshall even on the team anymore? why are we thinking he's going to be worth anything when we ask him to make a start after not pitching for 2 weeks? does this make sense to anyone?
  7. how do those numbers compare to other balls put in play on later pitches? Eliminating strike outs is always going to boost a hitters stats. you can look it up yourself (i'm too lazy to post it all here) but you'll find that putting the ball in play on an 0-0 count is basically in the middle. good counts like 3-1 and 2-0 present better results and 0-2 and 1-2 present worse results. it's basically what you'd expect. in the end, it really seems as though mlb hitters know what they're doing; if they swing at the first pitch, they're likely doing so for a good reason.
  8. Roast, if you go to Wrigley and someone offers you a free ticket, don't get into his van. The game is in Pittsburgh. hahahahah
  9. it's true that the divorce rates are higher for those who cohabitate before marriage, but this is almost certainly due to the fact that the people are more likely to cohabitate (people with financial issues, for example) are more likely to divorce anyway, regardless of cohabitation.
  10. the cardinal fans are being kind of lame, stop it you can defend him or whatever, but let's not pretend he got a legit prescription for this stuff. that's ridiculous.
  11. WHEN PUTTING THE FIRST PITCH IN PLAY derosa .352/.351/.481 lee. 367/.367/.600 aramis .348/.338/.565
  12. one year joe carter hit 232/290/391 and had 115 rbi im willing to bet he was overrated that year. well, i'm sure he was overrated lots of years, but especially that one.
  13. 1.84 ERA in wins. 7.39 in losses. so what do we make of all this? i say that this shows that qs is a reasonable proxy for how well a pitcher has done, but then so is wins and losses. both qs and w-l will usually get the general picture right, but will also have some major blind spots, with w-l's blind spots likely being more significant. in the end, there's probably not much reason to use either stat since we have access to much better metrics. anyone else have an alternative analysis? I agree - esp with your last sentence about having better metrics to use. viewtopic.php?t=43886 you were too fast for me
  14. there's been some discussion about the value of the quality start. bruce miles, fred, and ssr have been kind enough to come up with some numbers on various things. we were discussing this in the game thread, but i'm moving it here since everyone is crazy there. 1.84 ERA in wins. 7.39 in losses. so what do we make of all this? i say that this shows that quality starts is a reasonable proxy for how well a pitcher has done, but then so is wins and losses. both qs and w-l will usually get the general picture right, but will also have some major blind spots, with w-l's blind spots likely being more significant. in the end, there's probably not much reason to use either stat since we have access to much better metrics. anyone else have an alternative analysis?
  15. im starting a thread about this nevermind
  16. That one will take some doing..... let me put that on the back burner for the time being. i suspected it might. if it's too much work, absolutely don't worry about it. i was just curious as to how it would compare to qs. Not exactly what you were asking, but I did come up with this....... ERA losses wins Starters 6.33 2.47 Relievers 5.35 1.79 Overall 5.95 2.28 this is kind of what i was figuring it would be. i'll bet it's even more striking with actual wins and losses. this needs to be its own thread (especially if you or ryan devote a lot of time to coming up with more numbers), there's no way there will be a reasonable conversation about this in here.

  18. Let the congregation say AMEN !! do you have any numbers on cubs starters era's for when they get a W versus when they get a ND versus when they get an L?
  19. i think brenly is making stuff up again
  20. wasn't it a line drive over the first baseman while stepping into the box?
  21. wowowowow sam fuld was my favorite player when he was with the chiefs i say we start him in cf for two weeks just to see how things work out. if it goes badly, we can go back to someone else after that.
