  1. If we didn't have so many other injury Q's on the roster next year, maybe. Considering that the MGTs excuse for the bad year revolved around injury problems, I can't see them making a blockbuster move for a guy with Griffey's history.
  2. For those saying Hendry didn't move fast enough, it's not like Mazzone took his time testing out the open market. From the time ATL gave other orgs permission to talk to him, it was only what, 48 hours or so before he agreed to go with Baltimore? And talking with Steinbrenner gives him a value with which to negotiate before signing elsewhere. Some of you are WAAAY to quick to fault Hendry. He's not perfect, but he's far from this bumbling idiot some of you are making him out to be.
  3. I'll be happy if he keeps the walks down and gets ahead in the count more often than not. He hasn't pitched much over the last two years, so some rust should have been expected going into the AFL. I just want him to work on hitting his spots, making his pitches, and getting his confidence back up. I wouldn't read too much into the results. He's basically getting a warmup against a "who's who" of the minor leagues.
  4. I'm torn on how I feel about that. On one hand, I'd hate to see him go to the Yanks. On the other hand, I'd be glad to get him out of the NL where we wouldn't have to face his pitchers as much.
  5. Giles has always struck me as an exception to the rule, I think money is less important than other factors, such as location and winning (given that the money is decent, however). I don't think he'll sign for the highest offer unless the highest offer is also from the team that he feels is the best fit. He'll take a small discount to sign for the right team. The question is, exactly what size of discount, and how far off of "the right fit" are the Cubs? i think the cubs will have to offer a lot of money to get him. wrigley's not exactly a huge lefty upgrade to petco and it's definitely not close to an ocean, unless he likes windsurfing on lake michigan. i'd love to get him and think we will, but we aren't getting a discount. Exactly...I guess I could have said it in fewer words...with Giles, we're going to have to outbid other teams by a good margin to get him. Just barely having the highest offer won't cut it.
  6. I'd rather take Odalis over Lowe...I wonder if we shipped Corey to LA in the deal, if we could upgrade from Lowe to Perez? That makes it a little more fair for LA, IMO, and we make out better. LA will need a CFer after losing Bradley, and we'll have an excess, so it washes out. I wouldn't mind getting Bradley...if anything, it'll validate Baker as a "Player's Manager" during the last year of his contract. If anyone can keep Bradley straight, Baker is supposed to be the guy.
  7. I don't see how the supposition that they had a few career years and had some balls bounce their way makes anyone here a sore looser. I tend to stop posting and go into lurking mode when the board takes a turn for the worse when the defeatist pessimists flood the board. I hate those types of attitudes as much as anyone else, but from waht I've seen in this thread, I wouldn't call anyone a sore looser. KWilliams ineptness and futility has been well documented over the years, I'd say he's had worse years than Jim Frey when he was GM. Asking whether or not the team he put together is a fluke or not is a legitimate question. It's a quality team, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that KWill is a genius. He's had FAR more moves backfire on him than he's had pay off. This year, he had a bunch of moves that paid off at the same time. Rating the season from a GM perspective, I would call it a fluke. Rating the performance of the individuals or Ozzie himself, I wouldn't call what they did with the people they ended up with at the end of ST this year a fluke.
  8. Patterson for Hanley Ramirez. pfft! No chance. Patterson for Manny, straight up. :D You put the smiley on there, but it could happen. Boston tried to give Manny away last year...they put him on unrevocable waivers to any team that picked up his entire salary. We could get Manny for CPat if we picked up enough, if not all, of Manny's salary.
  10. A better question would be: If the Sox win it all, will the Trib fear that the fan base will take a hit, and subsequently, attendance and marketing revenue? Would they give Hendry more money to spend in the offseason to put together a better team and have a better chance of being better than the Sox in '06, and gaining that edge back for '07? I think if the Sox win it all, the Trib makes less money in '06. Hopefully, they'll think long term, invest more in the team to gain that market share back in '07.
  11. Just because he's picking up his option, doesn't mean he intends to keep him. If he can trade and get a far-better offensive 2bman, he could then trade Belliard (like we're proposing with Walker, if Hendry picked up the option). The difference is Belliard didn't sign at a discount and play as a backup for a year when he could have started like Walker, so there's no underhandedness for Shapiro to pick up the option then trade him.
  12. What would everyone think about trading to get Clement back? I'd like him back. He wasn't the same after taking that shot to the head, but I think an offseason and being reunited with Rothschild could get him back to his old form. I think he's a prime candidate to have a career year next season.
  13. It's pretty disappointing we didn't have anyone from High-A picked...we had alot of talent in the low As that could have really boosted their system if they had another good year (i.e. Dopirak)
  14. The Cubs have some guys they're going to risk loosing in the rule 5 draft if they don't make any room on their 40 man roster...especially if they make a run at a couple of FAs like Furcal, Giles, Howry, Saenz, etc...I'm guessing they're trying to showcase him so they can use him as a trading chip. I hope he keeps his AFL streak up and raises his value. If he does well in the AFL, I'd be willing to be he probably gets traded this offseason.
  15. We don't know if Nomar figures into Hendry's offseason plans. He'll be a class A FA, so if he signs elsewhere, we could be entitled to a 1st round draft pick and a sandwich pick (or a 2nd round and a sandwhich if he signs in the bottom half of the league). If we don't offer him arb, we get nothing. However, if we do offer him arb, he may accept, and his salary he'd get from arbitration would be guaranteed (i.e. no incentive based deals come out of arbitration). It's a risky move. Unless he's willing/capable of moving to the OF, that could derail the possibility of going after Furcal, making it harder to get that leadoff hitter, as we'd be limited to going after OFrs that could leadoff, instead of middle infielders or outfielders. If I'm Hendry, I don't know if I'd offer him arbitration or not, that's a tough call. Whichever way he goes, though, I hope he does it quickly so he can get a better picture of who he needs to pursue before the FA signing season picks up.
  16. Thats a good point, I'd have to think Seanez would be a type A, making it 4. Does resigning your own players in the exclusive period count to that total...i.e. resigning nomar and not picking up furcal? Nope. I'm pretty sure re-signing your own players doesn't count against your total. But if Nomar were to re-sign before declaring, it definitely wouldn't count. Ok, then everything rotoauthority said except Nomar instead of Furcal, I like it. I think you could still do Furcal instead of Nomar and be under the limit. If I understand it right, you can sign 3 Class A FAs if you lose 0. If you lose one, you can sign 4. If you lose 2, you can sign 5, etc... Am I mistaken?
  17. Hendry is very conscientious about his reputation for how he deals with his players. Walker signed with us below market value because he wanted to play in Chicago, Clevland had offered him more the last two years than we did. If he picks up Walker's option then trades him, he would be sure that no other vets that really want to play for Chicago would sign with us at a discount. If I'm Hendry, it would have to be a trade that just knocked my socks off in order to pick up the option and trade him. In 99% of the scenarios out there, I don't pick up Walker's option unless I intend to keep him on the roster. But then again, loyalty means something to me, when some people only care about the bottom line, so that's just my opinion.
  18. Back to the original post, even when he resigned/got fired, I think most KC fans like Tony Pena (although with that lineup, it's hard to expect much out of any manager).
  19. It would be helpful to others on the board if you could explain your perspective. Do you have numbers, anecdotes, or something else to support your dislike of Scoscia? I don't think anyone in their right mind would hand Rob Quinlann a job over Dallas McPherson. I don't think many managers would still have Darren Erstad playing over Casey Kotchman. I think being in a terrible division with a huge payroll makes him look a lot better than he is. I like Scioscia, but having Erstad play 1B does puzzle me too. I can't ever think of someone earning a gold glove at a premium defensive position (MIF, CF) getting moved to a corner while still in their prime playing years. Erstad made a great CF, but is far below average offensively for a 1B. They would have been better off using his value as a CF and trading him if they didn't want him in CF anymore. That has to be one of the oddest moves I can remember in the last 10 years.
  20. I've read in a few places that Cleveland will be interested in TWalk this offseason. They have a ton of youth and talent in their organization, from what I understand...but I'm not familiar with their system. Who do they have that we could entice from them, or who do they have that we could incorporate into a 3 way for someone else?
  21. Two things that would intrigue me about Epstein...he was hired when he was 28, didn't have much experience working in the executive world of baseball, and I'm sure that was something he had to overcome. Wherever he would end up next, I'm sure he'd be a better GM than he was at Boston simply for having had a couple of years under his belt now. The second thing that would intrigue me about the Cubs going after him is you know he would change the philosophy throughout the organization to one based on Sabermetrics. My question would be....how far back would a sudden change in philosophy set the organization, and how long would it take to get it fully ingrained throughout the whole organization?
  22. Encarnacion could still have a breakout year...I could see Hendry taking a flier on him, I would rank him the most likely of the listed OFrs to be signed to fill our RF vacancy. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Preston Wilson brought in to play Center. I don't think Corey's coming back next year.
  23. I'm I the only one who thinks this Sun Sentinal writer just didn't notice that the staff was all signed to a one year deal. It seemed to me like that guarenteed Dusty his job this year, too. I would put the odds of the Tribune bringing back Dusty's staff, and then firing Dusty at 10,000:1 I think the implication is that Girardi may be waiting for next offseason for Dusty to be let go (i.e. when his contract expires, along with all of his coaches contracts as well), not that Girardi is waiting for something to happen any sooner than that.
  24. There's plenty of doubt. He's as much a Yankee as he is a Cub. The guy currently is a Yankee, that right there should instill some doubt. It doesn't sound like many of the managers like working under Steinbrenner...plus, would old George ever go for a rookie manager? That's not his MO. I like the idea of a former catcher as a manager. Soscia was a catcher, so was Yost, Pena, and a few others who I would deem to be good managers.
  25. Cleveland has made it be known that they're still interested in Walker. They've been trying to sign him for the last couple of years, and they probably have the most to offer back as well. That's the team I would zero in on as a potential third partner in a deal with Atlanta.
