Really? Continuity is the biggest thing here, I think. Smith was on the Arkansas staff a year ago, so he's familiar with the current players and coaches. He'll probably keep a lot of the stuff intact and keep things familiar for everybody. I question his ability to coach long-term and Arkansas signing him to a long term deal would be a mistake, but I don't think it's a terrible one-year, interim move. It was probably the best, or nearly the best, of a bunch of bad options at this point. Correction: not probably. They will be going forward with the same staff. He is extremely well liked by the players, and is only 4 months removed from coaching there originally. He has worked with all of Arkansas's coaches but one. His job is to handle the administrative side of things and let all the assistants do their jobs. There is no illusion that he's a long-term solution, but he is perhaps the best possible bridge to the end of this season, when the hiring options will be exponentially better than they are right after spring ball is over.
