  1. If Murton only plays vs. lefties then yes, he will be wasted.
  2. Yeah. I just don't see what is so fantastic about Burnitz that he has to play every day. He hardly ever even gets a day off. As for Holla, we are going through a rare stretch when we are predominantly facing lefties, so Murton should be playing. There will be many more stretches when we face nothing but righties, but I doubt Dusty will bend over backwards to accommodate Murton in those situations.
  3. Quite you, this board is no place for talk like this. Seriously, the hypocrisy on this board is amazing. People complain Dusty refuses to play rookies over veterans just because they are rookies. The very same posters will start whining to play the rookies for no other reason than they are rookies. It's a never ending circle, "insert name of the the flavor of the month rookie can't be any worse than insert name of middle of the road veteran and Dusty refuses to play them." Then when the rookie (Dubois, Hill, Cruz, whomever) proves he isn't any better, it's on to the next fad. Very insulting and stupid post, made even stupider by the fact that the Cubs were just swept by a red hot Braves team with 10 rookies on its roster.
  4. I think the two are similiar in a lot of ways than what people want to believe. If Hendry really had intentions of Dubois playing everyday vs. just platooning he wouldn't have signed Hollandsworth and Burnitz. If he really wanted Cedeno to be on the team, he wouldn't have signed Macias and Perez. Now you can say that Hendry, unlike Baker, is more willing to correct initial mistakes, but I don't think they are total opposites when it comes to player development. I really doubt Hendry envisioned Dubois starting only vs. lefties, as Dusty did. Hendry touted Dubois as a potential Rookie of the Year, which would be an impossible goal for a rookie who doesn't face righties.
  5. I don't recall seeing any comments like this during Dubois's stint as starting LF, or during Patterson's slide. That could be because both of those two's slides were chop-full of strikeouts. Tough to hit those hard and right at someone. Dusty repeatedly used the "hard luck" argument for keeping Shawn Estes in the rotation when everyone was clamoring for Estes' removal. This is the same situation, since Dusty surely knows that pressure is mounting to give Cedeno a chance.
  6. Looking at Neifi's career stats, I now realize he may be the unluckiest hitter in the history of baseball.
  7. 17-117 since June 6th and it's all bad luck. Those of us who hoped to see Cedeno get more time will have to wait. http://www.suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-kiley09.html
  8. What I really like about Cox and Shuerholz is that they seem to have a unified plan. They work as a team. For example, when Shuerholz calls up a prized prospect you see Cox actually let the kid start evey day. Then there's Baker and Hendry, who seem to have separate agendas sometimes. Hendry will call up a prized prospect and then Baker lets him rot in a lefty-only platoon. Or trading for Hairston, then finding out Dusty doesn't even want Hairston. Or talking up Dubois as a potential rookie of the year when Baker had already planned to give the starting LF job to Hollandsworth. It makes me wonder if Baker and Hendry even communicate.
  9. The Marlins have a lefty on the mound. If that were not the case I doubt you'd see either Murton or Cedeno.
  10. Murton only bats right-handed, so he will only face lefty pitchers. That is a wasted callup. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Cubs will not develop a righty-hitting position prospect under Dusty Baker. Trade him now.
  11. As much as I hate the players on this team, I still think we can win the wild-card, especially if we get some players. But if Lee has to be out of the lineup, just what is a good lineup with these make believe players we have (outside of Walker and Ramirez)? Agreed, without Lee and Nomar the offense is just plain bad. I'd still like to see other people besides Neifi and Macias at the top of the lineup.
  12. The Marlins are about to move to 4 games ahead of us in the WC race, 4.5 if we lose. Dodgers up 5-2 over the Rockies after 5, and they'll have us tied if they win and pass us if we lose again. The Braves will be 8 in front of us if they win. We really need a win in the worst way.
  13. I was thinking I'd like to see Holla at 1B, Walker at 2B, and Cedeno at SS. That way Neifi stays out of the game.
  14. Facing lefties is when we miss Lee really bad. If he were around Walker would be at 2B and Neifi would be on the bench.
  15. The really annoying thing about double headers is that so many of them end in splits. A split is useless when you're chasing teams.
  16. Agreed. Forget the Cardinals. The Braves should be the only thing the Cubs worry about. The Cards have a bunch of games remaining against NL wild card contenders and I hope the Cards win every one of them. The only 14 games I want them to lose are the ones against the Cubs.
  17. The Cards sit at 54-30 now. They have 78 games left, and if they win only half of them they will end up 93-69 on the season. The Cubs, who are at 40-42 now and have 80 games left, would have to go 53-27 in their remaining games to make it to 93-69. And does anyone see the Cards playing .500 ball from here on out? I don't. I consider these next 2 Braves games far more important than the 14 with the Cards.
  18. I would say, if you think keeping Dusty Baker is the answer, you're twice as delusional. Replacing Dusty is one of many answers. He's the wrong manager for the wrong team. I said it before he was hired and I haven't seen anything resembling evidence to the contrary. Let's see here, the team hits .213 with men on 3rd and less than 2 outs, yep it's the manager. This is becoming silly. The fact that you have to dig that deeply to find a number to exonerate Dusty actually makes him look worse, not better. And I assume you are aware that a fly ball scores a run with a man on 3rd and less than 2 outs, so BA is a pretty poor indicator of offensive effectiveness in that situation, particulary for a team that has a lot of fly ball hitters.
  19. Severe Tornado warning??? I've never heard of that. I thought there were only Severe thunderstorm watch, severe thunderstorm warning, and then tornado watches and warnings..... huh. Tornados are kinda severe by their very nature. I've never heard of a mild tornado.
  20. But it's not justy Dusty. A lot of managers do that with their young lefties. If these guys are supposed to be a key part of the future, they have to learn to hit lefties too. Might as well start now and give them some practice. I don't think it's so bad to call up a lefty-hitting rookie to hit against righty pitchers, because there are so many righties. What irks me is calling up rookies to play exclusively against left-handed pitching, simply because starting LHP's are scarce. There's far too much downtime involved and the best-case scenario is that you end up with a hitter who is only competent against a small segment of MLB pitching. It's stupid. IMO if you're not going to let rookies face righties then they're better off in the minors.
  21. We do have a stretch of 3 lefties coming up, so it's possible that Hairston and Cedeno will start some of those games. Neifi will probably get one start too just because Dusty will find it difficult to sit Neifi for 3 straight games.
  22. Hollandsworth can't be relied upon to keep putting up his recent numbers, which is exactly he only makes $900K after a decade in the majors.
  23. I'm at the point where I believe that if Dusty is resigned Hendry should only draft switch hitters or lefthanded hitters in the future. Dusty could stay in Chicago another 10 years and we still wouldn't develop any purely right-handed batting prospects. They should all be traded if Dusty is resigned.
