    I agree. PCA is the only untouchable player in the franchise, so have at it! I'd be all in on Flaherty for a 3-4 year deal. I'm not sure that Rooker can repeat this season as his BABIP is unsustainable I believe. Yes to Tucker. The big question is, where do these guys play if they don't trade rostered guys?

    Tom said that they like to operate below the first level. That's code for, that's our budget. The evidence is their past history with going over in consecutive seasons. The CBT may not be a governor, but they certainly would prefer to stay under it, as Tom has said.

    It's not an accident that Jed made sure that the fans knew that they were going over the cap. Nobody makes that announcement!! It was scripted so that the team could tell the fans, "see, we spend money." He's not fooling anybody.

    I don't disagree at all. I'm saying that it's not something that the Cubs make a practice of doing, and I don't think that they will.

    It's mostly Smyly's bonuses that will kick in after the season.

    History has show us that they are a very strict budget team. To pay 30% penalty next season just doesn't seem like a Cubs thing to do. They don't like to go over even one time, yet alone back to back seasons. Hell, maybe they go over by 50 million next season. But it just doesn't sound very Jed/Tom like. Tom is all business, and has told us that their budget is the first level of the threshold. So being all business, I don't think going over is part of their plan. Especially with a .500 caliber team. Now if they have a chance to win the WS, they may readdress the budget.

    The cost would be about 320,000. That's far from the issue though. The issue is, they are not going over next season now.

    Of course this is true. I'm not making excuses for the Cubs. I'm saying that the umps are bad for all 30 teams, for all 162 games. I'd prefer that the call is correct opposed to being wrong.

    Not to mention a chance for a higher draft pick.

    I think the main reason is that they are bad. Being consistently wrong is bad. They should not have their own strike zone. A hitter or pitcher should never be thinking that there's an extra couple of inches off the plate. Even if it's consistent. The calls need to be correct, and not consistent. Being correct all the time is the consistency we're looking for. Not giving the a bigger strike zone consistently.

    If it wasn't a grave sin, then why did he stay below it leaving just enough room for additions? They could have gone over much earlier, but chose to stay under. Smyly's bonus' are going to put them over. Maybe it's not a big deal, but either way, they are staying under in 2025 because of this. Paying Belli this kind of money is a huge mistake. Just another Jed blunder.

    Tom said that the first level of the CBT is the budget. He actually said something like, "we like to operate below the first level." That's code for, the first level is our budget. So Jed went over budget. Which isn't as bad as going over the threshold. Now they won't go over next season.

    This all sounds fair. Symly's bonus is going to put them over this year, and has nothing to do with next year. I don't recall implying that it did. Sorry if it sounded that way. I also want to add that I believe that Jed very much wanted to stay under, and is very upset that he's going to go over. Not upset as Tom is though. Even if it's by a tiny bit. He had one job. Stay under budget. He couldn't do that, and the team missed the playoffs. Not a prediction or anything, but that to me is a fireable offense. The key to staying under, was to have the room and ability to go over next season if it could make them a WS contender. The penalty is not an issue for Tom. It's the inability to not go over next year that's the issue.

    Ok, let's try this again. With the extra Smyly money being paid out, they should be around 85 million under with Cody in the mix. If he opts out, they will be about 112 million under. With 0-3 guys and arb guys, I estimate that to be in the 30 million range. So yes, if Cody opts out, they should have in the low 80's to spend. If he doesn't, they will be about 55 million under. I meant that if he doesn't opt out they will be around 60 million. But then I forgot about Smyly's bonus money.

    I'm looking at 90.6 million below the cap with Cody's contract in that number. I made a mistake by going by old memory! If he opts out, it's about 112 million under. Add back in all the arb guys and 0-3 guys and we're back down to the low 80's if he opts out. Now I'm confused!

    I think your right! I was going by memory. Right now, it show they are 90.6 million under the threshold. It will probably be closer to 85 million after the whole Smyly pay out. If Cody opts out, that would bring it to around 112 million. Add in, let's say 30 million in arb guys and 0-3 guys, and we're at 82 ish. Nice catch!

    I was thinking that if Cody doesn't opt out, they will have in the area of 60 million to spend. And that is including arb guys and 0-3 guy using my own estimates. Without trading current rostered players, there's really no room to add offense. That said, I would spend just about all of that money on a couple of SP. I don't see any way that Burnes is a realistic signing. I'd be all in on Flaherty for sure. And at least one of Bieber, Fried, and Buehler. If they can't realistically improve the offense with new players, I think that they should go all in with pitching.

    I agree. They very much need offense, but with making trades, there nowhere to play them without benching current every day starters. It's a tough spot.

    I can't find any kind of trade clause in his contract.

    Honestly, I feel the same way about the outcome of playing the last couple of weeks, or not playing much. I personally have seen the current players play for some time now. From a selfish standpoint, I'd just like to see some young guys play at the major league level.

    The beef I had last season was PCA and Canario didn't play. I'd like to see Caissie added to the 40, promoted, and not miss a game. I think they abandoned the first base experiment with him, but he can rotate every game in a corner OF spot and DH for the remainder of the season. There's really nothing negative about doing what you said about meeting players and getting the whole experience.

    I agree with all of this. I've just always felt like the Cubs wouldn't do something like that.

    How does Caissie have any path to every day playing time without benching a guy(s)? If he's not going to play every day, why not just let him keep hitting in AAA? Maybe after the 22nd, they give him a taste? But at who's expense?
