  1. This absolute narrow-analysis of Theriot is overblown. First, it seems that in order for somebody to be "good," they have to be an all-star. Second, some of you act like OPS is the end-all-be-all stat. I can handle a lower OPS if it's low because of a lack of power at a non-power position. Theriot was second amongst SSs in all of baseball in OBP last year. I'll take the low OPS and marginally adequate defense with that. This year, his average and his walks are down. So is nearly everyone else's on the team not named DLee or Kosuke. Before passing final judgement on him that he's a "bad" player, I'll look at the whole picture. His career, short as it is, has been kind of Farnsworthian to this point (up in 2006 in limited at bats, down in 07, up in 08, down in 09). They average out. He's a career .350+ OBP hitter, and there's no reason to expect he can't continue that for maybe a couple more years. Like many other decent role-playing starters, you take the good with the bad with him. When he's down, he's still better than Neifi ever was. When he's up, he's easily above average. He's no all star, this is a down year, but there are far bigger problems on this team, and he's still easily a usable player. He's not the Macias-level of suck like some of you are making him out to be. That said, I'd move him in a heartbeat in a deal that improves us, especially considering that he's the kind of guy whose perceived value is probably higher than his real value to the team right now.
  2. Reminds me of the OLD school Haray... "It's a long deep fly ball it's going back way back it could be it would be and it's.......caught by the second baseman..."
  3. I don't understand the infatuation with trying to associate Castro's chances of success with the career of Ronny Cedeno. There are some similarities. Cedeno also had some similarities with Hanley Ramirez, as well as thousands of other guys that no one has ever heard of. It doesn't mean much. What does mean much is Castro's quality peripherals at an advanced level for his age. That is always about the best predictor you can get for future success, regardless of what "type" of player a guy is.
  4. When it says he was replaced in the rotation by Figueroa, was that forecasted ahead of time, or was this a last minute substitution? I think if it's the former, then this was probably in his contract and planned. If it was the latter, he got homesick and decided he wanted to go home and not play baseball here in the states anymore.
  5. Lets see over the past 5 seasons he has pitched 128, 46, 25, 148, and is on pace for about 150 innings this season. There is no way in hell he would command an 8 year deal if he was healthy this season. This is the most healthy he has been in 5 years, and the worst season he has had over that time. I love the guy and would like to keep him, but other teams are not going to be throwing bags of cash at him in this economy this offseason. I meant injury free throughout his career. If he had been injury free throughout his career, we still wouldn't be having this conversation, because he wouldn't be a Cub. And Mark Prior would be starting Tuesday's game for us, followed by Wood. And Mike Harkey would be another two years from being HOF eligible.

  7. With his history, that's not a smart gamble for him to take. I think he'd jump all over a 3/30 deal all things considered.
  8. Frankly, I think we should move him. This team is just going to be a year older next year. I think it's time to blow it up, start rebuilding the farm, and try again in 3 years. I think Jim could get creative enough to move most of our expensive guys except Soriano...we'd have to take back a worse contract to dump him.
  9. Second best stuff in the league right now. The best stuff in the league, on any given night, apparently belongs to whoever is starting against us right now.
  10. I'm thinking the season is lost, and Harden has been considerably more like his old self than he was in the first half. Should we hold onto him, or put him on the waiver wire and see how far he drops before someone makes a claim? Someone in the race that needs pitching would undoubtedly jump all over him at this point, I think we could get a pretty good return on him...
  11. How does the old phrase go? It's better for you to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're an idiot than to open your mouth and prove them right. I kind of like the one that says "God gave us two ears and only one mouth for a reason."
  12. He's not learning English from scratch. English is mandatory in S Korean middle schools (3 or 4 years minimum?), so all S Korean players should have at least a very basic vocabulary (not expecting Koreans to be able to speak it well by any means....just differentiating between him and the average Venezuelan or Dominican that probably doesn't speak any at all...).
  13. what does that even mean? If you run that through google translater, it comes out "I have an irrational, misplaced hatred for Shark because Hendry paid him too much money, and they rushed him up before he was ready."
  14. Charlie Donovan and Lou Brown.
  15. The guy should get beat down just for the principle of committing a major beer foul.
  16. Maybe badly was overstating it, but he sucked for us. He allowed inherited runners to score more often than he held them, which makes his numbers from that period deceiving.
  17. We tried the Weathers experiment once and he sucked for us, badly.
  18. Nice face plant. :-)) Pujols is a good guy...but only a Cardinals fan could have pulled that move off...
  19. There's alot of guys we could have traded him straight up for that I would have rather had than Tejada.
  20. This is way overboard and extremely stupid. The guy's got talent, and he never really focused that much on baseball before. It's not his fault he was rushed up and the management has a hard on for him and won't send him down. Your hate is being applied on the wrong person.
  21. Let's get another guy on the 60 day DL so we have more postseason roster flexibility. #-o
  22. BJ in the dugout could really help pick up the morale of the team.
  23. Aaron Miles was on a rehab assignment. Numbers are not his primary focus for what he was trying to do down there. You gotta get your strength back. You have to get your timing back. What was his primary focus when he was on the big league roster earlier this year? LOL, ok I see what you mean. Who knows, maybe his time down in the minors helped his confidence and helped him work things out in a low pressure environment? I hope he comes up and hits .300 like he did last year. ....problem is that even if he miraculously 'hits .300', he's still only going to get on base at a rate of .330 and slug at a rate of .375 or so and none of that is acceptable....and THATS IF HE BATS .300! Not only is he useless, but he is a severe liability.....own up to the fact that signing him was a folly, DFA him, and be done with it. So where do we get backup middle infielders that can OPS .800 and provide adequate defense?
  24. I'm not looking forward to his first start. He hasn't really had a chance to work with Rothschild yet. I am curious to see how he does by the time September comes around and Larry's had some time to work with him.
  25. Something tells me Lou wasn't talking in English and his comments were misconstrued. He was talking in green font.
