this was literally my first thought when i saw the contract details. i understand that this is what you have to pay to keep a guy like smith around; i do not understand why you'd rather do that than grab bridgewater at the end of the first round and give him a year to ease in. -

he's not trash. let's not get carried away. he adjusted and did really well in A+ for a while before his callup while being one of the youngest guys in that league. now he's even younger for his level and has had some struggles but is showing signs of life. he just seems like trash because everything else we have is amazing. yes that is exactly what we will tell the marlins while swinging the pocket watch in front of their eyes

this was honestly my thought as well. i kind of expect the marlins to demand twenty percent of a team's farm system for stanton and end up taking lesser guys when we're unwilling to trade from the very top.
