  1. That's easy: Juan Cruz. He had good numbers as a starter, then Dusty put him in the bullpen where he sucked, and unfortunately the reliever label has stuck to him. Cruz' career could have taken a whole different trajectory if Dusty had displayed as much patience with him as a starter as was given to Shawn Estes.
  2. One SS has a long skinny neck, the other has no neck. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_430592.jpghttp://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_120413.jpg
  3. So we have the SS with the skinniest head in MLB and the SS with the fattest head. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_430592.jpghttp://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_120413.jpg
  4. It looked cool when Claude Raines did it. I think the moustache completes the look. http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Park/6771/Images/cr242.jpg
  5. Is it a trend? I'm pretty far behind the curve on fashion, so I wouldn't know.
  6. I just heard on XM that Cox is probably going to keep Brian Jordan on the roster over some younger guy that hit over 400 in st (forgot his name). Because he looks at his bench and doesn't see any veterans there. He must have a veteran fetish? Or maybe he's going by Jordan's MLB track record and not some stats compiled over 20 st games.
  7. There is precedence for that. Last year when Neifi was in an extended and atrocious slump Dusty excused it by saying Neifi was unlucky. He did the same thing with Estes, and we never heard Dusty put any pressure on Hollandsworth. Holla actually got 2 chances to play himself out of a job he never should have had in the first place.
  8. The impact of middle relief is vastly overrated by some here and the concept of opportunity cost is largely ignored. Pitching is about 35% of the game and relief pitching overall is about 30% of that 35%. You don't win a pennant on the strength of middle relief. $3 million middle relievers are expensive toys that cause you to have trash like Jacque Jones in right field for 3 years. Also, Eyre and Howry have never been anything special until last year, and they're into their 30's now.
  9. Anyone noticed Neifi's spring at bats total? It's the 2nd most on the team at 58, and only 2 less than Pierre's.
  10. This trade might provoke Hendry into doing something stupid like giving Pierre a huge deal, which is NOT what I want. We're already stuck with one overrated overpaid OF for the next 3 years.
  11. Just what I needed: another reason to hate the Jones contract.
  12. Notch. As in, "he takes it up a notch for big games". We need a number that measures the size of a pitcher's notch.
  13. Cubs suck, but Downey overstates his case. Regardless of what the Pirates do I still want a rapid fall from contention and a mid-season fire sale.
  14. ' I am just curious - why do you think that is? I mean, he has been with several teams (http://www.baseballreference.com/h/harrile01.shtml) so does that mean every GM that signed him is incompetent? An MLB GM can subscribe to a few lame outdated old school ideas and still not be completely incompetent. The Chicago Cubs have a GM like that. It only takes one to ensure that a Lenny Harris always has a job.
  15. 212 pinch hits, and it only took 18 years. That's a whopping 11.77 pinch hits per season for a light-hitting defensive hack who was never good enough to start. I can really see why MLB always had a roster spot for this guy for the last 18 years.
  16. Kinda ironic to hear Hendry bitching about one signing inflating a market when he himself grossly inflated the relief market with the Eyre contract. It's even more ironic that something as silly as "the leadoff-hitter market" actually exists in the minds of people with check-writing power.
  17. Gotta love Hendry's quote about "the leadoff-hitter market". It reflects a paleolithic concept that leadoff hitters are a distinct species of ballplayer and not just someone who doesn't make a lot of outs and doesn't clog the basepaths, as us modern folks believe.
  18. Restovich could still be a viable RH threat. Jones everyday does not suck anymore than Jones/Grissom everyday. Marquis sucks, but he could have made the team if he didn't retire. We should be happy he retired. What I meant was I'm bummed Grissom couldn't reproduce his recent success against LHP and threaten Jones' everyday status. Obviously in light of his severely diminished skills there's no reason to be sad about his retirement.
  19. I don't think this is any cause for joy. Grissom was our only guy who had a realistic shot at making Dusty consider a platoon in RF. Now Jones is secure in an everyday role, which sucks. Pagan won't be any threat to Jones.
  20. Makes sense. If he couldn't make a Dusty Baker team it was time to quit. Too bad. I was really hoping he would hit lefties well enough to make Dusty consider a platoon in RF. Looks like Jacque can breathe a sigh of relief.
  21. Probably no Prior and Wood for April, so if Lee starts slow things could get ugly real fast.
  22. It's kinda sickening to think of how high Williams' and Hill's trade values were not too long ago. Now they're looking like the tech stock you should have sold in 1999.
  23. Makes complete sense. I wonder if he has the inside scoop? http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/rozner.asp?id=171648 I haven't watched any games yet. How does Williams look physically? Did he lose any weight in the offseason?
  24. Dammit. There goes the all-French outfield.
